Book excerpt: The Olympic Games are widely perceived as one of the most significant media events in the world. Whilst the Winter Olympics are generally less influential than the Summer Olympics, they still attract considerable global media attention. Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games not only achieved good ratings on television viewing but also created new ground in digital media participation. Conducting a two-wave study, this research examined the factors that would predict the multi-screen viewing and second screen viewing preferences of Chinese audiences during Beijing 2022 and explored how multi-screen and second screen use might facilitate new ways of viewing the Olympic Games and fan interaction for the Chinese audience. The result indicates that both audience factors and media factors are predictors of audiences' media consumption for sports mega events. The finding also suggests that mobile devices and digital media platforms did not displace more traditional modes of viewing the Olympics ; rather, these newer forms played a complementary role, part of a now broad array of ways to experience the event.

Book excerpt: This research uses corpus as a research tool and critical discourse analysis as the primary theoretical basis to explore the domestic and NOW corpus of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. The authors found that: China Daily has taken advantage of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics to shape the international image of China as a reliable, trustworthy, friendly, environmentally friendly, and clean power, which reflects the reality of China more comprehensively and objectively. Foreign news reports on the Beijing Winter Olympics are primarily positive, but there are still nearly one-third of negative evaluations. China still has a long way to construct a foreign-oriented publicity system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A major contribution to the study of global events in times of global media. Owning the Olympics tests the possibilities and limits of the concept of 'media events' by analyzing the mega-event of the information age: the Beijing Olympics. . . . A good read from cover to cover." —Guobin Yang, Associate Professor, Asian/Middle Eastern Cultures & Sociology, Barnard College, Columbia University From the moment they were announced, the Beijing Games were a major media event and the focus of intense scrutiny and speculation. In contrast to earlier such events, however, the Beijing Games are also unfolding in a newly volatile global media environment that is no longer monopolized by broadcast media. The dramatic expansion of media outlets and the growth of mobile communications technology have changed the nature of media events, making it significantly more difficult to regulate them or control their meaning. This volatility is reflected in the multiple, well-publicized controversies characterizing the run-up to Beijing 2008. According to many Western commentators, the People's Republic of China seized the Olympics as an opportunity to reinvent itself as the "New China"---a global leader in economics, technology, and environmental issues, with an improving human-rights record. But China's maneuverings have also been hotly contested by diverse global voices, including prominent human-rights advocates, all seeking to displace the official story of the Games. Bringing together a distinguished group of scholars from Chinese studies, human rights, media studies, law, and other fields, Owning the Olympics reveals how multiple entities---including the Chinese Communist Party itself---seek to influence and control the narratives through which the Beijing Games will be understood. digitalculturebooks is an imprint of the University of Michigan Press and the Scholarly Publishing Office of the University of Michigan Library dedicated to publishing innovative and accessible work exploring new media and their impact on society, culture, and scholarly communication. Book excerpt: In the post-COVID-19 era, the mediatization of sports mega-events is timely and notable. This study focuses on the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing and investigates how mediated processes influenced the Olympics. The data were gathered in two ways: the authors examined 783 WeChat posts from three salient Chinese media institutions, namely, the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Organising Committee (BOCOG), China Central Television (CCTV), and Beijing Television (BTV), as well as conducted 21 semi-structured interviews with BOCOG staff and members of the general public. The authors discovered that the Games were narrated around two major themes--the development of technology and "going green"--both of which were heavily influenced by the country's national agenda. As a result, the Chinese public was thoroughly immersed in the tech-savvy Olympics scenario, and the Green Olympics concept was widely shared in their daily practices. This study adds to the literature by incorporating communicative figuration as an analytical framework to improve the quantitative and qualitative dimensions of media saturation theory. Additionally, this research sheds light on the study of sports mediatization in China in the context of a pandemic.

Book excerpt: China successfully hosted the 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games, which left many tangible and intangible Winter Olympic heritage for China. Under the background of 300 million people participating in ice and snow, how to play the role of Winter Olympic heritage and promote the development of ice and snow industry is an important issue to be solved. This study analyzes the basic characteristics of the heritage of the 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games and the Paralympic Winter Games from the five perspectives of positivity, sustainability, inheritance, diversity and localization, and the unique green Olympics, mass Olympics and driving Olympics of the heritage of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games. With the rapid development of China's ice and snow industry and the high participation rate of people in ice and snow sports, China has a good industrial development prospect. From the perspective of Winter Olympic heritage, China's ice and snow industry has relatively perfect policy support for the development of ice and snow industry and can inherit the tangible and intangible heritage of the Olympic Games to give full play to the maximum effect of the ice and snow industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the headlines of the world's most beloved sporting events Brazil hosted the 2016 men's World Cup at a cost of $15 billion to $20 billion, building large, new stadiums in cities that have little use for them anymore. The projected cost of Tokyo's 2020 Summer Olympic Games is estimated to be as high as $30 billion, much of it coming from the public trough. In the updated and expanded edition of his bestselling book, Circus Maximus: The Economic Gamble Behind Hosting the Olympics and the World Cup, Andrew Zimbalist tackles the claim that cities chosen to host these high-profile sporting events experience an economic windfall. In this new edition he looks at upcoming summer and winter Olympic games, discusses the recent Women's World Cup, and the upcoming men's tournament in Qatar. Circus Maximus focuses on major cities, like London, Rio, and Barcelona, that have previously hosted these sporting events, to provide context for future host cities that will bear the weight of exploding expenses, corruption, and protests. Zimbalist offers a sobering and candid look at the Olympics and the World Cup from outside the echo chamber.

Book excerpt: "This is a fascinating book. It will educate you. Schwartzel has done some extraordinary reporting." — The New York Times Book Review “In this highly entertaining but deeply disturbing book, Erich Schwartzel demonstrates the extent of our cultural thrall to China. His depiction of the craven characters, American and Chinese, who have enabled this situation represents a significant feat of investigative journalism. His narrative is about not merely the movie business, but the new world order.” —Andrew Solomon, author of Far from the Tree and The Noonday Demon An eye-opening and deeply reported narrative that details the surprising role of the movie business in the high-stakes contest between the U.S. and China From trade to technology to military might, competition between the United States and China dominates the foreign policy landscape. But this battle for global influence is also playing out in a strange and unexpected arena: the movies. The film industry, Wall Street Journal reporter Erich Schwartzel explains, is the latest battleground in the tense and complex rivalry between these two world powers. In recent decades, as China has grown into a giant of the international economy, it has become a crucial source of revenue for the American film industry. Hollywood studios are now bending over backward to make movies that will appeal to China’s citizens—and gain approval from severe Communist Party censors. At the same time, and with America’s unwitting help, China has built its own film industry into an essential arm of its plan to export its national agenda to the rest of the world. The competition between these two movie businesses is a Cold War for this century, a clash that determines whether democratic or authoritarian values will be broadcast most powerfully around the world. Red Carpet is packed with memorable characters who have—knowingly or otherwise—played key roles in this tangled industry web: not only A-list stars like Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie, and Richard Gere but also eccentric Chinese billionaires, zany expatriate filmmakers, and starlets who disappear from public life without explanation or trace. Schwartzel combines original reporting, political history, and show-biz intrigue in an exhilarating tour of global entertainment, from propaganda film sets in Beijing to the boardrooms of Hollywood studios to the living rooms in Kenya where families decide whether to watch an American or Chinese movie. Alarming, occasionally absurd, and wildly entertaining, Red Carpet will not only alter the way we watch movies but also offer essential new perspective on the power struggle of this century.
