Book excerpt: When palm oil mill effluent (POME) was treated anaerobically with sludge obtained from the anaerobic lagoon in the mill, a mixture of short-chain organic acid intermediates were produced if the activity of the methane-producing bacteria is inhibited. Separation of acetic acid from the treated POME by ion exchange chromatography was examined as a preliminary study of recovering acetic for subsequent use in the fed-batch culture of Alcaligenes eutrophus for the production of bacterial polyhydroxybutyrate. At a low pH level, acetic is strongly adsorbed on the anion exchange resin. When 0.25 M ofacetic acid was introduced to the anion exchange chromatographic column, more than 1.0 M of concentrated acetic acid was obtained by eluting with 1.0 M of HCI solution.

These are well-studied polymers containing at least one monomer synthesized via bacterial transformation. Among them, PHA, PLA and PBS are well known for their biodegradability, whereas PE, PTT and PPP are probably less biodegradable or are less studied in terms of their biodegradability. Over the past years, their properties and appli- tions have been studied in detail and products have been developed. Physical and chemical modifications to reduce their cost or to improve their properties have been conducted. PHA is the only biopolyester family completely synthesized by biological means. They have been investigated by microbiologists, molecular biologists, b- chemists, chemical engineers, chemists, polymer experts, and medical researchers for many years. PHA applications as bioplastics, fine chemicals, implant biomate- als, medicines, and biofuels have been developed. Companies have been est- lished for or involved in PHA related R&D as well as large scale production. It has become clear that PHA and its related technologies form an industrial value chain in fermentation, materials, feeds, and energy to medical fields.

The starting COD of the feed effluent was fixed at 16,500 mg/l. Studies were conducted at both mesophilic (30 and 35 C) and thermophilic (55 C) tempe for various hydraulic retention times. It was found that for retention times of 10 days or more, most of the process parameters remain relatively constant. Under mesophilic conditions the pH was about 7.0, volatile acids at around 1,000 mg/l and alkalinity in the of 4,000 to 4,500 mg/l. In the thermophilic case, the pH was higher at between 7.9 and 8.3, volatile acids of 1,500 to 2,000 mg/l and alkalinity varying between 2,500 and 4,000 mg/l. Over 80% COD reduction could be obtained but only 50% of the total solids was degraded for both digestions.
