Fluency is defined as the ability to read accurately, quickly, and effortlessly with appropriate expression and meaning, is an important aspect of reading because it is the bridge between word recognition and comprehension. This study was concluded in a second grade classroom of 21 students in the fall of 2008. Selected students were chosen to practice and read aloud one poem a week for an eight-week study. Throughout the study, fluency data was collected by listening and timing individuals. Fluency was measured by pre and posttest, and teacher rubric. Results of the study showed a significant growth in fluency among all students involved in this study. While there may be other contributing factors, using poetry can help increase fluency scores.

The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.

This study used a quasi-experimental pretest/posttest design with 1 treatment group and 1 comparison group. For a period of 7 weeks, the researcher implemented 1 poem per week with a small group of 6 Second Grade subjects during the fall trimester of the 2009-2010 school year. Subjects were chosen based on student scores on the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System. The Macmillan Second Grade Benchmark Assessment was given as a pretest to establish baseline scores and as a posttest to determine the outcome. An anecdotal journal was also used to monitor the progress of subjects during the research study. Explicit plans were developed and followed to maximum the educational potential of the poems read during the small group reading time of the treatment group. Results indicated an increase in the fluency test scores of the involved subjects. The results may be due to the inclusion of repeated reading of poetry as a focal point of instruction.

As determined by the Ohio Department of Education, 75% of the students in each building must score at or above the proficient level. For the 2008-2009 school year Building A, a school within one of Ohio"s urban settings, had a passage rate of 65.7% and Building-B, in the same district, had a lower passage rate of 58.1%. To evaluate the effectiveness of the 10-week repeated reading session of poetry and prose the following research questions were addressed: (a) What is the effect of repeated readings of poetry versus repeated reading of narrative passages on fluency (Words Correct Per Minute) over a 10-week intervention?(b) What is the effect of repeated readings of poetry versus repeated reading of narrative passages on fluency (prosody) over a 10-week intervention? (c)What is the effect of repeated readings of poetry versus repeated reading of narrative passages on reading comprehension over a 10-week intervention? (d)What is the effect of repeated reading of poetry on students' attitudes toward reading as compared to the repeated readings of narrative passages? Mixed methods design was selected for this study due to both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection. The quantitative data represents the scores on the pre- and post-tests of Words Correct Per Minute, retelling rubric, Elementary Reading Attitude Survey, and prosody rubric. The qualitative data within the study consisted of student questionnaires, student interviews, and teacher journals following the 10-week repeated readings project. Within this study, statistical significance was demonstrated in the areas of improvement in Words Correct Per Minute, phrasing, and smoothness, making repeated readings a viable addition to reading instruction. Additionally, the results suggested that attitudes toward reading for poetry were more positive than attitudes toward reading of narrative passage.

A fluent reader not only demonstrates ease of word recognition but also indicates that the reader comprehends what is read. This is articulated by the reader's ability to interpret the text with variations in volume, tempo, rhythm and all the nuances embedded in "prosody" or proper phrasing and expression. Students enter second grade with knowledge of word decoding skills and vocabulary recognition. Reading may sound choppy and robotic. In second grade, the students need fluency instruction and opportunities to practice reading aloud to develop this reading skill. Often classroom instruction is focused on phonics and comprehension strategies and teaching students how to read fluently is missing from the lesson plan. The researcher questioned if it can be useful to instruct students to become fluent by teaching or demonstrating for example the importance of "chunking" words into phrases and using punctuation and speed to assist in interpreting the text. Can reading fluency improve with additional practice? Will repeated reading, a researched based strategy, improve reading fluency? With these questions in mind, the researcher conducted a case study using repeated reading with four struggling second grade students. During the course of four weeks, this small group met with researcher for thirty minutes each day receiving fluency instruction and reading poetry aloud. Upon the completion of the study, data was collected and analyzed. All students demonstrated improvement in fluency assessment and reading accuracy. Some students experimented with interpretation. The results of this study indicate that fluency instruction and practice using repeated reading is a successful strategy and should be included in the elementary classroom.

For elementary school teachers, helping students become proficient readers is one of the greatest impacts they can make in a studentâ€TMs academic career. It is essential that students receive reading strategies in the classroom that have strong research support. Instructional strategies that have been shown to improve reading fluency include: repeated reading, listening passage preview, and phrase drill. Through the use of such evidence-based, procedurally standardized intervention strategies, teachers may be able to make meaningful contributions to improve studentsâ€TM reading fluency. This study was conducted in an effort to bridge research to practice by offering an example of effectiveness (versus efficacy) research on a multi-component, evidence-based reading fluency intervention referred the Helping Early Literacy with Practice Strategies (HELPS) Program. The primary purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the HELPS Program with low-performing second grade students when implemented by four classroom teachers and teacher assistants in a minimally controlled setting. Results from the study suggested that 29 students who received HELPS significantly improved (from pre-test to post-test) on the measure of basic reading competence when compared to a control group of 30 students, with low-performing students who received HELPS making significantly larger reading gains than students who did not receive the program. In addition, the study demonstrated that such outcomes are achievable when teachers and teacher assistants implement the program. Given these findings, HELPS appears to be a useful and practical tool for educatorsâ€TM use in elementary school settings.

Book excerpt: The non-fluent readers in my second grad classroom had low fluency and comprehension scores, but were not eligible for additional reading assistance through Title 1 or special educational instruction. I implemented the Read Naturally program, a repeated reading program, with these students over a nine week period during the first quarter of the 2008-2009 school year. The Standardized Test for the Assessment of Reading, the Basic Reading Inventory, and fluency probes, which are measures used by the Alburnett Community School District, were given as pretests and posttests for this pre-experimental approach to research, utilizing a one-group pretest-posttest design. Teacher recorded bi-weekly comprehension and fluency assessments, as well as a journal were utilized to monitor the progress of the subjects during the treatment period. Students worked with Read Naturally for 30 minutes, four times per week. Read Naturally is a fluency based program which utilizes repeated reading strategies to improve and develop the skills necessary to become fluent oral readers through the utilization of books, audiotapes, and computer software to develop speed, accuracy, and proper expression in oral reading practices. Results showed significant gains in the areas of fluency and comprehension of students involved in the study. Te results may be due to the implementation of the Read Naturally program.

The results of this study showed an increase in fluency from pre- to post-assessment using the BRI, and students and parents felt fluency had increased as well.

Each fluency lesson was organized into four components: a focus on meaning, modeling, guided practice and in dependen practice. A variety of echo and choral reading activities helped students attain fluency with the passage alongside a fluent reader, which in this case was the researcher. The assisted reading activities took place multiple times throughout the week for reinforcement and practice. The data indicated an overall increase in reading fluency rate for the students involved n the study.
