Book excerpt: The increasing shift towards performance-based geotechnical earthquake engineering design requires an improved understanding of soil-structure interaction (SSI) for buildings on liquefiable deposits. While a number of authors have used centrifuge tests and numerical modelling to study this phenomena, a limited number of studies have been undertaken where numerical models have been validated against well-instrumented centrifuge tests. The focus of this research is to validate numerical simulations of ‘free-field’ conditions and numerical simulations of soil-structure interaction response of isolated buildings on liquefiable deposits against measurements from a centrifuge experiment. The 1D simulations for this study have been developed using the PM4Sand constitutive soil model as implemented in FLAC and the PDMY02 constitutive soil model as implemented in OpenSEES. The consideration of two soil models is one of the distinctive features of this study, as one of the objectives of this research is to compare the relative performance of the two constitutive soil models. The 2D numerical simulations to assess the soil-structure interaction response of isolated structures were developed using the PM4Sand constitutive soil model as implemented in FLAC. The 1D validation that was undertaken in this study show relatively good agreement between the simulated and measured accelerations and excess pore pressures using PM4Sand and PDMY02 for up to moderate levels of earthquake shaking. At high levels of earthquake shaking, good results were obtained using PM4Sand but a poor match with measured values was obtained using the PDMY02 model. The centrifuge experiment results appeared to show that the ground motion properties such as duration and the presence of ‘pulse-like’ qualities have an influence on the measured acceleration and excess pore pressure response even if the intensity of shaking is relatively similar. However, this distinction was generally not captured by the two constitutive soil models considered in this study. Additionally, both of the constitutive soil models significantly underestimated volumetric settlements in the ‘free-field’. The 2D validation undertaken in this study showed that, while the numerical simulations were not able to capture volumetric settlements well, the simulations using PM4Sand generally provided good estimates of total settlement of the structure. The numerical simulations also provided relatively comparable acceleration response in the soil beneath the structures and the ii acceleration response at the base and top of the structure. However, more variability between the measured and simulated excess pore pressure response in the liquefiable soils was noted. The research undertaken in this study shows that numerical simulations are generally able to capture important mechanisms due to liquefaction. In this study, a better response was obtained using the PM4Sand constitutive soil model when simulating ‘free-field’ conditions. However, it should be noted that this observation is based on comparisons against one centrifuge experiment and for the soil parameters adopted in this study.

It addresses the repeatability, variability, and sensitivity of lateral spreading observed in twenty-four centrifuge model tests on mildly sloping liquefiable sand. The centrifuge tests were conducted at nine different centrifuge facilities around the world. For the first time, a sufficient number of experiments were conducted to enable assessment of variability of centrifuge test results. The experimental data provided a unique basis for assessing the capabilities of twelve different simulation platforms for numerical simulation of soil liquefaction. The results of the experiments and the numerical simulations are presented and discussed in papers submitted by the project participants. The work presented in this book was followed by LEAP-Asia that included assessment of a generalized scaling law and culminated in a workshop in Osaka, Japan in March 2019. LEAP-2020, ongoing at the time of printing, is addressing the validation of soil-structure interaction analyses of retaining walls involving a liquefiable soil. Book excerpt: Soil liquefaction and the transient response of the fully coupled soil skeleton -- pore fluid systems in general, have been a major area of interest and research for the geotechnical earthquake community. Numerical simulation and analysis of such problems have mainly been based on formulations assuming incompressibility of the pore fluid while neglecting its acceleration. This approach leads to the need of artificial damping (Rayleigh damping) and furthermore, it commonly faces issues like volumetric locking. Herein, a different generalized formulation, called u - p - U, has been numerically implemented intending to overcome the aforementioned weaknesses by approaching the physics of the porous media related problems in a more consistent way. This formulation takes into account the relative displacement of the fluid to the solid skeleton. The current study focuses on the verification and validation of this formulation, in order to obtain a deeper insight to the performance and versatility of its numerical implementation. Verification has been achieved through comparison with analytical solutions for elastic porous media existing in literature. Validation was conducted through the numerical simulation of a centrifuge test performed in the framework of VELACS project. Thus, the contribution of the present thesis is to provide to the geotechnical community with a powerful numerical tool for simulating liquefaction related phenomena. This numerical tool includes an advanced formulation and a rigorous sophisticated constitutive model in the framework of critical state theory. A major advantage of this u - p - U formulation, which has rarely been implemented before, is the fact that the damping is obtained through solid skeleton - fluid interaction. Thus, no Rayleigh damping is needed, in contrast to the widely so far used formulations. In addition, u - p - U formulation resolves the issue of volumetric locking, which is usually encountered in fully -- coupled numerical analyses. Furthermore, the material model used can capture efficiently the mechanisms of softening/hardening as well as dilating/contracting response of both loose and dense states of sands. The present study has verified and validated the aforementioned numerical code. Thus, the numerical code can be used for further research in the field of solid skeleton - fluid interaction, so that a better understanding and accurate prediction can be acquired for soil response due to liquefaction.

New results obtained by numerical analysis of non-stationary wave propagation are presented. The cases studied comprise simulations of the propagations of both one-dimensional and two-dimensional non-stationary waves. Waves of the first type are supposed to propagate in continuously inhomogeneous, linearly viscoelastic cylinders, whereas waves of the second type propagate in continuously inhomogeneous elastic cylinders. The authors of this chapter apply an original research method consisting of the implementation of solutions to dynamic problems in the study of elastic and linearly viscoelastic piecewise homogeneous bodies.Chapter II outlines an analytical study of the propagation of different types of waves (plane, cylindrical, spherical) as well as of the waves' interaction with an element of Vibro-isolation (specifically, a three-layer plate). The author also presents the numerical results of the study of the distribution of the vibration accelerations in soil.Chapter III presents details on the analytical modeling of a bearing device for passive seismic isolation (friction-pendulum system). The behavior of the slider is identical to a motion of a particle constrained to slide on a spherical surface. The analytical model includes equations of motion, derived using the Lagrange formalism and constitutive equations of the sliding interface. The author presents the results of the numerical simulation of the response of the bearing device to a seismic event, assuming a constant value of the friction coefficient.Chapter IV proposes a discussion on the assessment of the load-carrying capacity of a metal-resin anchor and the determination of dependencies between parameters of supporting systems that include anchors. The solution to the problems addressed in this study involves an accurate analysis of the load transfer mechanisms between different system components. The proposed strategy requires the implementation of an algorithm aimed at the reconstruction of the analytical form of a function, provided its tabular form is available. The authors also formulate a theorem that postulates the existence of such representation applicable in a more general context.The research object in Chapter V is the formulation of the boundary value problems for circular and annular three-layer plates subjected to axisymmetric loading. The considered plates consist of three layers: two thin bearing layers and one filler layer, with a perfect bond, assumed for all interfaces. The definition of the stress-strain state in the plates presumes that the Kirchhoff's hypotheses regarding the bearing layers and the Timoshenko's hypothesis (i.e., linear distribution of the tangential displacements over the thickness) concerning the filler layer hold. The performed analyses take into account the characteristics of the elastic (Winkler) foundation. The authors provide the obtained analytical solutions to the formulated boundary value problems. Results obtained by numerical analysis of the stress and the strain distributions for plates supported by hinges on the contour are also presented.

Book excerpt: A numerical procedure, coded into a numerical code (MISS3D-EqL), is developed to accommodate for the effects of the nonlinear soil behavior on the soil-structure interaction (SSI) using an equivalent linear approach. Equivalent linear behavior is assumed for the soil, while the response of the structure to the ground shaking and its effects on the soil are properly taken into account using the substructure method. The proposed procedure is validated against other numerical software and experimental means, such as shaking table and centrifuge tests. The effects of the equivalent linear soil behavior on the soil-structure system response are clearly demonstrated by analyses of representative case studies. A recursive analysis of typical soil profiles and infrastructures is performed to reveal the further softening of the system and the increased energy dissipation, compared to the linear case, due to the equivalent linear soil behavior. Special emphasis is given to the estimation of the foundation dynamic impedance functions. Dynamic stiffness and radiation dashpot coefficients are estimated for typical footings resting on typical soil profiles with equivalent linear behavior. The effects of the nonlinear soil behavior on the dynamic coefficient are shown compared to the linear elastic case. The dynamic stiffness coefficient decreases with increasing input acceleration amplitude, with decreasing soil shear wave velocity and with decreasing soil shear modulus, while it depends on the frequency content of the earthquake. The radiation dashpot coefficient is unaffected by the nonlinear soil behavior for most practical applications.
