Book excerpt: "From the day it was realized that the U.S.S. Cyclops would never arrive at her destination, much attention has been drawn to the subject of this colossal collier. Many have been curious because of the mystery surrounding her disappearance in the area known as the Bermuda Triangle. Others are interested in naval history and some because of a family connection to a member of her crew. This study provides an objective look at the U.S.S. Cyclops; escorting readers through the multitude of stacks of documentation of this yet-to-be solved case. Conflicting points of view are presented. That is especially the case with the story about the Cyclops' only commanding officer, George W. Worley. The U.S.S. Cyclops served a vital role in the Navy, in peace as in war. As a fuel ship the Cyclops did not offer her crews glamorous tours of duty. Being assigned to the U.S.S. Cyclops meant hard work, long days, and the handling of thousands of tons of coal. Most days on board the U.S.S. Cyclops have been accounted for within these pages. Dates on which only negligible activity, such as when clothes washing occurred, have not been included. In a few instances, log book pages for a few dates appear to have been lost. The Cyclops logs from January 1, 1918 and later were likely on board the ship when she was lost. Events related to the ship beyond December 31, 1917 have been found in-part within the log books of other vessels or from other documentation. Information pertaining to War Risk Insurance and pilgrimages to France are included as they affected surviving family members. This is as much a finding aid for most information related to the U.S.S. Cyclops as it is a narrative history. As much as possible, each source used in this study has been identified in detail as to permit further research by the reader." -- from cover.

Book excerpt: Clue after clue laid down a disturbing trail for investigators that culminated not in the finding of the body of the crime but in the most remarkable and frustrating disappearance in nautical history- the vanishing of a 20,000 ton ship and 309 crew. The only logical answer seemed hard to believe- betrayal. The difference between the fated voyage of HMS Bounty and U.S.S. Cyclops may be that the Cyclops was a complete success. The US Navy, though they searched for years, never found Cyclops' Pitcairn. But is it true that no trace was ever found of the great ship? Gian Quasar, considered the foremost investigator of popular mysteries, dug into the voluminous records to rediscover what had so disturbed the Navy in 1918. Like with story of Flight 19, Quasar pulls the Cyclops from the clutches of Bermuda Triangle legend to reveal that the Navy was justified to suspect mutiny and treason. Now 95 years later, for the first time, the story of what could be America's greatest sea betrayal is told, the events leading up to and after the last voyage of the Cyclops. The US Navy still boasts it has never suffered a mutiny, and they may still do so. But after reading A Passage to Oblivion, we may well ask if this nation has not suffered something far more intriguing and tragic than that which befell the king's Bounty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When you think of a shipwreck, what image springs to mind? A tall sailing ship on the rocks, or perhaps the sinking Titanic surrounded by lifeboats? Historian Richard M. Jones has put together 50 stories of lost ships throughout history that are among the most important, infamous and in some cases tragic ships in the whole of history. When did two liners collide and lead to one of the greatest rescues in history? How did a Scotsman become an American hero against his own country? Which warship sank with gold bullion on board during the Second World War? This book tells the story of these fascinating cases plus many more, explores the largest shipwrecks, the treasure wrecks and the ones that are talked about still as the most famous. Starting at the tiny island of Alderney in 1592, we take a journey through history, through the First and Second World Wars, into the age of the passenger ferry and finally to the modern day migrant issues in the Mediterranean Sea. Never before have these fifty wrecks come together in a book that really brings home to the reader just how many lost vessels there are, how deadly many can be and what this teaches us today about our own history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known for antebellum mansions and sunny beaches, Alabama also claims an abundance of fascinating mysteries and legends. The White Thang is a Sasquatch-like creature that has terrorized Alabamians for generations. For a brief period in the 1980s, Needham gained national attention because of its "crying pecan tree." In 1854, a farmer named Orion Williamson simply vanished in a field in Selma. From the aquatic beast known as the Coosa River Monster to the story of the Leprechaun of Mobile, these stories have evolved over generations. Author Alan Brown presents some of the strangest stories from this collective tradition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A front row seat to the breaking news, photos and hype surrounding history's most mysterious disappearances. Breaking History books offer a front row seat to history as it broke (like “breaking news”) and give the blow-by-blow of historical discovery—what we learned, when we learned it, who made the discovery, and how. Vanished! is an illustrated tour of history’s most confounding cases of disappearance from Amelia Earhart to Jimmy Hoffa; DB Cooper; Alcatraz escapists Frank Morris, John Anglin, and Clarence Algin; Jim Thompson; Judge Joseph Force Crater; and more. Starting with the first 30 days surrounding each incident, and then looking at efforts up to this very day to solve each case, this book covers in photos and text history’s most perplexing vanishings.
