Book excerpt: This open access book brings together research studies, developments, and application-related flash flood topics on wadi systems in arid regions. The major merit of this comprehensive book is its focus on research and technical papers as well as case study applications in different regions worldwide that cover many topics and answer several scientific questions. The book chapters comprehensively and significantly highlight different scientific research disciplines related to wadi flash floods, including climatology, hydrological models, new monitoring techniques, remote sensing techniques, field investigations, international collaboration projects, risk assessment and mitigation, sedimentation and sediment transport, and groundwater quality and quantity assessment and management. In this book, the contributing authors (engineers, researchers, and professionals) introduce their recent scientific findings to develop suitable, applicable, and innovative tools for forecasting, mitigation, and water management as well as society development under seven main research themes as follows: Part 1. Wadi Flash Flood Challenges and Strategies Part 2. Hydrometeorology and Climate Changes Part 3. Rainfall–Runoff Modeling and Approaches Part 4. Disaster Risk Reduction and Mitigation Part 5. Reservoir Sedimentation and Sediment Yield Part 6. Groundwater Management Part 7. Application and Case Studies The book includes selected high-quality papers from five series of the International Symposium on Flash Floods in Wadi Systems (ISFF) that were held in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2020 in Japan, Egypt, Oman, Morocco, and Japan, respectively. These collections of chapters could provide valuable guidance and scientific content not only for academics, researchers, and students but also for decision-makers in the MENA region and worldwide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid climatic changes linked to global warming, ongoing changes in land-use patterns, and growing international concern with the environment it is increasingly important to understand the potential impact of these changes on the environment. Rainfall-runoff modeling is an important predictor of that impact. This book introduces rainfall-runoff models that have been developed over the past 24-30 years, giving examples of their practical applications. It provides a summary of available techniques for rainfall modeling based upon the most recent research, but in a way that serves as a primer for the subject. Provides an overview of how catchment rainfall-runoff systems work A history of rainfall-runoff models Examples of models can be downloaded over the Internet Looks at uncertainty in model prediction

Book excerpt: This important monograph is based on the results of a study on the identification of conceptual lumped rainfall-runoff models for gauged and ungauged catchments. The task of model identification remains difficult despite decades of research. A detailed problem analysis and an extensive review form the basis for the development of a Matlab? modelling toolkit consisting of two components: a Rainfall-Runoff Modelling Toolbox (RRMT) and a Monte Carlo Analysis Toolbox (MCAT). These are subsequently applied to study the tasks of model identification and evaluation. A novel dynamic identifiability approach has been developed for the gauged catchment case. The theory underlying the application of rainfall-runoff models for predictions in ungauged catchments is studied, problems are highlighted and promising ways to move forward are investigated. Modelling frameworks for both gauged and ungauged cases are developed. This book presents the first extensive treatment of rainfall-runoff model identification in gauged and ungauged catchments.

The book provides both a primer for the noviceand detailed descriptions of techniques for more advancedpractitioners, covering rainfall-runoff models and their practicalapplications. This new edition extends these aims to includeadditional chapters dealing with prediction in ungauged basins, predicting residence time distributions, predicting the impacts ofchange and the next generation of hydrological models. Giving acomprehensive summary of available techniques based on establishedpractices and recent research the book offers a thorough andaccessible overview of the area. Rainfall-Runoff Modelling: The Primer SecondEdition focuses on predicting hydrographs using modelsbased on data and on representations of hydrological process.Dealing with the history of the development of rainfall-runoffmodels, uncertainty in mode predictions, good and bad practice andending with a look at how to predict future catchment hydrologicalresponses this book provides an essential underpinning ofrainfall-runoff modelling topics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil hydrology determines the water–soil–plant interactions in the Earth’s system because porous medium acts as an interface within the atmosphere and lithosphere; regulates main processes such as runoff discharge, aquifer recharge, movement of water, and solutes into the soil; and ultimately the amount of water retained and available for plants growth. Soil hydrology can be strongly affected by land management. Therefore, investigations aimed at assessing the impact of land management changes on soil hydrology are necessary, especially to optimize water resources. This Special Issue collects 12 original contributions addressing the state-of-the-art advances in soil hydrology for sustainable land management. These contributions cover a wide range of topics including (i) the effects of land use change, (ii) water use efficiency, (iii) erosion risk, (iv) solute transport, and (v) new methods and devices for improved characterization of soil physical and hydraulic properties. They include both field and laboratory experiments as well as modelling studies. Different spatial scales, i.e., from field to regional scales, and a wide range of geographic regions are also covered. The collection of these manuscripts presented in this Special Issue provides a relevant knowledge contribution for effective saving water resources and sustainable land management.
