Book excerpt: Documents the construction and performance of the research study which was initiated to address section 1038(d) of the 1991 Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA). The project selected to demonstrate the crumb rubber process was located on Platt Canyon (SH 75) from Bowles to C470 in the Denver metropolitan area. The project was a low volume roadway and quantities of crumb rubber introduced into the mix were minimal. This was to reduce risk in terms of premature failure and Colorado's limited experience with crumb rubber. Because of this limited experience, the "dry" process was selected. The project contained four different mix designs. A mix containing 1% [20 lb/ton (10 kg/Mg)] crumb rubber, a mix containing 1 lb/ton (0.5 kg/Mg), a mix containing 3 lb/ton (1.5 kg/Mg) and a mix which contained no rubber were placed on the project.

Book excerpt: This synthesis on the use of recycled rubber tires in highways will be of interest to administrators and policy-makers; pavement, materials, geotechnical, environmental, and traffic operations engineers; and research engineers involved with highway design and construction issues. Information is provided on the uses of rubber tires in asphalt paving materials as well as other uses, such as on fills and embankments, for erosion control and on railroad grade crossings. Specifically, information is included which identifies the agencies using or implementing applications for recycled rubber tires and defines the design parameters, technical and construction limitations, performance, costs, benefits, environmental limitations, specifications, and availability. This synthesis of information defines the use of recycled rubber tires in highways and is based on a review of nearly 500 references and on information recorded from state highway agency responses to a 1991 survey of practice. Updates are included for as much of the state practice information possible through 1993. The use of scrap tires for highway applications is dynamic with regard to policy and technical issues. Therefore, the reader should keep in mind that the information presented reflects the best available data at a particular time. The synthesis also identifies current research in the topic area, critical research needs, and legislative issues that affect application and use of recycled rubber tires.

Book excerpt: Ground tire rubber (GTR) from scrap tires is used in asphalt mixtures (rubber modified asphalt [RMA]) for improving the performance of pavements. There are different ways to add GTR in asphalt mixtures, but the two primary methods are referred to as the “wet” and “dry” processes. The dry process incorporates GTR directly into the asphalt mixture during production (directly to the aggregates through the reclaimed asphalt pavement collar). The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has limited experience with RMA mixtures in Superpave dense-graded mixtures using the dry process, but the relative ease of mixture production makes the dry process an attractive option for RMA. In the fall of 2019, VDOT placed a dense-graded RMA mixture, SM 12.5 (GTR), on US 60 in VDOT’s Richmond District (New Kent County). This was the first use of a SM 12.5 (GTR) mixture in Virginia using the dry process method. The purpose of this study was to establish a performance baseline for a GTR modified dense-graded asphalt mixture that was designed and produced using the dry process. The US 60 project also included the use of a thin hot mix asphalt concrete overlay (THMACO) as an interlayer. An assessment of the THMACO as an interlayer was a secondary objective of the study. The study found that dry process SM 12.5 (GTR) mixture can be produced and placed with no significant field-related concerns and that the special provision developed for its use was effective. Density requirements were achieved, and the as-placed mat had excellent (very low) permeability characteristics. Laboratory performance testing showed the SM 12.5 (GTR) mixture to be more crack resistant than conventionally modified polymer (SM 12.5E) mixtures. Conventionally modified SM E mixtures had slightly better rutting performance. However, this conclusion was based on performance testing and thresholds that were developed for non-modified asphalt mixtures. Additional laboratory and field performance comparison is needed to develop mixture acceptance criteria for GTR mixtures. Further, THMACO mixtures had excellent laboratory reflective cracking resistance properties. They performed particularly well in the Texas overlay test. Grading of extracted (from the asphalt mixture) binder may not provide an accurate representation of the binder performance for the dry process GTR modified asphalt. Continued monitoring of performance will be needed to quantify any benefit of SM 12.5 (GFR) mixtures in comparison with regular SM E mixtures. The study recommends additional field trials with SM 12.5 (GTR) mixtures for performance evaluation. Further, the study recommends continued use of a THMACO as an interlayer to mitigate reflective cracking for composite pavements.

Book excerpt: Asphalt binder modification is a common method of improving Hot-mix Asphalt (HMA) performance by enhancing mix properties and reducing or delaying three general HMA distress types: deformation (rutting and shoving), cracking (from repeated loads and low temperatures) and general deterioration (raveling and stripping). Since the early 1960’s, a common modified asphalt alternative has employed reclaimed rubber as an economical and environmental friendly method of recycling waste tires while improving asphalt physical and mechanical properties. Pavement network deterioration combined with increasing material costs makes polymer modification of asphalt binder desirable, with reclaimed rubber from waste tires being an attractive alternative which addresses performance, economics and environmental issues. The primary objective of this dissertation is to demonstrate the importance of proper processing of all types of modified bituminous binders, whether they be virgin (e.g. styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) or styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR)), post-consumer polymers (e.g. ground tire rubber (GTR)) or a combination (GTR plus SBS). To achieve this four secondary objectives were identified: 1) characterize GTR using thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), 2) improve processing of GTR modified binders, 3) improve testing and specifications of GTR modified binders and 4) evaluate mixes containing GTR modified binders. A simple efficient instrumental, TGA, method to analyze polymers in binary rubber compounds was developed to quantify the functional polymer content available in GTR. TGA analysis provides a better understanding of the general chemical characteristics of GTR used in modification of asphalt binders for production of asphalt paving mixtures. Results are presented from efforts to optimize GTR modified binder formulations with respect to how GTR loading, GTR particle size, processing temperature and asphalt cement source affect modified binder properties and ability to meet performance graded binder specifications. These results are the basis to establish recommended processing parameters for formulation and preparation of GTR modified asphalt binders. GTR modified binders were used in: dense graded asphalt (DGA), stone matrix asphalt (SMA) and open graded friction courses (OGFC) and compared to conventional asphalt cement and styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modified asphalt binders. Mixture performance evaluation with respect to binder effectiveness as it relates to the three general HMA distress types.

This technology includes any use of scrap tire rubber in asphalt paving materials. In general, CRM technology can be divided into two categories--the wet process and the dry process. When CRM is incorporated into an asphalt paving material, it will modify the properties of the binder (asphalt rubber) and/or act as a rubber aggregate (rubber modified hot mix asphalt). The five concepts for using CRM discussed in the report are McDonald, PlusRide, generic dry, chunk rubber asphalt concrete, and continuous blending asphalt rubber. An experimental work plan for monitoring performance and a stack emission testing program are also included.

Book excerpt: Abstract : Ground tire rubber (GTR) is a problematic waste material because it is not biodegradable. One possibility for recycling GTR is to use it as a raw material for pavement construction. GTR has attracted much attention from research institutes and the road industry because of the contribution it makes towards reducing improper waste disposal and promoting environmental sustainability. The objective of this thesis is to evaluate the performance of GTR modified asphalt mixture and styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modified asphalt pavement by a dry process and evaluating the long-term aging performance of the GTR modified asphalt mixture. This thesis conducts the mix design of HMA incorporated with scrap tire rubber by dry process in the lab and determine the gradation of aggregate, asphalt binder content, moisture susceptibility results. The high-temperature rutting and stripping performance was estimated through the Hamburg wheel tracking device (HWTD). The low-temperature cracking resistance was evaluated by the Disc-shaped compact tension (DCT) test. The solvent extraction test was used to obtain the GTR-modified asphalt and polymer-modified asphalt, then the high temperature and low temperature of asphalt binder were estimated by the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and asphalt binder cracking device (ABCD). The field noise test was conducted after the construction. The long-term aging process for asphalt binder is pressure aging vessel (PAV), and the long-term aging process for asphalt mixture is conditioned at 85 °C for 5 days. The predicted pavement distresses were estimated based on the pavement M-E design method. The results showed that the GTR-modified asphalt mixture improve the high-temperature rutting and low-temperature cracking properties compared with the conventional asphalt mixture, after long-term aging, the GTR-modified asphalt still has the best cracking resistance compared with the conventional asphalt mixture and SBS modified asphalt mixture. In summary, the implementation of rubber technology in the project shows better high-temperature rutting and low-temperature cracking performance in asphalt pavement. Moreover, the GTR-modified asphalt mixture has comparability with polymer-modified asphalt mixture. Therefore, it is possibly acceptable to apply rubber technology to asphalt pavement when used for high-volume roads in Michigan's wet-freeze environment.
