Book excerpt: Sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy is utilized in this work to study the oxidation of alcohols on platinum catalysts. A brief overview of SFG spectroscopy is provided, including a short theoretical summary of the information pertinent to understand the technique. Background information on the oxidation of alcohols is also provided. A description of techniques and experimental setups is discussed, including detailed information on the preparation of catalysts and SFG laser setups. The oxidation of 1-propanol to propanal by molecular oxygen at 60oC was studied at the solid-liquid and solid-gas interfaces using a range of nanoparticle sizes from 2-7 nm. The reaction rate at the solid-liquid interface was found to be two orders of magnitude greater than that at the solid-gas interface after normalizing to the concentration. In addition, catalytic activity increases with the size of platinum nanoparticles for both reactions. Moreover, water substantially promotes 1-propanol oxidation in the liquid phase, decreasing the activation energy by 21 kJ/mol. However, water inhibits the reaction in the gas phase, increasing the activation energy by 31 kJ/mol. The liquid-phase and gas-phase reactions appear to undergo different mechanisms due to differing kinetic results. This correlates well with different orientations of the 1-propanol species at the solid-liquid interface versus the solid-gas interface as probed by SFG spectroscopy under reaction conditions and simulated by computational calculations. The oxidation of 2-butanol was carried out in both the liquid and the gas phase. Size-controlled platinum nanoparticles loaded into mesoporous silica MCF-17 were synthesized and studied in the oxidation reaction of 2-butanol with molecular oxygen in the gas and liquid phases. The turnover frequency values increased as the nanoparticle size became larger in both phases, with a consistently high selectivity toward 2-butanone. The activation energy in the gas phase was twice as much as that in the liquid phase. Water did not interrupt the reaction progress in the gas phase, while it poisoned the Pt surface fully to decrease the turnover rate significantly in the liquid phase. SFG spectra were taken of the gas-phase 2-butanol reaction on Pt in both reactive and inert conditions. Water was determined to have no significant effect on the 2-butanol spectra, supporting the reaction data. Combined with the DFT calculations, it was determined that the molecule tends to lay down in the low surface concentration but tends to stand up in the high surface concentration. SFG studies were carried out to study the oxidation of 1-butanol on a platinum thin film. These studies examined the effects of oxygen and water on the gas-phase reaction. Spectra of 1-butanol were taken in both nitrogen and oxygen environments, providing information about both the reactive and inert conditions. Spectra were also taken of 1-butanol in the presence of oxygen and water in order to study the effect of water on the surface. 1,3-butadiene hydrogenation was performed on 4 nm Pt, Pd, and Rh nanoparticles encapsulated in SiO2 shells at 20, 60, and 100°C. The core-shells were grown around PVP-coated nanoparticles prepared by colloidal synthesis. SFG spectroscopy was performed to correlate surface intermediates observed under reaction conditions with reaction selectivity. Using SFG, it was possible to compare the surface vibrational spectra of Pt@ SiO2, Pd@ SiO2, and Rh@ SiO2. These studies that the calcination is effective at removing PVP, and that the SFG signal can be generated from the metal surface through the outer SiO2 shell. This work was then used to investigate Pt@SiO2 nanoparticles as potential catalysts for the liquid-phase oxidation of isopropanol. It was found that these nanoparticles were successful in the gas and liquid phases for reaction studies. However, despite several attempts, a clear SFG spectrum was not able to be obtained on a Langmuir-Blodgett film of these nanoparticles.

Only with the invention of ultrahigh vacuum technology in the past half century has it been possible to carry out experiments that yield useful molecular information about the reactive occurrences at a surface. The reason is two-fold: low pressure is necessary to keep a surface clean for an amount of time long enough to perform an experiment, and most atomic scale techniques that are surface speci c (x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, et cetera) cannot be used at ambient pressures, because electrons, which act as chemical probes in these techniques, are easily scattered by molecules. Sum-frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy is one technique that can provide molecular level information from the surface without the necessity for high vacuum. Since the advent of SFG as a surface spectroscopic tool it has proved its worth in the studies of surface catalyzed reactions in the gas phase, with numerous reactions in the gas phase having been investigated on a multitude of surfaces. However, in situ SFG characterization of catalysis at the solid-liquid interface has yet to be thoroughly pursued despite the broad interest in the use of heterogeneous catalysts in the liquid phase as replacements for homogeneous counterparts. This work describes an attempt to move in that direction, applying SFG to study the solid-liquid interface under conditions of catalytic alcohol oxidation on platinum.

At 40 torr of CO, the Pt(111) crystal dissociates CO at 673 K. Under the same conditions, Pt(100) dissociates CO at 500 K, and Pt(557) dissociates CO at 548 K. Hence, the CO dissociation reaction is a structure sensitive reaction. SFG was used to monitor the CO top site resonance as the platinum crystals were heated to the dissociation temperature when exposed to 40 torr of CO. In all three systems, the CO resonance shifts to lower frequency as the platinum crystal is heated. However, the frequency of the CO resonance at the dissociation frequency is lower on the (100) and (111) crystal faces than on the Pt(557) crystal. We believe that the (111) and (100) crystal faces must undergo roughening to expose step or kink sites in order to facilitate the dissociation reaction. This is supported by UHV studies of CO dissociation catalyzed by platinum crystals. These studies observe dissociation only when step or kink sites are present. Since the Pt(111) surface is very stable, it needs to be heated to 673 K to produce the low coordination number sites needed for CO dissociation. Since the Pt(100) surface easily reconstructs, it is able to form the active sites for CO dissociation at relatively low temperatures. The SFG spectra support our conclusion that the CO molecules are sitting on low coordination number platinum atoms at the dissociation temperature. Since the Pt(557) surface already has step sites, the dissociation reaction can take place without further roughening of the surface. The CO resonance on the (557) crystal face at the dissociation temperature is at a very similar frequency to CO molecules adsorbed on only the step sites of the crystal. Further studies showed that the dissociation reaction takes place on the (557) surface at CO pressures as low as 1 torr. At 1 torr of CO, the carbon deposition rate is 1.0 x 10−2 ML minute−1. A series of experiments at CO pressures ranging from 5 to 20 torr leads to a 0.8 order dependence of the dissociation reaction on CO pressure.

Book excerpt: In the results discussed above, it is clear that Sum Frequency Generation (SFG) is a unique tool that allows the detection of vibrational spectra of adsorbed molecules present on single crystal surfaces under catalytic reaction conditions. Not only is it possible to detect active surface intermediates, it is also possible to detect spectator species which are not responsible for the measured turnover rates. By correlating high-pressure SFG spectra under reaction conditions and gas chromatography (GC) kinetic data, it is possible to determine which species are important under reaction intermediates. Because of the flexibility of this technique for studying surface intermediates, it is possible to determine how the structures of single crystal surfaces affect the observed rates of catalytic reactions. As an example of a structure insensitive reaction, ethylene hydrogenation was explored on both Pt(111) and Pt(100). The rates were determined to be essentially the same. It was observed that both ethylidyne and di-[sigma] bonded ethylene were present on the surface under reaction conditions on both crystals, although in different concentrations. This result shows that these two species are not responsible for the measured turnover rate, as it would be expected that one of the two crystals would be more active than the other, since the concentration of the surface intermediate would be different on the two crystals. The most likely active intermediates are weakly adsorbed molecules such as [pi]-bonded ethylene and ethyl. These species are not easily detected because their concentration lies at the detection limit of SFG. The SFG spectra and GC data essentially show that ethylene hydrogenation is structure insensitive for Pt(111) and Pt(100). SFG has proven to be a unique and excellent technique for studying adsorbed species on single crystal surfaces under high-pressure catalytic reactions. Coupled with kinetic data obtained from gas chromatography measurements, it can give much insight into how the structure of a single crystal surface affects the chemistry of a catalytic reaction by detecting surface species under reaction conditions.
