Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Pollution of the earth's water resources, including freshwater sources such as lakes and rivers, by heavy metals have been a detriment to the environment for as long as the industrial age of man. As these metallic pollutants accumulate in the supply of precious groundwater and drinking water the need for clean-up technologies to combat the increasing threat is becoming of more importance to government and industry alike. Previous work has established the possibility of using known chelating agents, such as LIX-54 supported on silica gel in the removal of selected heavy metal ions such as copper(II), nickel(II), and cadmium(II) from standard aqueous solutions (Norris and coworkers, 1996). Remediation of heavy metals using coordinating agents such as dithiooxamides and aliphatic amines has also been an environmental cleanup technology that has proven to be effective in the uptake of selected heavy metals from aqueous media (Poore and coworkers, 1996).

Unfortunately, many of the available water resources are becoming increasingly polluted as a result of the direct discharge of industrial effluents. Heavy metals pollution, in particular, is an environmental problem of global interest due to their high toxicity, even at very low concentrations, and persistence in nature. Many methods are available for metal ions removal including adsorption which is attracting a lot of attention recently. Zeolites are well known for having very high exchange capacities. On the other hand, many researchers are studying the removal of heavy metals by modified mesoporous materials or carbonaceous adsorbents. In this thesis, the adsorption efficiencies of several materials for heavy metal removal in aqueous phase were investigated and compared to those of the faujasite NaX zeolite. Mesoporous silica SBA-15, SBA-16, KIT-6 were synthesized and modified with EDTA. Moreover, CMK-3 carbon was nano-casted from SBA-15 then the physic-chemical properties of these materials were characterized by different techniques. The effects of several experimental conditions on adsorption such as pH, contact time, temperature, metal ions concentration and the presence of competitors were studied in batch experiments. Then the efficiency of all these materials was also studied in a dynamic fixed bed reactor. Based on the obtained results, it could be said that all these materials are good candidates for divalent heavy metals removal from waste water even at low concentration. However, CMK-3 material has a high sorption capacity even in presence of competitor species.

Book excerpt: In this work a new method of production of MCM-41 was used which involved synthesis under mild conditions (room temperature) and shorter reaction times as well as reduced surfactant removal times (15 min) compared to the previously published methods that take approximately 10 h. This material was functionalised with an amine-based functional group to study the feasibility of separation of chromium (III) and chromium (VI) from aqueous solution. A maximum adsorption capacity calculated using Langmuir isotherms of 111.1 mg g-1 was achieved, which was higher than previously reported for competitive sorbents. Moreover, adsorbents containing silica nanoparticles with different porosity parameters were synthesized and evaluated for Cr (VI) uptake. The adsorption mechanism was defined by a two step adsorption mechanism for AP-MCM-41 while other sorbent exhibited a fast one step adsorption mechanism. The regeneration of MP-MCM-41 loaded with Hg (II) ions was also investigated with batch and dynamic methods using thiourea that was acidified using HNO3, H2SO4, or HCl; with HCl being the most efficient with recovery efficiency of over 90 %.A simple, rapid, bio-inspired green silica material was then developed producing a silica material with iron nanoparticles being incorporated into the framework (Fe-GN). The efficiency of Fe-GN material for the removal of arsenic ions from contaminated solution was evaluated. The material was found to be effective for the removal of arsenate ions with a maximum adsorption capacity of 69 mg/g of Fe-GN. Moreover, a method was developed to regenerate the Fe-GN allowing for full recovery and reuse of the adsorbent in subsequent extractions. Finally, the Fe-GNs material, along with other conventionally available materials, was assessed for the removal of naphthalene from aqueous solutions. The Fe-GN material was found to only have a slight affinity for the adsorption of naphthalene.

Book excerpt: Heavy metal contamination of soil and groundwater has been a concern in water supply and public health in many countries where the water supply system draws primarily from groundwater. In the present study, mixed maghemite-magnetite nanoparticles have been used as adsorbents for Cr(VI), As and Cd(II) removal. From the study, it is apparent that the removal of Cr(VI), Cd(II) and As(V) by mixed iron oxide nanoparticles depends on pH, temperature, contact time, solid/liquid ratio and initial concentration of heavy metals. The results showed that Cr(VI) adsorption on mixed maghemite-magnetite was dependent on solution pH between 3 and 6. Theoretical multiplet analyses in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) study showed that during Cr adsorption, the amount of maghemite increased from 70 to 89%. Fe(II) was transformed into Fe(III) by the redox reaction and Cr(VI) species were reduced to Cr(III) species. In arsenic removal study, it was found that the percent of maghemite also increased for As(V) and As(III) adsorption. At the same time, the percentage of magnetite was reduced for both cases. Thus, a redox reaction occurred on the mixed magnetite-magheamite surface when arsenic was introduced. In cadmium removal study, adsorption capacity of mixed magh emite- magnetite for Cd(II) ions increased with an increase in the pH of the adsorbate solution. The results showed that 0.8 g/L of 20-60 nm maghemite-magnetite particles removed up to 1.5 mg/L Cd. The XPS surveys confirmed that As, Cr(VI) and Cd(II) ions may undergo oxidation-reduction reactions upon exposure to mixed maghemite-magnetite, or may be fixed by complexation to the oxygen atoms in the oxyhydroxy groups. The investigation of transport and chemical states analysis during a rsenic removal by monolith slag from nickel smelting revealed that slag was efficient in arsenic removal, attaining equilibrium sorption capacities in the range of 1000-1054 g/g for an initial arsenic concentration of C 0 = 10 mg/L. Column studies showed the sorption of arsenic by smelter slag (a waste material) was complex and involved both c hemisorption and physical sorption. Sorption capacities for As(V) were significantly higher for Ni smelter slag. Raman spectroscopy and XPS results demonstrate that the As reacted with a large proportion of the slag in the experiment. Thus, further investigation woul d be necessary to evaluate the applicability of mixed iron oxide loaded particles for subsurface remediation at field scale.

Water contamination by organic and inorganic compounds is hazardous to both the environment and human health. Adsorption techniques have gained much attention in the field of water remediation due to their efficiency, simplicity in operation, and ease of implementation. However, the adsorbents currently being used are costly. The main objective of this work is to develop novel, low-cost adsorbents from waste material by modifying the adsorbent surface for water remediation. Adsorbent modifications involve various chemical and physical methods such as acid/base treatments, metal/metal oxide impregnation, functional group alteration, and steam/air activation. In chapter I, these modification methods are summarized along with characterization techniques and adsorption interactions available for contaminant removal. In chapter II, a novel activated carbon is introduced from the fruit of Garcinia cambogia with acid activation, for the removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from water. Activated carbon was prepared by soaking dried Garcinia cambogia pieces in 85% phosphoric acid and carbonizing at 650 °C in a muffle furnace for 1 h. Chapter III describes the modification of waste tire rubber as an adsorbent for heavy metal ion removal. This modification was done by mixing ground tire rubber (GTR) with chitosan dissolved acetic acid (2%) solution followed by NaOH treatment. Chitosan modified-GTR successfully removed more Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions than GTR, suggesting added amine groups on the GTR surface through chitosan modification enhanced the heavy metal ion adsorption. In chapter IV, caffeine, ibuprofen, and acetylsalicylic acid removals by hybrid magnetic Fe3O4/Douglas fir biochar adsorbent are discussed. Adsorptions were compared with non-magnetic Douglas fir biochar. The surface chemistry and composition of modified adsorbents were examined by SEM, SEM-EDX, TEM, PZC, XRD, XPS, FTIR, TGA, elemental analysis, and surface area measurements.

Book excerpt: Silica gel modified with oligomer semicarbazide-phethalic acid (OSCPA) was prepared and successfully used in separation and pre-concentration of heavy metal ions: Cu +2 ,Co +2 , Ni +2 . The complexes of with Cu(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) with the prepared oligomer during the solid phase extraction have been characterized using elemental analysis, spectral ( 1 H-NMR, IR and UV-Visible spectroscopy) and magnetic measurements. The Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) oligomer complexes are proved to have octahedral dimmer. Thermal analysis (TGA, DTA) and activation energies for the complexes have been calculated. The oligomer greatly enhanced the activity of silica gel for extraction of metal ions from aqueous solution.
