Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Utah and Her People (Illustrated): Containing a Sketch of Utah and Mormonism, the Doctrine of the Mormon Church, and Resources and Attractions of the State Kindly received by the pe0p1e of Illinois, the expatriated com munity settled on the east shore of the Mississippi, in Hancock County, where they founded their beautiful city of Nauvoo, surrounded by other Mormon settlements, both in Illinois and Iowa. There they remained for seven years, increasing rapidly by immigration from the Eastern States, Canada and Great Britain, until they aggregated twenty thousand souls. Religious and political animosity still pur sued them, and finally, on the 27th of June, 1844, their Prophet, Joseph Smith, and his brother Hyrum, the Patriarch of the Church, who had surrendered for trial on a trumped up charge of treason and riot, were murdered in Carthage jail by an anti-mormon mob, while under the pledged protection of the Governor of the State. Justice was never done upon the murderers. Under Brigham Young, the successor to Joseph Smith, the Mormon people, in February, 1846, began their famous exodus from Illinois, leaving Nauvoo with its Temple, which had just been dedi cated, to be pillaged and desecrated by their enemies. From their scattered camps in Iowa and on the Missouri, in the summer of that year, went forth at the call of their country the Mormon Battalion. Book Synopsis Being and Becoming Ute by : Sondra G Jones
Download or read book Being and Becoming Ute written by Sondra G Jones and published by . This book was released on 2019-02-28 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sondra Jones traces the metamorphosis of the Ute people from a society of small, interrelated bands of mobile hunter-gatherers to sovereign, dependent nations--modern tribes who run extensive business enterprises and government services. Weaving together the history of all Ute groups--in Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico--the narrative describes their traditional culture, including the many facets that have continued to define them as a people. Jones emphasizes how the Utes adapted over four centuries and details events, conflicts, trade, and social interactions with non-Utes and non-Indians. Being and Becoming Ute examines the effects of boarding--and public--school education; colonial wars and commerce with Hispanic and American settlers; modern world wars and other international conflicts; battles over federally instigated termination, tribal identity, and membership; and the development of economic enterprises and political power. The book also explores the concerns of the modern Ute world, including social and medical issues, transformed religion, and the fight to perpetuate Ute identity in the twenty-first century. Neither a portrait of a people frozen in a past time and place nor a tragedy in which vanishing Indians sank into oppressed oblivion, the history of the Ute people is dynamic and evolving. While it includes misfortune, injustice, and struggle, it reveals the adaptability and resilience of an American Indian people.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Utah and Her People: Information for Tourists From early springtime until the beginning of winter these great gorges, through which the waters of the mountains escape from imprisonment, are a constant delight to the lover of nature and furnish delicious places of rest and recreation for the tired business man and the wearied housewife. Ican add nothing to what has been said and sung, in every land and language, about the great, blue sea that lies to the west of us. It is the crowning glory of the landscape, the wonder of the world. Can you show me another spot on Mother Earth where such a combination is found? There are cities that point with pride to their mountains, others boast of their lake front, and still others of their valleys or beautiful homes. Here, we fortunate people have them all - mountains, canyons, lake and valley embraced in one grand scheme of beauty - iand over all a sky as blue as any that bends over sunny Italy.
