Book excerpt: The provision of affordable water supply and sanitation services to all population groups--rich and poor--in urban areas requires the use of a variety of technologies, supported by information and education activities. Experience has shown that beneficiaries, in particular those living in areas with few or none of the customary municipal services, need to understand the purpose, the cost and the operation of the proposed improvement if they are to enjoy the intended health and economic benefits. As a consequence, the user community must participate in the project preparation and technology selection process, and the designer must know and fully understand existing conditions and user attitudes. The planning of the sanitation component of the Jakarta Sewerage and Sanitation Project required such user participation and background information. Project authorities therefore developed a process of data collection, community consultation and statistical analysis which led to recommendations for user affordable and acceptable sanitation improvements. This process, including design of questionnaires, investigator training and computer analysis of data is described in this document in a form that will permit other project planners to utilize the process.

Book excerpt: This is an odd book. An extensive and sometimes annotated bibliography, it is not a book in the sense of a narrative. However, if treated as a book in the traditional sense it leads the reader through a broad spectrum of feelings of amazement, curiosity and desire: amazement about the sheer volume, richness and detail of theliterature on Batavia/Jakarta; curiosity about the contents of certain publications or series of publications with attractive titles; and a feeling of desire immediately to begin an investigation into one of the appealing subjects stumbled upon while leafing through. The bibliography contains over 5000 titles classified into 42 broad subject categories. The vast majority of the publications consists of books, but the number of articles is also very substantial. Most of these titles (3500) were produced after 1950. The larger part of the publications are written in Indonesian, Dutch, and to a lesser extent English. But also publications in such languages as French, Chinese, German, Japanese, Russian, and many others were listed. Indexes of authors, of subjects and of titles make this bibliography easily accessible.

This book was released on 2010-08-17 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 2.6 billion people in the developing world lack access to safe water and sanitation service. The Millennium Development Goal’s (MDG) target is to halve the number of people without access to a sustainable source of water supply and connection to a sewer network by 2015. That target is unlikely to be met. If there is anything that can be learnt from European experience it is that institutional reform occurs incrementally when politically enfranchised urban populations perceive a threat to their material well-being due to contamination of water sources.
