Book excerpt: An NPR Best Book of 2017 Heiress to the nearly forty-billion-dollar L’Oréal fortune, Liliane Bettencourt was the world’s richest woman and the fourteenth wealthiest person. But her gilded life took a dark yet fascinating turn in the past decade. At ninety-four, she was embroiled in what has been called the Bettencourt Affair, a scandal that dominated the headlines in France. Why? It’s a tangled web of hidden secrets, divided loyalties, frayed relationships, and fractured families, set in the most romantic city—and involving the most glamorous industry—in the world. The Bettencourt Affair started as a family drama but quickly became a massive scandal, uncovering L’Oréal’s shadowy corporate history and buried World War II secrets. From the Right Bank mansions to the Left Bank artist havens; and from the Bettencourts’ servant quarters to the office of President Nicolas Sarkozy; all of Paris was shaken by the blockbuster case, the shocking reversals, and the surprising final victim. It all began when Liliane met François-Marie Banier, an artist and photographer who was, in his youth, the toast of Paris and a protégé of Salvador Dalí. Over the next two decades, Banier was given hundreds of millions of dollars in gifts, cash, and insurance policies by Liliane. What, exactly, was their relationship? It wasn’t clear, least of all to Liliane’s daughter and only child, Françoise, who became suspicious of Banier’s motives and filed a lawsuit against him. But Banier has a far different story to tell... The Bettencourt Affair is part courtroom drama; part upstairs-downstairs tale; and part characterdriven story of a complex, fascinating family and the intruder who nearly tore it apart.

Cain creates a novel of acute social observation and devasting emotional violence, with a heroine whose ambitions and sufferings are never less than recognizable. Mildred Pierce had gorgeous legs, a way with a skillet, and a bone-deep core of toughness. She used those attributes to survive a divorce and poverty and to claw her way out of the lower middle class. But Mildred also had two weaknesses: a yen for shiftless men, and an unreasoning devotion to a monstrous daughter.

Book excerpt: Anna is sick of spending Valentine's Day alone. When a chance online meeting reunites her with her college roommate's ex, she must confront feelings she had long ago forgotten, and kept hidden for years. Accepting Josh's invitation to a Valentine's Day gathering, she finds herself thrust into a situation she could have never imagined. Torn between loyalty and loneliness, Anna embarks upon an adventure that will make this year's holiday one to remember...and for once, she just might find out what it's like to be the most popular girl at the party. Approximate Length: 9,330 words (A short story) Adult content warning This ebook contains material not suitable for readers under 18. It also contains scenes that some may find objectionable, including ménage sex, anal sex, double penetration, and voyeurism. Excerpt: She had almost finished with her exercise in self-assurance when she was startled by a strange sound from outside of the bedroom. It had seemed almost like someone yelling, and Anna was caught off-guard, instantly surprised and unsure what to do. She quickly crossed the bedroom once more, and as if in some bizarre parody of a spy movie, glanced around the doorframe, unsure of what she thought she'd see. An open area that was centered above the staircase dominated the second floor. On either side of this void was a landing that led to a foyer at the far end, wide windows once again looking out upon the property in what was the central and elegant theme of the house. Equidistantly spaced along each landing was a series of doors that Anna assumed led to various guest rooms. Gingerly, she stepped out on the landing, making her way to the foyer at the far end, still unsure of herself. She was just beginning to contemplate going back downstairs to rejoin Josh at the party, when she heard the sound once again. This time, it sounded more like a moan to her, not like someone crying out, and she was certain that it came from behind one of the rooms adjacent to the foyer. She walked slowly up to the door, listening, but the moaning sound did not come again. Anna rolled over in her mind what course of action she should take. She could go down and alert Josh that she had a suspicion that one of his guest was sick, and hiding themselves away upstairs, but then she'd have to explain what she had been doing snooping around his second floor. If she was going to make such an admission, it was better to be sure, wasn't it? Still though, she wasn’t sure what else the sound could be. It was definitely a person, and they definitely sounded like they were in pain. Her curiosity aroused, she realized that once again, she didn't really have any choice; just like she wouldn't have forgiven herself for passing up the opportunity to reconnect with Josh, so she wouldn't be able to simply turn away from what she had heard in the room beyond. Placing her hand upon the knob, she quietly turned it, and opening the door just a crack, peered stealthily around the edge. The room before her was a mirror image of the one she had just been in, although the windows faced out upon the front lawn of the house, instead of the backyard. A door on the far wall led to a bathroom, and a large, four-post bed of antiquarian manufacture took up the far wall. Expecting to see someone curled upon the bed, sickened and in pain, what she saw there instead made Anna sharply draw in a breath. She raised her free hand to her mouth in an unconscious gesture of surprise.

Book excerpt: "A fresh look at infidelity, broadening the focus from the havoc it wreaks within a committed relationship to consider also why people do it, what it means to them, and why breaking up is the expected response to duplicity — but not necessarily the wisest one.” — LA Review of Books From iconic couples’ therapist and bestselling author of Mating in Captivity comes a provocative and controversial look at infidelity with practical, honest, and empathetic advice for how to move beyond it. An affair: it can rob a couple of their relationship, their happiness, their very identity. And yet, this extremely common human experience is so poorly understood. What are we to make of this time-honored taboo—universally forbidden yet universally practiced? Why do people cheat—even those in happy marriages? Why does an affair hurt so much? When we say infidelity, what exactly do we mean? Do our romantic expectations of marriage set us up for betrayal? Is there such a thing as an affair-proof marriage? Is it possible to love more than one person at once? Can an affair ever help a marriage? Perel weaves real-life case stories with incisive psychological and cultural analysis in this fast-paced and compelling book. For the past ten years, Perel has traveled the globe and worked with hundreds of couples who have grappled with infidelity. Betrayal hurts, she writes, but it can be healed. An affair can even be the doorway to a new marriage—with the same person. With the right approach, couples can grow and learn from these tumultuous experiences, together or apart. Affairs, she argues, have a lot to teach us about modern relationships—what we expect, what we think we want, and what we feel entitled to. They offer a unique window into our personal and cultural attitudes about love, lust, and commitment. Through examining illicit love from multiple angles, Perel invites readers into an honest, enlightened, and entertaining exploration of modern marriage in its many variations. Fiercely intelligent, The State of Affairs provides a daring framework for understanding the intricacies of love and desire. As Perel observes, “Love is messy; infidelity more so. But it is also a window, like no other, into the crevices of the human heart.”
