Die beschriebene Gesellschaft mit demokratischen Grundzügen basiert auf rationalen Entscheidungen, Gleichheitsgrundsätzen, Arbeitsamkeit und dem Streben nach Bildung. In dieser Republik ist aller Besitz gemeinschaftlich, Anwälte sind unbekannt, und unabwendbare Kriege werden bevorzugt mit ausländischen Söldnern geführt. Das Buch war so prägend, dass danach Romane, die eine erfundene positive Gesellschaft darstellen, als utopischer Roman oder Utopie bezeichnet werden.
