Book Synopsis Episodes from a Hudson River Town by : Clesson S. Bush
Download or read book Episodes from a Hudson River Town written by Clesson S. Bush and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2012 Award for Excellence presented by the Greater Hudson Heritage Network The seemingly unremarkable Hudson River town of New Baltimore has had its ups and downs, you could certainly say that. Here, generations of families have worked the fields until the yield tapped out, built and repaired ships and barges until the steam age died, and harvested ice until refrigeration made "icebox" a quaint colloquialism. Yet despite the various economic, social, and military forces that have transformed the town, New Baltimore and its residents have endured, celebrating their triumphs and enduring their tragedies. Drawing on original town board minutes, Greene County surrogate and land records, federal and state military records, land patents, colonial documents, conversations with local residents, censuses, and period newspapers, town historian Clesson S. Bush provides an authentic portrait of a small-town community, making the routine—and drama—of small-town life on the Hudson River come alive.

Book Synopsis Around Worthington by : Robert W. McCormick
Download or read book Around Worthington written by Robert W. McCormick and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1800s, New England pioneers braved the Ohio wilderness and settled on a tract of frontier land in central Ohio; this settlement was to become Worthington. During the nineteenth century, Worthington was mainly a sleepy market village, providing necessities for the surrounding farms. In the early twentieth century, Worthington evolved from its quiet, small-town days to asuburb of the growing metropolis of Columbus. The area experienced dramatic growth after World War II created the present suburban city. Tracing WorthingtonAa's dynamic history through time is especially significant now because the town is on the verge of celebrating its bicentennial (2003), which notably corresponds with OhioAa's 200th anniversary of official statehood. A compilation of nearly 200 photographs gathered from such varied sources as the Worthington Historical Society, the National Archives, local businesses, and private citizens helps enrich and vary this collection. These photographs and insightful text offer a visual history that captures the true breadth of WorthingtonAa's past.

Book Synopsis Salmon P. Chase by : Frederick J. Blue
Download or read book Salmon P. Chase written by Frederick J. Blue and published by Kent State University Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Chase wanted so much to make a name for himself in American politics that early in his career he considered changing his 'fishy' appellation to the more important sounding Spencer Paynce Cheyce. That alteration never came about, but even without a fancy name, the New England-born, Ohio-bred attorney devoted his life to public service at many levels of government. Chase served as Free-Soil Senator from Ohio, as Governor of that pivotal Midwestern state, as Secretary of the Treasury under Lincoln, and as Chief Justice of the United States, although he never realized his primary ambition--the presidency. Complex, overly ambitious, and deeply religious, Chase perhaps undermined his presidential hopes partly by his strong antislavery stance, but primarily by his failure to organize systematically his drive for national office. Chase worked hard for the rights of fugitive slaves and became prominent in the antislavery movement and in the establishment of the Liberty and Free-Soil parties, but he was often accused of being concerned only with his personal advancement. Frederick Blue has done extensive research among Chase's voluminous and often hard-to-read correspondence, and has incorporated pertinent collateral primary and secondary sources as well, to produce the first modern biography of this key Civil War era personality."--book jacket.
