Book excerpt: Seed germination during unhospitable environmental conditions can be a major barrier to direct seeding efforts in dryland systems. In the sagebrush steppe, Artemisia tridentata Nutt. ssp. Wyomingensis and Artemisia arbuscula are important shrub species that are being used in restoration, but seeding success is highly sporadic due to inter-annual and intra-seasonal weather variability. Altering and expanding the period of germination, as a form of bet-hedging, may improve plant establishment. Our objective was to determine if we could expand the period of germination using plant growth regulators (PGRs) applied in a conglomerated seed coating treatment. In a laboratory study, the seed was either left untreated, conglomerated separately with two concentrations of a germination inhibitor, abscisic acid (ABA), or with two different germination promoters, gibberellic acid (GA3) and 1-Aminocyclopropane carboxylic acid (ACC), a precursor to ethylene. Seeds were incubated in a loam soil at five constant temperatures (5-25 °C) for approximately three months. Results indicate that seed treatments with PGRs can delay or speed germination. The greatest response to the seed treatments was observed at 5 °C. For example, at this temperature PGRs delayed the time for 25% of the seeds to germinate by a maximum of 35 and 21 d and decreased this time by 5 and 25 d for A. t. ssp. Wyomingensis and A. arbuscula, respectively. Field studies are needed to determine if the bet-hedging strategy developed in this study will increase the likelihood that some seeds will germinate during periods that are more favorable for plant establishment.

The degradation of sagebrush steppe rangelands has resulted in the listing of more than 350 animals and plants as species of conservation concern. In addition, there has been a decrease in recreational values, reduced forage production, degraded water resources, and an increase in fire frequency. In the sagebrush steppe, success rates for seeding sagebrush after wildfire are notoriously low. Not only are sagebrush seeds hard to sow due to their small size and associated flower parts, but seedlings are exposed to numerous stresses that lowers their survivability. To improve sowing efficiency and reduce the associated stresses to seedling development we use seed enhancement technologies. In Chapter 1, we explain how a rotary seed coater can be used to agglomerate and apply enhancements to Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata spp. wyomingensis) seed. Using a mix of compost and clay we used a rotary seed coater to create small uniform agglomerates that allowed for enhancements to be applied to the seed. Our study demonstrated that agglomerates have no negative effects on seed germination and increased the overall flow of seed. In Chapter 2, we analyzed the addition of the plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) in seed coatings. This hormone may delay seed germination and allow seedlings to avoid mortality due to over-winter freezing. We determined effects of different concentrations of ABA on total germination and timing of germination. Using a wet-thermal accumulation model, we estimated germination timing of seeds using soil temperature and water potential data for six different sites in the Great Basin. These models illustrate the variation in germination timing across the Great Basin. From our results we proposed the idea of using ABA to create a bet- hedging strategy in seed mixes to increase the probability that some seeds would germinate when conditions are favorable for seedling success.

A primary example of this is in the Great Basin of the United States, where invasive annual grasses, like cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum L.) and medusahead (Taeniatherum caput-medusae L. Nevski), are dominating many sagebrush-steppe ecosystems. In these invaded areas, restoration is fundamental to recovering plant community structure and function of once productive and diverse systems. Seeding is a management practice that accelerates revegetation of perennial plants in annual grass invaded ecosystems. However, seeding generally produces poor establishment and patchy plant communities that are quickly replaced by invaders. Identifying and overcoming the processes limiting desirable plant recovery should increase restoration success in annual grass invaded ecosystems. Seed dispersal dynamics, including propagule pressure and priority effects, strongly influence plant establishment and community assembly, especially during invasion and restoration because they can control recruitment of newly arriving species by influencing safe site occupation. The overall objective of this research was to identify the role of propagule pressure and priority effects on seedling emergence, plant life history, and plant community assembly. My study involved three experiments that were evaluated on seeded annual grass invaded sagebrush-steppe ecosystems in eastern Oregon. First, in order to identify the role of propagule pressure, or number of viable seeds in the seed bank, and annual grass dispersal timing, I conducted a factorially arranged experiment that tested the priority effects of seeding annual grasses in autumn or spring, adding water, and varying annual and perennial grass propagule pressure by seeding 150, 1,500, 2,500, or 3,500 seeds m−2. My results suggested that providing perennial grasses a priority seeding effect by delaying annual grass seeding until spring initially facilitated perennial grass density; however, this effect did not persist into the second-year following seeding. In addition, when annual grass propagule pressure exceeded 150 seeds m−2, an ecological threshold was crossed which limited perennial grass recruitment regardless of perennial grass seeding rate. When water availability was high, perennial grass establishment was high because safe site availability increased, but perennial grass establishment depended on annual grass propagule pressure. These results demonstrated that restoring perennial grasses to annual grass invaded ecosystems may be possible when perennial grass seeding rates and water availability are high. However, if annual grass propagule pressure exceeds 150 seeds m−2, an ecological threshold occurs, where, perennial grass recruitment will be limited regardless of seeding strategy. A second factorial experiment was designed to identify the priority effects of perennial grass seeding time and frequency, annual and perennial grass propagule pressure, and water availability on seedling emergence and annual and perennial grass density and biomass two-years following seeding. In this experiment, my results indicated that seeding perennial grasses seasonally split between the autumn and spring produced higher perennial grass density and biomass compared to seeding perennial grasses exclusively in either period. In addition, results supported my hypothesis that perennial grass density and biomass in seasonally split applications would be higher where perennial propagule pressure was high and annual grass propagule pressure was low. However, I found that there was a threshold between 150-1,500 annual grass seeds m−2, where regardless of perennial grass seeding strategies, perennial grass density and biomass was low. When water was added, annual and perennial grass density was higher than in plots without additional water, suggesting that higher water availability facilitates the growth of all seeded species. Collectively, these results suggested that modifying perennial grass seeding times and frequency increased perennial grass recruitment to annual grass invaded ecosystems, but only if annual grass propagule pressure was below 1,500 annual grass seeds m−2. Third, a life history approach was used to identify and quantify the effect of ecological processes on plant population demography when annual grass seeding times varied (autumn or spring), annual and perennial grass propagule pressure was modified by 150, 1,500, 2,500, or 3,500 seeds m−2, and watering occurred (ambient or water added treatments). In this study, we found that all species had low emergence rates, even though seedling germination was relatively high. Based on prior research, this suggests that freeze-thaw cycles, pathogen attack, and soil crusts may strongly inhibit plant growth from the germination to emergence growth stages. Alternatively, my finding that perennial grass germination rates were higher when they were seeded with annual grasses in autumn compared to delaying annual grass seeding until spring suggests that perennial grass germination is facilitated by neighboring annual grasses during this life history stage. Following seedling emergence, my data indicated that adding water enhances the establishment and growth of all species and that providing perennial grasses a priority seeding effect by delaying annual grass seeding until spring yields higher perennial grass density. However, delaying annual grass seeding until spring only provided perennial grasses a priority effect when annual grass propagule pressure was high. When annual grass propagule pressure was low, seeding perennial grasses in autumn yielded the highest perennial grass density through their life history suggesting low numbers of neighboring annual grasses facilitates the density of perennial grasses. By the second growing season, annual grass density was two-times higher than initial annual grass seeding rates and over four-times higher than perennial grass density, suggesting that annual grass interference may increase during the second growing season. Plant community assembly of restored shrub-steppe ecosystems degraded by annual grasses will likely be determined by the establishment of seeded species in the first growing season. Because perennial grasses are facilitated by annual grasses in the germination stage, and by small numbers of neighboring annual grasses in later growth stages, if perennial grasses establish in areas with low annual grass propagule pressure in the first growing season, they will likely persist to become adults. Alternatively, high annual grass propagule pressure limits perennial grass recruitment regardless of seeding strategy because of their preemptive occupation of safe sites and soil resources and high density by the second growing season.

The plant growth regulators are known to influence growth attributes right from seed germination to senescence either by reducing the plant height or by enhancing the growth, flowering, pod and seed development and ultimately yield. From the present investigation it is evident that application of NAA @ 20 ppm at flower initiation stage was significantly superior and was more effective in increasing the yield.

Book excerpt: "The loss of big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) throughout the Great Basin Desert has motivated efforts to restore it because of fire and other disturbance effects on sagebrush-dependent wildlife and ecosystem function. Initial establishment is the first challenge to restoration, and appropriateness of seeds, climate, and weather variability are factors that may explain success or difficulties in big sagebrush restoration efforts. This project provided several ways of assessing climate responses of big sagebrush seedlings during the critical establishment phase post-fire. We evaluated eleven different seed sources of big sagebrush from all three subspecies, dissimilar climates-of-origin, and different ploidy levels to assess how subspecies, cytotype, and climate-of-origin affect initial establishment of sagebrush in a common garden study. We assessed ecophysiological-climate adaptation as it relates to seedling performance using a suite of dependent variables, including: survival, growth, water balance, photosynthesis, and threshold freezing responses. Results indicate the importance of minimum temperatures to seedling establishment, and reveal a gradient of physiological responses to freezing that inform big sagebrush adaptation and functional diversity. We then used in-situ experimental warming to isolate minimum temperatures, and test the effects of warming on seedling physiological performance for the three dominant subspecies of big sagebrush: A.t. tridentata, A.t. vaseyana, and A.t. wyomingensis. Experimental warming further supported our minimum temperature hypothesis, indicating that warming may alter seedling freezing response thereby affect growth and survival. In a third experiment, we evaluated how initial establishment of big sagebrush is influenced by management treatments on the herb layer, as post-fire rehabilitation frequently involves alterations of the plant community and soil. Results suggest that drill seeding combined with land management treatments that cause disturbance of the herb layer and soil surface may negatively affect sagebrush during the establishment phase. Also, seedlings from local seed or faster-growing populations had greater survival than seedlings from climates that differed from the experimental site. In summary, we provide experimental evidence for the importance of minimum temperatures and seed sources to big sagebrush ecology and management of sagebrush systems. As the climate warms, selection for population-specific freezing resistance mechanisms may alter subspecies distributions. Our data indicated that warming could increase relative abundance of A.t. tridentata compared to A.t. wyomingensis at our Birds of Prey National Conservation Areas study site on the lower Snake River plain. The underlying mechanism for this is greater stress overcome by changes in resource allocation from freezing protection to growth, as well as an extraction of deeper soil water resources in A.t. tridentata. Mortality of A.t. vaseyana appeared to relate to drought stress and greater vulnerability to minimum temperature exposure. Understanding differences in big sagebrush populations' ability to compete with different types and abundances of herbs as well as variation in freezing resistance mechanisms will contribute to appropriate seed selection for particular restoration sites. Book excerpt: Reestablishing Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis) following a wildfire has proven difficult in many areas of the western United States and created the need to implement new restoration strategies. This project tests various methods that can be implemented to improve growth and survival rates for transplanted seedlings as well as the use of high seeding rates in hopes of improving the success of revegetation efforts. Chapter 1 is a synthesis of previous research conducted and provides background information for the subsequent sections. Chapter 2 walks through the process of producing sagebrush seedlings. From seed collection, cleaning and germination to greenhouse growth procedures and planting methods it describes the steps from start to finish. Chapter 3 is an analysis of the main scientific experiment and aims to determine which planting method results in the highest overall survival and production rate for outplanted seedlings. Data yielded from this study can be used to establish Best Management Practices (BMPs) for transplanting big sagebrush in eastern Wyoming rangelands heavily dominated by perennial grasses. The fourth chapter is a concise summary of the results from a small scale broadcast seeding experiment implemented on the site; incorporating high seeding rates and the use of snow fencing. And lastly, to show the feasibility and cost of transplanting Wyoming big sagebrush at a landscape level Chapter 5 summarizes the labor, materials and resources needed. Chapter 5 can be used by land managers, private landowners and restoration practitioners to estimate the amount of material and labor needed in order to trend a large area back to suitable sage-grouse habitat.
