Book excerpt: The study was a field validation of the effectiveness of an auxiliary high-mounted stoplamp in reducing rear-end collisions. A previous study (DOT-HS-803-467), using taxicabs, found a 54 percent reduction in relevant rear-end impacts to vehicles equipped with the auxiliary stoplamp. The present study used 5,400 telephone company passenger vehicles, half test, half control, which accumulated 55 million miles during a 12-month continuous data collection period. The results showed a statistically significant 53 percent reduction in relevant rear-end impact rate in the test group as compared to the control group. The findings were thus consistent with the previous study on taxicabs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans are "healing themselves" (Heckler, 1985) and prevention has taken root (McGinnis, 1985a). We are altering our lifestyle to reduce physical and mental health risks. Perhaps as important is the fact that the science of prevention is beginning to catch up with the practices of prevention, although some might argue that the popularity of these practices far outstrips sound theoretical and empirical foundations. The chapter authors in this volume examine the theoretical and empirical foundations of many current prevention practices and, where data exist, discuss the status of prevention efforts. Where substantial prevention is not yet on the horizon, the authors attempt to point us in the right direction or at least share with the reader some of the risk factors that should be addressed in our research. We hope that readers will be stimulated to discuss the issues raised, advance the current research, and, where possible, adopt the prevention and health promotion strategies that are supported by sound theoretical and empirical work. This volume can in no way be comprehensive with respect to the current work in prevention; however, we hope that we have provided a sampling of prevention activities and issues that appear together in one volume for perhaps the first time. The primary intent of this volume is modest, and the reader should not attempt to find continuity among the various chapters. The only binding among these contributions is their focus on prevention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on injuries is a high priority to inform public policy that reduces deaths, hospitalizations and associated costs. Principles for research design and analysis of injury incidence and severity are emphasized. Review of extant surveillance data reveals numerous flaws that must be changed to increase usefulness of the data. Research designs of studies of injury causation and evaluation of countermeasures are often inappropriate and mislead analytic and injury control efforts. Appendices to chapters illustrate research projects that influenced public policy affecting the reduction of motor vehicle fatalities per population by half in the U.S. The principles illustrated by these studies can be applied to other types of injury.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important textbook presents epidemiologic methods for studying injuries and evaluating interventions to prevent them. The formation of research questions and the choice of research methods may reveal or obscure patterns that can lead to remarkable reductions in injury. Injury control programs can be targeted and improved with the help of relatively simple descriptive studies, but some changeable factors are revealed only by more sophisticated analytic methods. The sources for reliable, valid data and exemplary study designs are described in this text. In addition, the difficulties in using rates and ratios and in applying epidemiologic methods when evaluating programs, laws, medical care, and regulations are discussed in detail. The use of economic concepts and policy analysis--topics not usually found in epidemiology texts--is also covered. Students and health care and safety professionals will find this a valuable guide in studying injury epidemiology and prevention.

Book excerpt: This book describes the demographic, sociological, and ecological background of the aging society, identifies human factors problems associated with aging, summarizes currently relevant information, and recommends directions for research. It suggests a program of research and technology development for the purpose of ameliorating the effects of functional changes that accompany the aging process and provides a basis for additional research and application of human factors engineering data to the design of environments in which aging people must function.
