Various re-entry conditions are studied using aerodynamic lift for deceleration and range control. Particular attention is given to cases where re-entry velocity is equal to escape velocity. The report shows that for non-lifting trajectories with re-entry velocity of 11,000 m/s (approximately escape velocity) only 0.4 degree variation in re-entry path angle is allowable if peak deceleration is to be held less than 10 g's. Range from re-entry to impact is shown to be variable up to 10,000 km for re-entry with escape velocity. (Author).

Book excerpt: Entry corridors for manned vehicles returning from the moon are defined consistent with requirements for avoiding radiation exposure and for limiting values of peak deceleration. It was found that the use of lift increases the depth of the entry corridor and, hence, reduces guidance accuracy requirements. Mid-course guidance requirements appear to be critical only for the flight-path angle. Increasing the energy of the transfer orbit increases the required guidance for the flight-path angle. To correct a trajectory for an error in target perigee point, it was found that application of the corrective thrust essentially parallel to the local horizontal produces the maximum change in perigee altitude for a given increment of velocity. It was also found that the energy required to effect a given change in perigee altitude is not strongly dependent on the energy of the orbit, but it was found to vary inversely with range measured from the center of the earth. For this reason, it is important to detect and correct any errors in approach trajectory at the largest possible distance from the earth.

Book excerpt: Aerodynamic lift is used during re-entry to provide range maneuverability so that a precise site can be selected and a horizontal landing capability can be provided. Maximum maneuverability may be achieved by modulating the hypersonic lift-to drag ratio (L/D). In this study the lifting re entry configuration was optimized to maximize hypersonic L/D within the heating, stability, and landing constraints. Eleven pertinent constraint equations were formulated, and numerical calcula tions of the complete aerodynamic characteristics and configurational geometry were determined. The IBM 7090 computer was used to solve the 11 constraint equations through an iteration tech nique and to perform the maximization process. Optimum configurational geometries were evaluated for three wing loadings at vehicle weights of 10,000 and 100,000 pounds. Results show that higher L/D values can be achieved with low aspect ratio, low wing loadings, and large scale vehi cles. The complete geometry for one of the typical optimums is shown as an example.

Results are presented of a number of trajectory studies which describe the operation of the control system and illustrate its ability to control the vehicle trajectory to the desired landing area.

Book excerpt: Entry trajectories for vehicles without and with lift are investigated. The existence and the significance of the second peak deceleration in reentry trajectories are presented. The second peak may be greater than the first one. For a given entry velocity, the first peak deceleration can be a discontinuous function of entry angle. With proper lift modulation of the body-type vehicle, i.e. by changing the angle of attack of the vehicle, the range of the entry angle for non-skip trajectories can be increased significantly, while the first peak deceleration remains less than 5 times the gravitational acceleration. A constant elevation maneuver is presented and its effectiveness in reducing the second peak deceleration is explained. This maneuver, followed by a constant lift modulation, permits the control of the point of landing over a wide range. The practical application of the rate of change of deceleration in deciding the proper lift modulation is demonstrated. (Author).
