In addition, the conventional construction of the building and radiation safety consideration are also needed and finally the beam lines, detector, data acquisition and analysis set-ups for research programs. Dr. L. Teng has given a comprehensive review of the whole complex and the operation of such a facility. I concentrate on the description of magnet and vacuum systems. Only the general function of each system and the basic design concepts will be introduced, no detailed engineering practice will be given which will be best done after a machine design is produced. For further understanding and references a table of bibliography is provided at the end of the paper.

Book excerpt: The combination of a heavy-ion storage ring with the intense photon beams from a synchrotron light source present new opportunities for research in atomic physics. At Brookhaven a design for such a facility has been proposed as the basis of a comprehensive National Atomic Physics Facility. Vacuum considerations are an important factor in its performance since the storage time of the heavy ions in the ring is vacuum-dependent. A vacuum system design for attainment of pressures of order 10/sup /minus/11/ Torr in the heavy-ion ion storage ring is discussed. The photon source will be the x-ray ring of the National Synchrotron Light Source, and the heavy-ion source will be the BNL Tandem Van de Graaff Accelerators. Differential pumping between components of the facility will allow for different pressures in the ion source, accelerators, transfer lines, and storage rings. For some experiments it may be useful to have gas jet or vapor targets in experimental sections viewed by detector systems that are not suitable for use on ultrahigh vacuum systems. Possible solutions to a wide range of vacuum problems are discussed. 8 refs., 2 figs., 2 tabs.

These two requirements makes conventional bent tube manufacturing techniques difficult. The ALS sector vacuum chambers have been made by matching two halves out of aluminum plate and welding at the mid plane. Each of these chambers have over 50 penetrations with metal sealed flanges and seven metal sealed poppet valves which use the chamber wall as the valve seat. The sector chambers are 10 meter long and some features in the chambers must be located to .25 mm. This paper describes how and how successfully these features have been achieved. 2 refs., 5 figs.

Book excerpt: The vacuum systems of the storage rings of the PEP-II B-Factory have had by now over two years of production running at high beam current and seen synchrotron radiation from almost 4 kAh High Energy Ring (HER) and 10 kAh Low Energy Ring (LER) of integrated beam current. The systems have performed well, reaching the design pressures and being able to cope with beam currents of almost 1 A HER and in excess of 2 A LER. The photo-desorption coefficient [eta] was found in the HER to have reached values as low as 10−7. The shielded bellows have performed very well, with only one pair of bellows assemblies damaged due to higher-order mode generation from a known, nearby source. Issues encountered during normal operation have been a significant amount of dust trapping in the HER and the effect of a cloud of photo-electrons around the positron beam affecting the LER beam size. A couple of chambers in the HER failed; these failures arose from a combination of design and fabrications issues. The beam life time in the LER has been lower than expected based on the vacuum pressure and has been determined to be Touschek limited.

The Storage Ring's 1104 m circumference is divided into 40 functional sectors. The sectors include vacuum, beam transport, control, acceleration and insertion device components. The vacuum system, which is designed to operate at a pressure of 1 n Torr, consists of 240 connected sections, the majority of which are fabricated from an aluminum alloy extrusion. The sections are equipped with distributed NeG pumping, photon absorbers with lumped pumping, beam position monitors, vacuum diagnostics and valving. The details of the vacuum system design, selected results of the development program and general construction plans are presented. 11 refs., 6 figs., 3 tabs.

Also, the majority of the storage ring vacuum chambers are made of extruded aluminium. Chamber sections are interconnected using low-impedance radiofrequency shielded bellows. SR from the bending magnets is intercepted by water-cooled compact photon absorbers resided in the storage ring chambers. Finally, this paper presents the design of the storage ring vacuum system, the fabrication of vacuum chambers and other hardware, the installation, the commissioning, and the continuing beam conditioning of the vacuum systems.

The chambers are constructed of aluminum and are approximately 3.5 m in length with a rectangular cross-section of 16.5 cm high by 45 cm at the widest point. The design features, fabrication techniques and cleaning methods for these chambers are described. The beam vacuum system will be pumped by forty eight non-magnetic distributed ion pumps with a total pumping speed of over 2000 l/sec. Monte Carlo simulations of the pressure distribution in the muon storage region are presented.
