The results of this eight-week case study showed that metacognitive training and think-alouds led students to increase their use of reading strategies after instruction but continued to struggle with choosing the most appropriate strategy for a given reading." --

Book excerpt: We had our first conversation about cognition, metacognition, and reading in September of 1976. Our particular concern was with reading and learning to read, and what, if anything, meta cognition might have to do with it all. We didn't really know much about metacognition then, of course, but then most other people were in the same predicament. Some people had been working with interesting approaches and results on metalanguage and reading, among them J. Downing, L. Ehri, L. Gleitman, 1. Mattingly, and E. Ryan, and it also was about that time that people were becoming aware of E. Markman's first studies of comprehension monitoring. Other than that perhaps the most influential item around was the perhaps already "classic" monograph by Kruetzer, Leonard, and Flavell on what children know about their own memory. Also in the air at that time were things like A. Brown's notions about "knowing, knowing about know ing, and knowing how to know," D. Meichenbaum's ideas about cognitive behavior modification, and the work by A. Brown and S. Smiley on the awareness of important units in text. Even though these developments were cited as new and innovative, it was not the case that psychologists had never before been of questions. They certainly interested in, or concerned with metacognitive sorts had, as clearly evidenced by the notion of "metaplans", in Miller, Galanter, and Pribram's Plans and the Structure of Behavior.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This qualitative research study chronicles the observed behaviors and reported experiences of 25 fifth grade students as they engage in the use of metacognitive strategies while interacting with informational texts, in response to the modeling of the strategy use through think-alouds. This study was conducted in an elementary school, consisting of approximately 450 students in eastern Pennsylvania from urban, suburban, and rural areas. To foster students into more active readers who interact more critically with texts, as well as to promote increased student achievement and confidence when faced with the unique challenges and demands of informational pieces of writing, students reflected on think-alouds and the explicit instruction of the teacher and then transferred those experiences to their own guided practice and independent reading. Data were collected frequently through student surveys, examples of student work, and Scholastic Reading Inventory assessments, as well as observations. Through analyzing the data, it became evident that through frequent explicit instruction in strategy use, guided practice during Guided Reading with informational texts, application across disciplines, and abundant opportunities to utilize the metacognitive strategies independently with self-selected books, students demonstrated more confidence when faced with demanding texts, were more willing to be risk-takers during small group instruction, and utilized more strategic approaches to interacting with informational passages.

Book excerpt: This study assessed the effect that the use of the think-aloud strategy had on improving reading comprehension of struggling middle school readers. The study consisted of a six-week intervention in which the student were provided instruction in the use of the think-aloud strategy three days each week during their small-group reading class. Seven students, four boys and three girls, from an urban, public school near Milwaukee, Wisconsin, participated in this study. The researcher used marked think-aloud passages from the Qualitative Reading Inventory-V (Leslie & Caldwell, 2010), the Fountas and Pinnell reading assessment, and MAPs (Measures of Academic Progress) in order to obtain data before the onset of the study and at the end of the study in order to gauge its effectiveness. Additionally, the researcher monitored progress through the use of guided and independent practice on the use of think-alouds on high-interest reading passages. Data findings indicated that the treatment had a positive impact on the students' ability to answer explicit comprehension questions. The study did not positively impact the students' ability to answer implicit questions. Teachers who are considering using the think-aloud strategy should consider examining this study.
