Book excerpt: Toward the objective of improving selection of undergraduate navigator trainees, a large scale study was conducted to evaluate various experimental tests for possible use in a complete revision of the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test (AFOQT's) Navigator-Technical composite. Forty-five noncognitive test scales and 17 experimental cognitive tests were administered to 507 students at the Officer Training School who subsequently entered undergraduate navigator training (UNT). Analyses of these data -- along with AFOQT data -- against training success indicated that, of the noncognitive materials, the only device with unique validity was the Personality Research Form; follow-up work with this is recommended. The experimental cognitive tests provided substantial improvements in prediction over that achieved with the present AFOQT. Content of a revised AFOQT Navigator-Technical composite is recommended.

Book excerpt: This research investigated the relationship between the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test (AFOQT) Form O and performance (pass/fail) in Undergraduate Pilot Training and Undergraduate Navigator Training. It was found that the several subtests and composites currently being used in the pilot and navigator selection had significant correlations with pilot and navigator training success, respectively. When the correlations were corrected for restriction in range, the correlations increased moderately. Regression analysis revealed that the AFOQT has greater accuracy in predicting success in UPT and UNT when two distinct composites are used than when one combined composite is used. The evaluation of the potential composites against the existing composites revealed that several alternative composites were more effective in predicting pilot and navigator training success than those currently in operational use. For more than 60 years, it has relied on the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test (AFOQT) as one measure of those qualifications. A variety of concerns have been raised about whether the AFOQT is biased, too expensive, or even valid for predicting officer success. The authors conducted a literature search to answer these concerns. They conclude that the AFOQT is a good selection test that predicts important Air Force outcomes and is not biased against minorities or women. The Air Force would not benefit by replacing the AFOQT with the SAT primarily because it would still have to administer subtests that measure specific aptitudes and knowledge needed for predicting pilot and combat systems officer success. However, other valid selection tools, such as personality tests, could be used to complement the AFOQT.
