Book excerpt: Experimental data from jet-engine tests have indicated that unsteady blade row interaction effects can have a significant impact on the performance of multiple-stage turbines. The magnitude of blade row interaction is a function of both blade-count ratio and axial spacing. In the current research program, numerical simulations have been used to quantify the effects of blade count ratio on the performance of an advanced turbine geometries. Dorney, Daniel J. Book excerpt: The blade life estimation is a multifaceted technology, involving free and forced vibration forces, that lead to the determination of steady and dynamic stresses at different critical speeds during the startup and shutdown procedures, as well as in the operational speed range. Propagation and unstable fracture are described with practical examples to estimate blade life.

Book excerpt: This report describes the development of an implicit, viscous method for the solution of the quasi-three-dimensional flow equations for rotor-stator interaction in transonic turbomachinery. The flow algorithm is described, followed by the implicit time-marching scheme, and the one-equation turbulence model. The algorithm is implemented on an unstructured grid arrangement of locally structured micro-blocks called 'patches.' Solution-dependent adaptation is used to refine the grid in regions containing flow features which require enhanced resolution. An overlapped sliding grid interface is used to transfer flow equation information between the respective blade grids. The resulting computational algorithm has been used to perform a number of validation exercises and has been demonstrated on a modern transonic turbine stage. Where possible, these results are compared with experimental data and show the ability of the method to accurately capture the unsteady flow physics in a robust and computationally efficient manner.

Book excerpt: These proceedings include a collection of papers on a range of topics presented at the 12th World Congress on Engineering Asset Management (WCEAM) in Brisbane, 2 – 4 August 2017. Effective strategies are required for managing complex engineering assets such as built environments, infrastructure, plants, equipment, hardware systems and components. Following the release of the ISO 5500x set of standards in 2014, the 12th WCEAM addressed important issues covering all aspects of engineering asset management across various sectors including health. The topics discussed by the congress delegates are grouped into a number of tracks, including strategies for investment and divestment of assets, operations and maintenance of assets, assessment of assets’ health conditions, risk and vulnerability, technologies, and systems for management of assets, standards, education, training and certification.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of a shock wave passing through a blade passage on surface heat transfer to turbine blades were measured experimentally. The experiments were performed in a transonic linear cascade which matched engine Reynolds number, Mach number, and shock strength. Unsteady heat flux measurements were made with Heat Flux Microsensors on both the pressure and suction surfaces of a single blade passage. Unsteady static pressure measurements were made using Kulite pressure transducers on the blade surface and end wails of the cascade. The experiments were conducted in a stationary linear cascade of blades with heated transonic air flow using a shock tube to introduce shock waves into the cascade. A time-resolved model based on conduction in the gas was found to accurately predict heat transfer due to shock heating measured during experimental tests without flow. The model under-predicted the experimental results with flow, however, by a factor of three. The heat transfer increase resulting from shock passing in heated flow averaged over 200 us (typical blade passing period) was found to be a maximum of 60% on the pressure surface near the leading edge. Based on experimental results at different flow temperatures, it was determined that shock heating has the primary effect on heat transfer, while heat transfer increase due to boundary layer disturbance is small.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of the research funded under this grant is to study the unsteady aerodynamic forces and moments induced on cascade blades by a convected density gradient that is more or less normal to the flow path. Previous investigators have considered the effect of a variety of convected disturbances on cascade, compressor, and turbine performance. However, we believe this is the first investigation to focus on the production of unsteady loads associated with this process. The size and frequency content of these loads, when combined with other loads as fan, compressor and turbine blades have the potential to reduce the blade's high cycle fatigue life.

Book excerpt: Twenty-one years have passed since the first symposium in this series was held in Paris (1976). Since then there have been meetings in Lausanne (1980), Cambridge (1984), Aachen (1987), Beijing (1989), Notre Dame (1991) and Fukuoka (1994). During this period a tremendous development in the field of unsteady aerodynamics and aeroelasticity in turbomachines has taken place. As steady-state flow conditions become better known, and as blades in the turbomachine are constantly pushed towards lower weight, and higher load and efficiency, the importance of unsteady phenomena appear more clearly. th The 8 Symposium was, as the previous ones, of high quality. Furthermore, it presented the audience with the latest developments in experimental, numerical and theoretical research. More papers than ever before were submitted to the conference. As the organising committee wanted to preserve the uniqueness of the symposium by having single sessions, and thus mingle speakers and audience with different backgrounds in this interdisciplinary field, only a limited number of papers could be accepted. 54 papers were accepted and presented at the meeting, all of which are included in the present proceedings.

Book excerpt: A numerical analysis has been developed to solve two-dimensional inviscid transonic turbine-type cascade flowfields. This analysis combines accuracy comparable to that of the numerical method of characteristics with the efficiency of finite difference methods. The MacCormack explicit finite difference method is used to solve the unsteady Euler equations. Steady solutions are calculated as asymptotic solutions in time. A conservation variable formulation of the Kentzer method has been developed in this investigation and is used to derive appropriate equations for the flowfield boundaries. The Kentzer method is based on characteristic theory, but uses a finite difference method, consistent with the method used at interior points, to integrate the appropriate boundary equations. A grid generator has been developed to crease C-type grids around cascade blades using techniques similar to the Poisson equation grid generation techniques developed by Steger and Sorensen. Two different planar turbine-type cascades have been studied. The AACE II cascade blades are typical of the nozzle blades found in the first stator in a turbine. The GMA 400 cascade blades are typical of later turbine stator blades. Theses. (mjm).
