Book excerpt: This is the second of a five-volume exposition of the main principles of nonlinear functional analysis and its applications to the natural sciences, economics, and numerical analysis. The presentation is self -contained and accessible to the nonspecialist. Part II concerns the theory of monotone operators. It is divided into two subvolumes, II/A and II/B, which form a unit. The present Part II/A is devoted to linear monotone operators. It serves as an elementary introduction to the modern functional analytic treatment of variational problems, integral equations, and partial differential equations of elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic type. This book also represents an introduction to numerical functional analysis with applications to the Ritz method along with the method of finite elements, the Galerkin methods, and the difference method. Many exercises complement the text. The theory of monotone operators is closely related to Hilbert's rigorous justification of the Dirichlet principle, and to the 19th and 20th problems of Hilbert which he formulated in his famous Paris lecture in 1900, and which strongly influenced the development of analysis in the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops a variational method for solving linear equations with $B$-symmetric and $B$-positive operators and generalizes the method to nonlinear equations with nonpotential operators. The author carries out a constructive extension of the variational method to ``nonvariational'' equations (including parabolic equations) in classes of functionals which differ from the Euler-Lagrange functionals. In this connection, some new functions spaces are considered. Intended for mathematicians working in the areas of functional analysis and differential equations, this book would also prove useful for researchers in other areas and students in advanced courses who use variational methods in solving linear and nonlinear boundary value problems in continuum mechanics and theoretical physics.

Book excerpt: Interest in regularization methods for ill-posed nonlinear operator equations and variational inequalities of monotone type in Hilbert and Banach spaces has grown rapidly over recent years. Results in the field over the last three decades, previously only available in journal articles, are comprehensively explored with particular attention given to applications of regularization methods as well as to practical methods used in computational analysis.

Book excerpt: Dynamical Systems Method for Solving Nonlinear Operator Equations is of interest to graduate students in functional analysis, numerical analysis, and ill-posed and inverse problems especially. The book presents a general method for solving operator equations, especially nonlinear and ill-posed. It requires a fairly modest background and is essentially self-contained. All the results are proved in the book, and some of the background material is also included. The results presented are mostly obtained by the author. Contains a systematic development of a novel general method, the dynamical systems method, DSM for solving operator equations, especially nonlinear and ill-posed Self-contained, suitable for wide audience Can be used for various courses for graduate students and partly for undergraduates (especially for RUE classes)

Book excerpt: This work is based upon a Special Session on the Theory and Applications of Nonlinear Operators of Accretive and Monotone Type held during the recent meeting of the American Mathematical Society in San Francisco. It examines current developments in non-linear analysis, emphasizing accretive and monotone operator theory. The book presents a major survey/research article on partial functional differential equations with delay and an important survey/research article on approximation solvability.

Book excerpt: The objectives of this monograph are to present some topics from the theory of monotone operators and nonlinear semigroup theory which are directly applicable to the existence and uniqueness theory of initial-boundary-value problems for partial differential equations and to construct such operators as realizations of those problems in appropriate function spaces. A highlight of this presentation is the large number and variety of examples introduced to illustrate the connection between the theory of nonlinear operators and partial differential equations. These include primarily semilinear or quasilinear equations of elliptic or of parabolic type, degenerate cases with change of type, related systems and variational inequalities, and spatial boundary conditions of the usual Dirichlet, Neumann, Robin or dynamic type. The discussions of evolution equations include the usual initial-value problems as well as periodic or more general nonlocal constraints, history-value problems, those which may change type due to a possibly vanishing coefficient of the time derivative, and other implicit evolution equations or systems including hysteresis models. The scalar conservation law and semilinear wave equations are briefly mentioned, and hyperbolic systems arising from vibrations of elastic-plastic rods are developed. The origins of a representative sample of such problems are given in the appendix.

Book excerpt: The impulse which led to the writing of the present book has emerged from my many years of lecturing in special courses for selected students at the College of Civil Engineering of the Tech nical University in Prague, from experience gained as supervisor and consultant to graduate students-engineers in the field of applied mathematics, and - last but not least - from frequent consultations with technicians as well as with physicists who have asked for advice in overcoming difficulties encountered in solving theoretical problems. Even though a varied combination of problems of the most diverse nature was often in question, the problems discussed in this book stood forth as the most essential to this category of specialists. The many discussions I have had gave rise to considerations on writing a book which should fill the rather unfortunate gap in our literature. The book is designed, in the first place, for specialists in the fields of theoretical engineering and science. However, it was my aim that the book should be of interest to mathematicians as well. I have been well aware what an ungrateful task it may be to write a book of the present type, and what problems such an effort can bring: Technicians and physicists on the one side, and mathematicians on the other, are often of diametrically opposing opinions as far as books con ceived for both these categories are concerned.

Book excerpt: The articles in this volume are an outgrowth of an international conference entitled Variational and Topological Methods in the Study of Nonlinear Phe- nomena, held in Pisa in January-February 2000. Under the framework of the research project Differential Equations and the Calculus of Variations, the conference was organized to celebrate the 60th birthday of Antonio Marino, one of the leaders of the research group and a significant contrib- utor to the mathematical activity in this area of nonlinear analysis. The volume highlights recent advances in the field of nonlinear functional analysis and its applications to nonlinear partial and ordinary differential equations, with particular emphasis on variational and topological meth- ods. A broad range of topics is covered, including: concentration phenomena in PDEs, variational methods with applications to PDEs and physics, pe- riodic solutions of ODEs, computational aspects in topological methods, and mathematical models in biology. Though well-differentiated, the topics covered are unified through a com- mon perspective and approach. Unique to the work are several chapters on computational aspects and applications to biology, not usually found with such basic studies on PDEs and ODEs. The volume is an excellent reference text for researchers and graduate students in the above mentioned fields. Contributors are M. Clapp, M.J. Esteban, P. Felmer, A. Ioffe, W. Marzan- towicz, M. Mrozek, M. Musso, R. Ortega, P. Pilarczyk, M. del Pino, E. Sere, E. Schwartzman, P. Sintzoff, R. Turner, and I\f. Willem.
