Book excerpt: Gaudapada, having touched the highest peaks of realization, saw that the ultimate Reality can neither be born nor die, and with the support of the Principle-Naryana was able to reveal for the first time to human beings the Teaching already present in the Sruti: Ajativada, the doctrine of "non-generation", and the Asparsayoga, the yoga of "no-support "or "no-relation". In order to enounce the Ajativada and the Asparsayoga Gaudapda chose to comment the Mandukya Upanisad. This Upanisad deals with the three states of Being (Virat, Hiranyagarbha, Isvara) and the Fourth state (Turiya) which represents the absolute Reality. Because of its doctrine and philosophy, it is the most meaningful and profound Upanisad of the Advaita Vedanta and represents by itself the very foundation of metaphysical realization. The Mukti Upanisad says: "If the goal is the attainment of the supreme Truth, the Mandukya Upanisad is altogether sufficient".Gaudapda divided his commentary (karika) into four chapters. He states that there is an unchangeable Reality, eternal, in act, with no generation and extinction, free of cause-effect and time-space, devoid of contradiction, One-without-a-second. And, as Reality is constant and perfect Unity, all differentiation, multiplicity, impermanence and change cannot be the supreme Reality but only appearance, representation, which acquires reality only when viewed from the standpoint of "opinion"."The supreme truth is this: there is neither birth nor dissolution, nor aspirant to liberation nor liberated nor anyone in bondage". (Mandukyakarika, II, 32).RAPHAEL is an author and a teacher in the western Metaphysical Tradition as well as in the Vedanta. He has written several books on the pathway of non-duality (Advaita). He has also translated and commented a number of key vedantic texts from the original sanskrit. His entire work represents a conscious reunification of Western and Eastern Traditions in the One Tradition of Metaphysics. After more than 60 years of teaching, both oral and written, Raphael has withdrawn into mahasamadhi.Truth

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Panini's Ashtadhyayi represents the first attempt in the history of the world to describe and analyse the components of a language on scientific lines. It has not only been universally acclaimed as the first and foremost specimen of Descriptive Grammar but has also been the chief source of inspiration for the linguist engaged in describing languages of different regions. To understand Sanskrit language, and especially that part of it which embodies the highest aspirations of ancient Aryan people, viz., the Brahmanas, Samhitas, Upanisads, it is absolutely necessary to have a complete knowledge of the grammar elaborated by Panini. Being a masterpiece of reasoning and artistic arrangement its study is bound to cultivate intellectual powers. Western scholars have described it as a wonderful specimen or a notable manifestation of Indian intelligence. This book is an English translation of Ashtadhyayi in two volumes and has won a unique position in the world of scholarship.

Book excerpt: This volume of the monumental reference series being prepared under the general editorship of Karl Potter provides summaries of the main works in the Grammarian tradition of Indian philosophy. Describing the functions of language on different levels, from ordinary empirical speech to the poetic intuition of the divine, the Grammarians sought to demonstrate that the correct grammatical use of language and the devotional chanting of mantras are ways of moving from lower to higher stages of knowledge and self-realization. This work gives special emphasis to the thought of Bhartrhari, the great systematizer of the Grammarian philosophy. For those unacquainted with Indian philosophy, the editors' introduction provides an explanation of the basic concepts found in the Grammarian texts. Grammarian thought is based on the Vedas, and the writings of Panini, Patanjali, Bhartrhari, and others develop implicit Vedic ideas about language and its function. Their works combine a grammatical analysis of Sanskrit language with a philosophy that takes language as divine. Originally published in 1991. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.
