Book excerpt: Supply chain management helped companies to manage volumes, fulfil customer demand and optimize costs in production and distribution. Specifically, chemical industry companies with high complexity in production and distribution used supply chain management to steer their operations. Confronted with globalization and increasing raw material and sales price volatility, optimizing supply chain costs is no longer sufficient to ensure the overall profitability of the business. Value chain management takes supply chain management to the next level by integrating all volume and value decisions from sales to procurement. The book presents the value chain management concept and demonstrates how it is applied in a global value chain planning model for commodities in the chemical industry. A comprehensive industry case study illustrates the effects of decision making integration, e.g. the influence of raw material prices or exchange rates on optimal sales, production, distribution and procurement plans as well as overall company profitability.

This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The right supply chain strategy has been seen as an essential element of successful supply chain management. Considering the importance of supply chain strategy several attempts have been done to develop a supply chain strategy framework capable to identify the right supply chain strategy for companies. One of the most famous supply chain strategy frameworks is developed by Lee, and proposes an approach to derive the right supply chain strategy based on demand and supply uncertainty. Due to the complexity of supply chain management, a successful implementation of the right supply chain strategy requires alignment of supply chain processes. Although some attempts have been done to find the linkages between supply chain strategies and supply chain processes, a structured approach has not been developed yet. Thus, the following study aims to link supply chain strategies with supply chain processes by identifying process requirements for the four general strategies developed by Lee. Due to scarcity of literature in the field, the process characteristics were developed based on expert knowledge in cooperation with BearingPoint management consulting. Since different industries might have different supply chain requirements the study was focused on developing supply chain process characteristics suitable for companies in the chemical industry. To empirically validate the developed concept, a face-to-face interview was conducted with a company in the chemical industry. The interview outcome showed general alignment between the identified supply chain strategy and developed by BearingPoint experts process characteristics. Although further validation of the concept is required, the initial empirical findings supported the developed concepts. The research aims to provide practical implication by suggesting that supply chain processes have different requirements depending on supply chain strategies. In addition, the study provides an indication of process characteristics depending on the strategic position of a supply chain which might be useful for the initial assessment of alignment between supply chain strategy and supply chain processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The company sponsoring our project is a leading chemical manufacturer, supplying a wide range of products on a global scale. One of the most interesting lines of business the company operates is to supply specialty chemicals in faraway places on few weeks' notice. The nature of these supply chains is project- driven, or, in other words, unique, non-repeatable and established for the sole purpose of fulfilling a single project. The company faces the challenge of operationalizing the set-up of such supply chains in order to reduce the amount of time and effort devoted to each supply and maximize learning from each project. This thesis seeks to address the conundrum of setting up project-driven supply chains in a more efficient, effective and easily repeatable way. Through interviews with company personnel, we identify eleven challenges and subdivide them into three categories: Business-Specific, Cross-Border, and Last-Leg. Next, through literature review and interviews with experts, we identify seventeen possible solutions to the above issues, which have the potential to improve planning and execution of project-driven supply chains in the chemical industry. Recognizing that cross-learnings from supply chains in humanitarian and military supply chains are valuable, our interviews include military and humanitarian practitioners, with the aim of increasing the variety of solutions. Using the research data as a basis, we formulate a project-driven supply chain mobilization template aimed at including most critical areas required in setting up project-driven supply chains. This template could be used as both a guideline for planning the mobilization of a supply contract, and as a validation tool to confirm the mobilization process has been thoroughly completed. The adoption of the mobilization template and process via integration with managerial and approval processes is expected to drive a more efficient and effective mobilization of project-driven supply chains for companies within the chemical industry and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global value chains (GVCs) are fraught with the phenomenon of fragmentation and dispersion of production across the world. India presents a unique example with its high potential in manufacturing capability but low integration in GVCs. This book examines the reasons why India has failed to integrate within GVCs so far and looks at key examples to understand the impediments in this process. The chapters bring together case studies from across the manufacturing industry – labour-intensive (garment, paper and diamond), capital-intensive (automobile and petrochemical), and knowledge-intensive (semi-conductor microchip, chemical and pharmaceutical) sectors. Together, they present stories of successful integration of some firms in GVCs as well as the difficulties faced by them. The volume also highlights the importance of GVCs in the context of developing countries in terms of benefits such as income and value generation, knowledge and technology collaborations, and advances in systems and processes. This book will interest scholars and researchers in economics, international trade studies, development economics and business management as well as to practitioners, policymakers, government officials, and those in the corporate sector.

It is a leading-edge handbook that will emphasize areas of study where, thus far, little work has been done and where the "rubber meets the road" – the supply chain process, information, and systems integration. These are pertinent issues facing practitioners and researchers in today’s business environment. This is a gap-bridging handbook that analyzes interaction issues from both the research and practitioner sides. The result is a volume that examines and provides practical solutions on interaction issues while being firmly grounded in research principles.
