Then, if ever, come perfect days; Then Heaven tries the earth if it be in tune, And over it softly her warm ear lays. Whether we look, or whether we listen, We hear life murmur or see it glisten, Everyr clod feels a stir of might, An instinct within it that reaches and towers And, groping blindly above it for light, Climbs to a soul in grass and flowers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My First Trip Abroad: 1906 It was in July of 1906 that I took my first trip to Europe. I intended, before sailing, to go to the country with my family for a few days. Accordingly, we left Broad Street Station on the morning of the 5th of July, at nine o'clock, for Stroudsburg. It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed the ride very much. We arrived at Stroudsburg about noon. Mr. Dickerson met us at the station and drove us to the Inn. After having made us comfortable in our rooms, he announced to us that luncheon would be served at 1.30. There were very few people staying there, so it seemed rather dismal, but as we were hungry we managed to eat as only hungry people can after traveling half a day. There was little or nothing to do there so Mrs. B. and I decided to leave on the following afternoon. When the appointed hour arrived for our departure, we said good-bye to our loved ones who were to remain there for the summer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Autobiography of Robert Standish Sievier, 1906 If I have been somewhat lengthy in explaining these family matters, I crave the indulgence of my readers on the ground that there have been so many rumours and stories in connec tion with me that I feel it better, once and for all, to set at rest the question of whence I came. So here I am, just the ordinary individual, more or less connected in the ordinary way; and except for inheriting my grandfather's volatile characteristics I am nothing out of the common. The romances surrounding adventures, the learning travel instils in us, the glorious uncertainty of sport, the throes Of racing, all these experiences are at anyone's command, but it is the degree of success or failure attending them which creates the interest or loses it. What success or failure has been my share in perhaps one of the most varied careers of any man alive to-day, I will leave my readers to judge; but I preface my autobiography by saying, that except for one or two instances, which rather touch the heart than the conscience, I would willingly live my time over again. Taking my life from the standpoint of a man Of the world that Bohemian world which never encouraged angelic opinions or the views of an extremist - I feel I have no more to reproach myself with than has any other ordinary sinner, while I may at once say that if I were asked which I would sooner be, an angel or a devil, from the accepted standpoint as understood on this earth, I would at once declare myself a devil, for I should then at least escape that greatest of all insidious evils in man - hypocrisy. The man who has no devil in him should have been born a woman, just as much as a woman without love should have been a statue - Galatea reversed. It describes the sexual awakening of the narrator, Charlie Powerscourt, and his friends Bob Rutherford and Jimmy, the Duke of Surrey. The ingenuity of their efforts to achieve sexual release is astonishing, and interwoven with this curious story is some remarkable heterosexual narrative from a sophisticated French friend.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Pilgrimage to the Wise Men of the East I now deem them; and I am reminded by the first chap ter of The Earthward Pilgrimage of my consciousness of being far from any shrine in the direction I was travel ling. There came to me one who spoke with a voice not to be disobeyed. He laid on me a burden, and gave me a shield called Truth, and said: 'henceforth thou shalt be a pilgrim. From a world believing in the incredible, adoring where it should abhor, thou shalt depart never to return. Whither, shall be opened to thee as thou shalt journey; whence, is already plain.' The concluding pages of that first chapter, written on the threshold of my new world, may fairly preface the present work, originally prepared as a part of my Autobiography. Book excerpt: "A Woman of Valour is the biography of Marie-Louise Bouchard Labelle, a French-Canadian woman who found love with a priest thirty-three years her senior. Against all social convention, they lived, produced three children, and built a life together after fleeing their village. However, after several years together, Bouchard's husband ultimately chose to return to the priesthood, abandoning his family as a result. Through interviews and documentation, Claire Trepanier tells Bouchard's story of survival while highlighting the history of women's stature in Canada, and raising a question about the celibacy of Catholic priests."--Publisher's description

Book excerpt: As seen in the new movie The Post, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Meryl Streep, here is the captivating, inside story of the woman who piloted the Washington Post during one of the most turbulent periods in the history of American media. In this bestselling and widely acclaimed memoir, Katharine Graham, the woman who piloted the Washington Post through the scandals of the Pentagon Papers and Watergate, tells her story - one that is extraordinary both for the events it encompasses and for the courage, candour and dignity of its telling. Here is the awkward child who grew up amid material wealth and emotional isolation; the young bride who watched her brilliant, charismatic husband - a confidant to John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson - plunge into the mental illness that would culminate in his suicide. And here is the widow who shook off her grief and insecurity to take on a president and a pressman's union as she entered the profane boys' club of the newspaper business. As timely now as ever, Personal History is an exemplary record of our history and of the woman who played such a shaping role within them, discovering her own strength and sense of self as she confronted - and mastered - the personal and professional crises of her fascinating life.

This book was released on 2023-12-12 with total page 3264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though best known for his adventure novels and humorous stories, Twain was a passionate world traveler and he recorded his journeys in several travel books which were all very popular at the time: "The Innocents Abroad" humorously chronicles Twain's "Great Pleasure Excursion" on board the chartered vessel Quaker City through Europe and the Holy Land in 1867. "Roughing It" follows the travels of young Mark Twain through the Wild West during the years 1861–1867. The book illustrates many of Twain's early adventures, including a visit to Salt Lake City, gold and silver prospecting, real-estate speculation and a journey to the Kingdom of Hawaii. "Old Times on the Mississippi" is a short account of Twain's experiences as a cub pilot, learning the Mississippi river. "A Tramp Abroad" details Twain's journey through central and southern Europe with his friend. As the two men make their way through Germany, the Alps, and Italy, they encounter situations made all the more humorous by their reactions to them. "Life on the Mississippi" is a memoir by Mark Twain of his days as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River before the American Civil War, recounting his trip along the Mississippi River from St. Louis to New Orleans after the War. "Following the Equator" – In an attempt to extricate himself from debt, Twain undertook a tour of the British Empire in 1895, a route chosen to provide numerous opportunities for lectures in English. The book is a social commentary, critical of racism towards Blacks, Asians, and Indigenous groups. "Some Rambling Notes of an Idle Excursion" presents a series of stories about a trip that Twain and some friends took to Bermuda from New York City. "Chapters from my Autobiography" comprises a rambling collection of anecdotes and ruminations of Mark Twain, assembled during his life. Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russell Page, one of the legendary gardeners and landscapers of the twentieth century, designed gardens great and small for clients throughout the world. His memoirs, born of a lifetime of sketching, designing, and working on site, are a mixture of engaging personal reminiscence, keen critical intelligence, and practical know-how. They are not only essential reading for today’s gardeners, but a master’s compelling reflection on the deep sources and informing principles of his art. The Education of a Gardener offers charming, sometimes pointed anecdotes about patrons, colleagues, and, of course, gardens, together with lucid advice for the gardener. Page discusses how to plan a garden that draws on the energies of the surrounding landscape, determine which plants will do best in which setting, plant for the seasons, handle color, and combine trees, shrubs, and water features to rich and enduring effect. To read The Education of a Gardener is to wander happily through a variety of gardens in the company of a wise, witty, and knowledgeable friend. It will provide pleasure and insight not only to the dedicated gardener, but to anyone with an interest in abiding questions of design and aesthetics, or who simply enjoys an unusually well-written and thoughtful book.
