Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kanauj is of high antiquity and renown. Founded long before the dawn of the Christian era, it first rose to importance in the sixth century a.d. when it became the capital of the Maukharis and when it grew rapidly in authority and influence till its conflict with later Guptas. This followed Harsa of Thaneswar assuming control of affairs in Kanauj. Harsa`s death plunged Kanauj into anarchy and darkness that lasted for about half a century. However, as a result of the protracted campaigns of the next rulers, Pratiharas, Kanauj grew to enormous dimensions camprising territories as widely apart as Saurastra and North Bengal, Magadha and Rajputana till it fell from its high position because of armed adventures of Mahmud and then Sihabuddin Ghori. History of Kanauj presents, in short the story of this ancient realm which is full of political vicissitudes and ephemeral grandeur.

Book excerpt: This volume on the twelfth and thirteenth centuries starts with Vidyakara`s retrospect over anonymous poets (named ones having mostly found their places in earlier volumes). After some smaller anthologies a few novels and Mankhaka`s mythological epic we come to a historical epic. History is the most substantial source of matter for literature in the volume. That might seem to contrast with Vol. Vi, but as literature its aim is always are, not facts which narrows the gap.

Book excerpt: The object of this volume is to provide within a moderate compass a compendious account of the history, institutions, and culture of ancient India from the dim ages of antiquity to the establishment of Moslem rule. It has not been planned to meet the needs of any particular class of readers. Its primary purpose is to serve alike students, scholars, and all others, interested in the study of ancient Indian history, as a book of ready use and reference. The pages which follow every attempt has been made to avoid presenting a mass of the dry bones of historical fact or over-burdening the account with intricate discussions on knotty problems of history, on the one hand, and giving a mere general and readable survey of India's long and fascinating past, on the other. I have endeavoured to tap and utilise properly the available sources of information, literary, epigraphic, and numismatic, and also to embody and set forth in a consistent manner the results of up-to-date researches on different topics and epochs. All the materials have been patiently sifted and critically examined with the sole desire to arrive at historical truth and scientific accuracy; and the unfortunate tendency, manifest in some modern publications, to extol or decry without warrant any of the manifolds aspects of India's panoramic story, has been scrupulously eschewed This book gives an authoritative, up-to-date, and compendious account of the history, institutions and culture of India from the earliest times to the advent of the Moslem period. It is based on all available materials - literary, epigraphic, and numismatic - and is written in a most elegant, sober, and lucid style. The author brings to bear upon his task not only profound scholarship and critical acumen but also scrupulous regard for historical truth, the accuracy of facts and impartiality of judgement. The merit of the book has been enhanced by an exhaustive Bibliography and a comprehensive Index. Students, scholars and the general reader alike will find the book highly interesting, useful and valuable for study and references.

Book excerpt: We have been inspired by lots of superhero comics published mostly by the western countries where the core of the origination of any superhero is POWERS. And speaking about powers if we draw attention to our culture and ancient reference holy books they speak about power vast in the universe. Due to the complexity of these powers we have been ignoring the deepest secrets hidden in our ancient mythological stories. Hence the story that I bring forward is that powers which existed in our mythological stories or mentioned in the Hindu Vedas have been brought into today's world and a chosen lucky person receives it accidentally. This superhero is called Vajrayudha since he resembles Lord Indra’s weapon Vajra and is more powerful than that now. But after possessing the great powers faces lots of powerful super villains and highly intelligent people whose knowledge of science is bigger or equivalent to our superhero's powers. The entire story board is based on the part in Puranas starting from our great Hindu gods who had faced big battles with the devil (Raskhasa and Asuras). Lord Indra battles Asura Vrita where he receives the mighty weapon from his loyal devotee Sage Dadhichi called Vajrayudha. Such a powerful weapon is a combination of 4 powerful weapons. The protagonist of this story receives the same powers and is a human manifestation of the weapon hence called Vajrayudha.

Book excerpt: Indra, son of Aditi, king of Devas, is the Lord of the east, of Heaven and space. He’s an enemy of the rakshasas. He’s the first one to receive nectar from Garuda after which he protected the Prithvi mountain ranges, created space and placed Dyuloka in its position. But he has one weakness- he cannot stand anyone surpassing his power or position. Amaravathi is his capital and Indrani is his consort. His proud possessions include Ucchaishravas, Iravatha, Kamadhenu, and Kalpavriksha. It was because of his pride that he once angered sage Brihaspathi and lost his kingdom. On killing Vritrasura, he found that he had committed the sin of killing a Brahmin and hence hid himself in the Manas lake. King Nahusha took Indra’s position and became very proud and arrogant. Later Indra performed Aswamedhayajna and regained his lost kingdom. It is because of his own folly that a bird-hero who was stronger than himself, Garuda, was born. Even his Vajrayudha couldn’t hurt Garuda. Later, they both became friends. Indra put emperor Shibi to test and obtained Karna’s kavacha and kundala in order to weaken him and protect his own son, Arjuna. He sent his chariot for Rama to face Raavana in the mighty battle. However, he invited sage Durvasa’s curse due to his pride. Indra came down to earth and conferred on Lord SriKrishna the title Upendra. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Is The First Monograph On Yasovarman Of Kanauj, Dealing Comprehensively With All Aspects Of His History And Career. It Also Critically Surveys The Obscure Political History Of Northern India And Gives A Vivid Account Of The Social And Cultural Life Of The Period. The Work For The First Time Treats At Length The Ancestry And Date Of Yasovarman, The Identification Of The King Of Gauda Killed By Him, The Date Of Yasovarman'S Battle With Lalitaditya And Also Most Tantalizing Problem Of The Successors Of The Kanauj King. And The Author Has Considerably Improved The Earlier Views On These Problems. Dr. Mishra Has Chosen His Hero About Whom So Little Is Known, And He Has Made A Very Good Use Of Rather Scanty Materials At His Disposal. He Has Very Ably Marshalled All Facts That Could Be Culled From All Available Direct And Indirect Sources Having The Slightest Bearing On The Career And Period Of Yasovarman'S Reign, Classified Them In Proper Order And Presented A Very Cogent Story In A Lucid And Persuasive Style. His Presentation Is Very Good, Documentation Very Creditable And Analysis Logical And Critical. His Interpretation Of The Famous Passage In The Gaudavaho (Allegedly Mentioning Lalitaditya'S Invasion Of Kanauj), And Fixing The Date Of (Yasovarman'S) Battle With Lalitaditya Deserves Careful Consideration (Extracts From The Report Of Dr. B.P. Shinha, Professor And Head Of The Deptt. Of Ancient Indian History, Patna University . The Author Is Able To Reconstruct The Course Of Events In Greater Detail Than Before, By A Careful Study Of Recently Published Inscriptional Evidence And From Literary Sources Which Hitherto Have Been Little Noticed In This Context. Thus He Produces A Very Well Reasoned Analysis Of The Subject Which Forms A Very Positive Contribution Of Knowledge. In Social Life, The Nature Of The Material Is Such That Important Original Points Could Not Be Expected, But The Author Makes A Number Of Small Positive Contributions Especially Regarding The Status Of Women And The Dress Of The Period (Extracts From The Report Of Dr. A.L. Basham, Prof. Of Asian Civilization, Australian National University, Canberra).
