Book excerpt: A new separation criterion for two-dimensional unsteady boundary layers is proposed here. This criterion is derived by analogy, from its counterpart for steady, three-dimensional boundary layer. Analogous limiting streamlines for the unsteady, two-dimensional case are first defined, and an envelope of these streamlines is used to signify unsteady separation. To demonstrate this procedure, two previously studied problems are recalculated here. These are the unsteady responses to (1) a sudden change in velocity in Howarth's problem, and (2) an impulsively-started circular cylinder. Our conclusion regarding separation for the cylinder problem disagrees with that of the Telionis and Tsahalis based on the singularity criterion, but appears to be consistent with the prediction of Proudman and Johnson. Finally, we propose a three-dimensional, unsteady separation criterion on the basis of repeated applications of either the steady, three-dimensional separation criterion at successive times or the unsteady, two-dimensional separation criteion at fixed coordinate planes. Book excerpt: Although unsteady, high-Reynolds number, laminar boundary layers have conventionally been studied in terms of Eulerian coordinates, a Lagrangian approach may have significant analytical and computational advantages. In Lagrangian coordinates the classical boundary layer equations decouple into a momentum equation for the motion parallel to the boundary, and a hyperbolic continuity equation (essentially a conserved Jacobian) for the motion normal to the boundary. The momentum equations, plus the energy equation if the flow is compressible, can be solved independently of the continuity equation. Unsteady separation occurs when the continuity equation becomes singular as a result of touching characteristics, the condition for which can be expressed in terms of the solution of the momentum equations. The solutions to the momentum and energy equations remain regular. Asymptotic structures for a number of unsteady 3-D separating flows follow and depend on the symmetry properties of the flow. In the absence of any symmetry, the singularity structure just prior to separation is found to be quasi 2-D with a displacement thickness in the form of a crescent shaped ridge. Physically the singularities can be understood in terms of the behavior of a fluid element inside the boundary layer which contracts in a direction parallel to the boundary and expands normal to it, thus forcing the fluid above it to be ejected from the boundary layer. Book excerpt: The evolution of unsteady boundary layers on the plane of symmetry of a slender prolate spheroid in uniform motion at constant angle of attack after an impulsive start has been studied for the case of prescribed pressure distribution. Calculated results have been obtained for angles of attack ranging from 30 degrees to 50 degrees and show, for example, that the unsteady-state solutions approach the steady-state solutions rapidly on the windward and leeward sides for alpha and alpha sub c (approximately - 41 degrees). This is also so on the windward side for alpha alpha sub c. On the leeward side for alpha> and alpha sub c, however, the unsteady boundary layer is initially unseparated but develops a region of reversed flow with increasing time. Subsequently, the streamwise displacement thickness develops a pronounced peak which leads to a singularity of the type observed by van Dommelen and Shen on a circular cylinder started impulsively from rest. The authors have earlier indicated numerically that the Goldstein-type separation-singularity appears at the point where the MRS criterion is satisfied. In the present paper and in accordance with the theoretical work of Sears and one of the authors, this idea is extended to unsteady flows. A Goldstein-type of a traveling singularity is discovered and interpreted as 'unsteady boundary-layer separation.' The features of the flow in the neighborhood of this singularity are investigated.
