Book excerpt: 1050 lbs of uranium were treated in the pilot plant. 4 runs were conducted; the maximum throughput was approximately 7 1/2 lbs U/hr at 90 degrees C, which was only 50 per cent of the design capacity. This capacity was based on the results of small scale tests in a glass column. It is probable that short circuiting in the pilot plant reactor resulted in decreased throughput capacity. The sodium uranous fluoride produced contained approximately twice as much NaF as is indicated by the formula UF4.NaF. Both chemical and X-ray diffraction analysis showed the product to consist mainly of 2NaF.UF4. This material, containing only 59 to 60 per cent U, was unsuitable for calciothermic reduction to uranium metal. Undesirable endothermic reactions, thought to be caused by the excessive amount of sodium fluoride present, led to the formation of sodium metal in large quantities, and also limited the reaction temperature, thus preventing fusion and separation of massive uranium metal.

Book excerpt: Laboratory scale tests were conducted on the conversion of sodium uranous fluoride to calcium uranous fluoride. This reaction was reported to proceed as follows: 2NaUF5 + Ca(NO3)2 --> Ca(UF5)2 + 2NaNO3. When using either Ca(NO3)2 or CaCl2 added to sodium uranous fluoride, several anomalous results were obtained which indicated that the reaction was not as simple as in the above equation. 1) When Ca(NO3)2 was used partial oxidation of the uranous salt took place giving soluble uranyl salts. 2) When CaCl2 was used the uranous salt did not oxidise, but nevertheless a significant quantity of uranium appeared in solution as the uranous ion. 3) The pH values of the solutions dropped significantly indicating the formation of H+

The successful, large industrial processes, such as chlorine-caustic production, are well known, but the large number of other compounds that have been synthesized electrochemically are much less appreciated, even by electrochemists and inorganic chemists. The last comprehensive book on this subject was published in the 1930's and no modern review or summary of the whole field is in existence. But the field is in no way dormant, as attested by the large number of publications, undiminished throughout the years, describing new syntheses and improvements of old ones. Indeed, it can be expected that practical applications of electrochemical inor ganic syntheses will increase in the future as an increasing portion of our energy will be available in electrical form. Electrochemical processes have important advantages over chemical routes: often the selectivity of the reaction can be better controlled through the use of potential control at the electrode, and the creation of environmen tally harmful waste material can be avoided more easily since one is using the purest reagent - the electron. In addition to development of new synthetic routes, many old ones, which were found to be un economical in the past, are worth reexamining in light of the recent considerable advances in cell design principles, materials of construc tion, and electrode and separator materials, together with our im proved understanding of electrode reactions and electrocatalysis. It is in the hope of accelerating this process that this bibliography is published.

How To Become Supernatural Man, The Universe and Cosmic Mystery is an exploration of the universe and man's place in it. Rodney Collin examines 20th-century scientific discoveries and traditional esoteric teachings and concludes that the driving force behind everything is neither procreation nor survival, but expansion of awareness. Collin sets out to reconcile the considerable contradictions of the rational and imaginative minds and of the ways we see the external world versus our inner selves. For readers familiar with Gurdjieff's cosmology will here find further examinations of the systems outlined in by Ouspensky in Search of the Miraculous.

Book excerpt: Volcanoes are essential elements in the delicate global balance of elemental forces that govern both the dynamic evolution of the Earth and the nature of Life itself. Without volcanic activity, life as we know it would not exist on our planet. Although beautiful to behold, volcanoes are also potentially destructive, and understanding their nature is critical to prevent major loss of life in the future. Richly illustrated with over 300 original color photographs and diagrams the book is written in an informal manner, with minimum use of jargon, and relies heavily on first-person, eye-witness accounts of eruptive activity at both "red" (effusive) and "grey" (explosive) volcanoes to illustrate the full spectrum of volcanic processes and their products. Decades of teaching in university classrooms and fieldwork on active volcanoes throughout the world have provided the authors with unique experiences that they have distilled into a highly readable textbook of lasting value. Questions for Thought, Study, and Discussion, Suggestions for Further Reading, and a comprehensive list of source references make this work a major resource for further study of volcanology. Volcanoes maintains three core foci: Global perspectives explain volcanoes in terms of their tectonic positions on Earth and their roles in earth history Environmental perspectives describe the essential role of volcanism in the moderation of terrestrial climate and atmosphere Humanitarian perspectives discuss the major influences of volcanoes on human societies. This latter is especially important as resource scarcities and environmental issues loom over our world, and as increasing numbers of people are threatened by volcanic hazards Readership Volcanologists, advanced undergraduate, and graduate students in earth science and related degree courses, and volcano enthusiasts worldwide. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ion Exchange Technology serves both as a reference and as a text book for technologists and engineers. While the present book is based mainly on ion exchange as practiced in the United States, the object was to produce a generally useful book which would deal with the fundamental problems, techniques, and operations of ion exchange such as mass transfer, equipment design, properties of ion exchange resins, and deionization. Also include are chapters on two types of applications—those that are used industrially on a large scale, and those which have not yet reached large-scale use but have impressive potentialities. In both the fundamental and applied chapters it was deemed necessary that the successful aspects of ion exchange operation be included. In addition, it was equally important to describe the problems and the inherent complexities encountered in the setting up of an ion exchange process. Wherever possible the economic factors were described realistically.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The technology of the next few decades could possibly allow us to explore with robotic probes the closest stars outside our Solar System, and maybe even observe some of the recently discovered planets circling these stars. This book looks at the reasons for exploring our stellar neighbors and at the technologies we are developing to build space probes that can traverse the enormous distances between the stars. In order to reach the nearest stars, we must first develop a propulsion technology that would take our robotic probes there in a reasonable time. Such propulsion technology has radically different requirements from conventional chemical rockets, because of the enormous distances that must be crossed. Surprisingly, many propulsion schemes for interstellar travel have been suggested and await only practical engineering solutions and the political will to make them a reality. This is a result of the tremendous advances in astrophysics that have been made in recent decades and the perseverance and imagination of tenacious theoretical physicists. This book explores these different propulsion schemes – all based on current physics – and the challenges they present to physicists, engineers, and space exploration entrepreneurs. This book will be helpful to anyone who really wants to understand the principles behind and likely future course of interstellar travel and who wants to recognizes the distinctions between pure fantasy (such as Star Trek’s ‘warp drive’) and methods that are grounded in real physics and offer practical technological solutions for exploring the stars in the decades to come.
