Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experiments With the Displacement Interferometer Among the subjects selected for treatment was the horizontal pendulum. In the first part of Chapter I certain available forms of the pendulum, with and without a float, are considered and tested as to their discrepancies, through long lapses of time, by a reflection method. Among the interesting results obtained is the suggestion of an apparatus capable of measuring changes of elongation to the amount of even less than 4xi0'1 of the total length per vanishing interference ring. In the second part of the chapter the interferometer itself is used, a service able method of application worked out, and the range of application studied through many months. With a relatively very Wide scope (several seconds of arc) there should be no difficulty, under proper surroundings, of measuring changes of inclination as small as 3 X 10 - 4 seconds of arc per interference ring, and it is probable that one could reach smaller angles by modifying parts of the pendulum. In Chapter II an attempt is made to use this interferential horizontal pen dulum for the measurement of the gravitational attraction of two parallel disks. What was obtained, however, was a definite repulsion of the disks, decreasing with their distance apart and appreciable even within mm. Of this distance. As the method of measurement contemplates the viscosity of the film of air between the disks, and as the efiect of any natural charge or potential would be insignificant in comparison with the forces observed, it is probable that the repulsion in question is attributable to the molecular atmospheres by which the disks are surrounded in air, supposing that such atmospheres of gas increase in density as the surface of the disk is approached. Chapter III is introduced as a severe test on the interference equation employed for the case of path differences resulting when glass columns as much as 10 inches long are inserted in one of the component beams of the displacement interferometer. It appears that the constants of any dispersion formula may be obtained directly from these observations. The equations for the relations of displacement and wave-length increments show, however. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods of Gas Analysis In publishing my "New Methods for the Analysis of Gases," it was not my intention to write a manual of gas analysis, but merely to describe my own researches and the construction of apparatus. My present plan, however, after ten years' experience and the most varied work with gases and their analysis, is to describe all of the operations which are involved in the analysis of gases with my apparatus. I have thought to give the book especial value by limiting myself to the description of those methods which, in my opinion, are at the present time the most practical. I have not endeavoured to give a complete description of all known methods, because the book would then become too bulky to be used as the laboratory guide which it is intended to be. The apparatus devised by Pettersson has been described, because a wholly new principle in the measurement of gases is there brought into use. In the following pages I hope to give a guide to gas analysis by the help of which the various examinations, even the most difficult, can be carried out. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Interferometry of Reversed and Non-Reversed Spectra, Vol. 2 The third and fourth chapters are incidental applications of the displace ment interferometer and contain experiments on the expansion of metal tubes by internal pressure and on a promising method of measuring the refraction of glass, irrespective of form. To my out the experiments in the last case with requisite rigor, optic plate-glass apparatus would unquestionably be essential. Nevertheless the tentative data Obtained are noteworthy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Interferometer Experiments in Acoustics and Gravitation A more suitable field for testing the immediate capabilities of the mercury U-tube is detailed in Chapters III and IV, where the endeavor is made to give an account of the pressures and dilatations observable in a region vibrating acoustically. If this is quite closed or quite open to the atmosphere, the rec ord of the U-tube within is without interest; but if the region is all but closed up - open, for instance, through a pin-hole less than mm. In diameter - the gage shows pronounced fringe displacements as a rule and particularly at the frequency of the harmonics. If the sound generator is a telephone, the displacements are proportional to the effective currents actuating it and at the harmonics much more than Ohms may be put in circuit before the fringes cease to move appreciably. Similarly under low resistance, very small fractions of a semi-tone are registered and the ear becomes a poor ap paratus for discrimination. The investigations are made along two lines, in the first of which the sound generator and the U-tube lie within the boundary carrying the pin-hole; in the second the sound generator lies without and is independent, so that the pin-hole valve carried on a long tube becomes an appropriate probe, or sonde, for the pressures Within sounding pipes and cavi ties. As all the harmonics are thus saliently registered, there should be no serious difficulty in exploring the acoustics of the mouth cavity uttering word sounds, for instance. A curious result of the survey of the distribution of pressure increments in relation to pitch is the replacement of pressures by dilatations in different orders of frequency. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Technical Gas-Analysis During the twelve years succeeding the second edition of the Handbook, the methods of Technical gas-analysis have been the subject of numerous investigations and publications which have brought about very important changes in that branch of chemical science. When, therefore, the time had come for issuing a new edition, the Author decided not to go over the old ground again, but to start on a fresh basis, and to describe the methods of Technical gas-analysis in his own way, using Winkler's book merely as one of various sources, apart from his own investigations. The result was the composition of this present treatise, which the Author has tried to make as comprehensive and generally useful as possible, without attempting to mention everything published on the subject in question - a course which would have unduly swelled the size of the volume, without corresponding benefit to the reader. He hopes that his effort may be appreciated as successful by the chemists working on gas-analysis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
