Book Synopsis Law, Force and Diplomacy at Sea (Routledge Revivals) by : Ken Booth
Download or read book Law, Force and Diplomacy at Sea (Routledge Revivals) written by Ken Booth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-27 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Law, Force and Diplomacy at Sea, first published in 1985, is one of the few comprehensive treatments on the subject from a strategic perspective. It offers a detailed strategic analysis of the background and outcome of the Third UN Conference on the Law of the Sea, and its naval implications. The interplay between the interest of the naval powers in freedom of navigation and the interest of coastal states in control provides the setting for the strategic problems. The sea is taking on more properties of the land: it is becoming ‘territorialised’, and this is presenting fresh challenges and opportunities to which navies and their national governments have to respond. This study is designed for students of naval strategy, for international lawyers and for students of international affairs who wish to think about the important security questions in the maritime environment.

Book Synopsis U. S. S. Cyclops by : Marvin W. Barrash
Download or read book U. S. S. Cyclops written by Marvin W. Barrash and published by . This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From the day it was realized that the U.S.S. Cyclops would never arrive at her destination, much attention has been drawn to the subject of this colossal collier. Many have been curious because of the mystery surrounding her disappearance in the area known as the Bermuda Triangle. Others are interested in naval history and some because of a family connection to a member of her crew. This study provides an objective look at the U.S.S. Cyclops; escorting readers through the multitude of stacks of documentation of this yet-to-be solved case. Conflicting points of view are presented. That is especially the case with the story about the Cyclops' only commanding officer, George W. Worley. The U.S.S. Cyclops served a vital role in the Navy, in peace as in war. As a fuel ship the Cyclops did not offer her crews glamorous tours of duty. Being assigned to the U.S.S. Cyclops meant hard work, long days, and the handling of thousands of tons of coal. Most days on board the U.S.S. Cyclops have been accounted for within these pages. Dates on which only negligible activity, such as when clothes washing occurred, have not been included. In a few instances, log book pages for a few dates appear to have been lost. The Cyclops logs from January 1, 1918 and later were likely on board the ship when she was lost. Events related to the ship beyond December 31, 1917 have been found in-part within the log books of other vessels or from other documentation. Information pertaining to War Risk Insurance and pilgrimages to France are included as they affected surviving family members. This is as much a finding aid for most information related to the U.S.S. Cyclops as it is a narrative history. As much as possible, each source used in this study has been identified in detail as to permit further research by the reader." -- from cover.

Download or read book Ultimate Security written by Norman Myers and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I do not see how anyone can claim to be informed about what is probably humanity's single most important problem without having read Ultimate Security." -Robert Heilbroner, New School of Social Researc. "In a provocative description of the new concept of environmental security, which he helped establish, the author offers much evidence that environmental factors-from deforestation and desertification to global warming and ozone depletion-will loom larger in world affairs. His book is chockablock with recent portents ... and [predictions of] loss of stability or out-and-out conflict over natural resource related issues." -Publishers Weekl. "Myers, a widely published professional conservationist, brings together seven regional case studies and five global case studies to support his thesis that 'environmental problems will likely become predominant causses of conflict in the decades ahead.' Writing for the general public, Myers draws upon his field work in over 80 countries as well as his work with the World Commission on Environment and Development. ... [He] marshals compelling data about the environmental threat and sounds the alarm that political leadership is failing to respond. An interesting, lively book." -Library Journal
