Book excerpt: "Skillful use of communication and collaboration among healthcare team members is associated with favorable patient outcomes. Providing student nurses opportunities to develop these essential and intertwined skills helps to optimize specific patient outcomes and meet national patient safety objectives. This practice change project implemented a two-pronged strategy of an educational workshop with situation, background, assessment, recommendation (SBAR) communication role play followed by participation in collaborative clinical assignments. Eight associate degree nursing students in their second clinical semester were paired to share responsibility for planning, implementing, evaluating and documenting care for two patients. Communication skills were developed through ongoing student interaction and by practicing SBAR formats of nurse-to-nurse hand-off reports and nurse-to-provider patient status reports. Reports were scored by tools constructed for this project. Comparison of post-intervention scores to pre-intervention scores showed significant improvement of student ability to communicate essential patient data following collaborative assignments. Comparison of the post-intervention group's scores with a non-intervention group's scores showed mixed results. Other observed benefits included student satisfaction and additional opportunities for assessment of student comprehension. This educational strategy provides a cost-effective assignment option for nurse educators looking to stimulate student acquisition of requisite communication and collaboration skills in clinical practice." -- Abstract.
