Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vedic Metre: In Its Historical Development My first task in this work is accordingly to delimit the 'popular Rigveda, ' which has generally been vaguely described as consisting of certain hymns appended to the first nine Mandalas, and the majority of those of Mandala x. For this purpose an examination of the language has proved the most effective method: but the evidence is greatly strengthened by the fact that the differences found in the language are throughout accompanied by differences of metre. These differences are sometimes broadly marked, sometimes subtle: but they can alway be clearly recognized when expressed by numerical calculations. Book Synopsis Vedic and Sanskrit Historical Linguistics by : Jared Klein
Download or read book Vedic and Sanskrit Historical Linguistics written by Jared Klein and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains 10 articles based on papers presented at the Linguistics sessions of the 13th World Sanskrit Conference (Edinburgh, July 2006) and shows the engagement of scholars with all aspects of Vedic Grammar, including phonology, inflectional and derivational morphology, syntax, semantics, lexicography, and stylistics. In many cases the articles constitute integral parts of long-term research projects of their authors that are ongoing even at this date of publication and therefore present the broad sweep of the field of Vedic linguistics as it is currently being practiced. The contributions include two on phonology (Kobayashi and Kummel), two on morphology (Garcia Ramon and Tucker), three on syntax (Bubenik, Hettrich, and Hock), one on the semantics of tense and aspect (Dahl), one on lexicography (Krisch), and one on stylistics (Klein). In several instances these papers fit integrally into the research agendas of their authors, representing parts of larger projects reflected in recent publications (Bubenik, Dahl, Garcia Ramon, Hettrich, Klein, Kobayashi) or deal with issues touched on repeatedly by their authors over a number of years (Hock). In one case (Krisch), the work announced has in the interim begun to appear and represent a broad reflection of research projects currently underway in Sanskrit Linguistics. That all but one of the papers focus exclusively on Vedic is simply a reflection of the reality that in Western countries the study of Sanskrit has frequently been treated as an entree to Indo-European linguistics, and it is especially the oldest texts that have been mined for whatever nuggets they can yield relative to our understanding of the proto-language. Book Synopsis Sievers' Law and the History of Semivowel Syllabicity in Indo-European and Ancient Greek by : P. J. Barber
Download or read book Sievers' Law and the History of Semivowel Syllabicity in Indo-European and Ancient Greek written by P. J. Barber and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an investigation of how semivowels were realised in Indo-European and in early Greek. More specifically, it examines the extent to which Indo-European *i and *y were independent phonemes, in what respects their alternation was predictable, and how this situation changed as Indo-European developed into Greek. The comprehensive nature of this study, its chronological sensitivity, and careful assessment of what is inherited and what is innovative, enables substantive conclusions to be drawn regarding the behaviour of semivowels at various stages in the history of Greek and in Indo-European itself.
Book Synopsis Embodying the Vedas by : Borayin Larios
Download or read book Embodying the Vedas written by Borayin Larios and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-04-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popularly Hinduism is believed to be the world’s oldest living religion. This claim is based on a continuous reverence to the oldest strata of religious authority within the Hindu traditions, the Vedic corpus, which began to be composed more than three thousand years ago, around 1750–1200 BCE. The Vedas have been considered by many as the philosophical cornerstone of the Brahmanical traditions (āstika); even previous to the colonial construction of the concept of “Hinduism.” However, what can be pieced together from the Vedic texts is very different from contemporary Hindu religious practices, beliefs, social norms and political realities. This book presents the results of a study of the traditional education and training of Brahmins through the traditional system of education called gurukula as observed in 25 contemporary Vedic schools across the state of Maharasthra. This system of education aims to teach Brahmin males how to properly recite, memorize and ultimately embody the Veda. This book combines insights from ethnographic and textual analysis to unravel how the recitation of the Vedic texts and the Vedic traditions, as well as the identity of the traditional Brahmin in general, are transmitted from one generation to the next in contemporary India.
Book Synopsis Prolegomena on Metre and Textual History of the R̥gveda by : Hermann Oldenberg

This book was released on 2005 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oldenberg made a distinction between the original text of the Rgveda the form in which the rsis composed and recited their hymns and the `traditional text` which in a fixed form, has been handed down to us by the oral tradition. Oldenberg made a thorough critical study of all aspects of the traditional text in order to present to the world of scholars the original text in the form and arrangement discovered by him. The materials that are now being published in this volume were intended by Oldenberg to serve as a Preface to his proposed edition of the Rgveda.

Book Synopsis Rigvedic Formulas and Meter by : Urban Lindqvist
Download or read book Rigvedic Formulas and Meter written by Urban Lindqvist and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book starts with a rundown on Rigvedic meter including a discussion of irregularities and the importance of word-boundary patterns, with a brief digression on clitics. This is followed by a discussion of formulas, formulaic diction and various definitions of the concept of formula in oral-poetic traditions, resulting in the relativistic but more realistic definition ”a formula is a slice of a formulaic continuum”, i.e. a razor-sharp definition is in conflict with the material it is supposed to define. The metrical facts show that irregular dimeters in the Rigveda are more closely related to regular trimeters than to regular dimeters. Still, Bloomfield’s extraction hypothesis does not provide a sufficient methodological basis for explaining the irregular dimeters, nor does the laryngealist approch. A selection of irregular dimeter lines are examined with reference to the formulaic continua and associative networks surrounding them, and an attempt is made to show how these continua helped trigger the use of certain words in certain metrical positions.
Book Synopsis Framing the Mahabharata by : Saikat K Bose
Download or read book Framing the Mahabharata written by Saikat K Bose and published by Vij Books India Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It all probably was a tale. However, serious research does identify some events, from about a thousand years before the Common Era, that qualify as the bases of the epic’s plot. Apparently, collective memory evolved significantly through the centuries before their stories, legends, and allegories took the forms that we know from the epic today. And yet, even if no set of historical events can be found to correspond with epic episodes, its many stories, legends, and allegories nevertheless conform to themes that were at one time authentic. In other words, whether or not epic episodes were historical, the ideas and concepts they represent were.It is with these ideas and concepts that Framing the Mahabharata weaves the pattern of South Asian society as it evolved through the cusp of the Bronze and Iron Ages, developing motifs we are familiar with today. Against this pattern, it reconstructs the military tactics, technology, and sociology that marked the interplay of nomadic and sedentary folks, most poignantly depicted in the career of war-chariots.
