To address this, the Community Influences Transitions in Youth Health (CITY Health II) study focused on decreasing HIV transmission rates among 18- to 25-year-old African American emerging adults living in resource-poor southern urban communities. CITY Health II is a 5-year HIV prevention study that tests the efficacy of a peer-driven entertainment education intervention compared with an attention-control intervention using a cluster randomized trial design. We enlisted nine musicians and groups to help us create an entertaining and educational web-based video series, "The Beat HIVe," for study participants to view on smartphones and share with peers on social media. Videos each consist of a brief question-and-answer session with the artists about central HIV prevention topics, followed by a performance of their original material. Data collection interviews at baseline, 3-month, and 6-month follow-up assessed sociodemographics, risk and protective behaviors, social networks, and peer norms. This case study highlights two novel research methods that bring unique strengths to increase research rigor and feasibility. Respondent-driven sampling (RDS) is a recruitment method that accesses participants' existing social networks to recruit a representative sample from the target population. Timeline Followback is a calendar-based interview method designed to facilitate recall by quantifying specific risk behaviors over time. Outcomes from this study will help to inform optimal ways to reach at-risk populations through education entertainment and peer diffusion to improve sexual health behaviors.

HIV testing is both an essential mechanism to support the accurate epidemiological tracking of the disease, and a crucial entry point into treatment for individuals who are infected with HIV. This cross-sectional study involving a probability sampling of adult residents of an impoverished, African American, high HIV prevalence community in northwest Baltimore was conducted to determine barriers to HIV testing on individual and system levels. The study's door-to-door household survey approach supported the goal to identify lower risk residents. An 84-question survey instrument, based on a conceptual framework loosely modeled on the Health Belief Model but tailored to an urban minority population, was used to explore both subjects' internal decision-making around HIV testing and systemic barriers to HIV testing. The instrument was implemented via face-to-face interviews with 223 adults between 18 and 88 years that were conducted in each subject's home. Regression analysis revealed that knowledge about HIV/AIDS, high risk behaviors, and perceived susceptibility to infection are all significantly associated with HIV testing, and that testing is widespread among 25 to 44-year-olds. Subjects' main reasons for testing included concerns about exposure and doctors' recommendations to get tested; subjects' reasons for not testing included the conviction that committed relationships do not carry risk, and a general lack of concern. The study's important implications included (1) perceived risk may not correlate with actual risk, and (2) a majority of subjects reported behaviors that place them at medium or high risk for infection. The disconnect between perceived and actual risk was most evident among women whose perceived In summary, while the study found no major barriers to HIV testing among an impoverished, urban, minority population, findings related to risk hold implications for HIV prevention efforts designed to reduce heterosexual transmission of the virus. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to conduct a phase I trial to further test the content and construct validity of the Afrocentric website, Positive Living - HIV Facts on the Internet for African Americans. A sample of 17 African American adults was given a two-week period to review an Afrocentric-based website that was designed to provide information about HIV prevention and disease management. The content and construct validity was assessed in two phases. Phase I of the website's content validity and accuracy was assessed, via expert consultants in the areas of behavioral medicine and HIV medical disease treatment. After the critiques offered by the experts were incorporated into the website's design and content, the website was evaluated a second time to assess its ability to educate and raise awareness about HIV in the African American community. The data revealed that the knowledge of HIV prevention was significantly greater than before they used the website. The average pre-test score for the men was 41.6% (SD = 9.3) while the average pre-test score for the women was 48.4% (SD = 9.3). The average post-test scores for the women increased to 52.8% (SD = 14.8), but not as much as the average post-test score men, 60.5% (SD = 13). An overall, twenty-eight percent (28%) increase of knowledge was reported. The website proved to be a viable source of information to educate African Americans about HIV disease and prevention.
