Book excerpt: Violence prevention efforts for youth are benefited by research that seeks further understanding of the factors influencing aggressive behavior. These factors include aggressive beliefs and violence exposure. This study was designed to explore the potential role of values in moderating the impact of violence exposure on aggressive beliefs among a sample of male high school age youth. It was hypothesized that the youth endorsement of prosocial values and subsequent rejection of individually-focused values like achievement, hedonism, and security will buffer the effect of community violence exposure on reported increases in aggressive beliefs. Findings from the study replicated Schwartz (2004) theory of values and showed support for the relationship of community violence exposure to aggressive beliefs. Only rejection of Achievement values demonstrated a buffering influence in the relationship of community violence and aggressive beliefs. Also included is a review of the limitation associated with sampling methods and response bias in considering the implications of this study and the promise of prosocial values as a protective factor.
