Book excerpt: The objective of the research effort is to integrate fluid and heat transfer studies in a heated transonic turbine cascade in order to develop a better understanding of the complex flow physics involved in the coupling of the fluid flow and heat transfer phenomena in an unsteady flowfield. To that end detailed, time resolved aerodynamic and heat transfer measurements are taken in the experiments. Unsteady passing shock is generated in a shock tube and introduced into the test section of the cascade to simulate the shock wave passage similar to an actual turbine environment.

Book excerpt: Unsteady 3-D RANS simulations have been performed on a highly loaded transonic turbine stage and results are compared to steady calculations as well as to experiment. A low Reynolds number k-epsilon turbulence model is employed to provide closure for the RANS system. A phase-lag boundary condition is used in the tangential direction. This allows the unsteady simulation to be performed by using only one blade from each of the two rows. The objective of this work is to study the effect of unsteadiness on rotor heat transfer and to glean any insight into unsteady flow physics. The role of the stator wake passing on the pressure distribution at the leading edge is also studied. The simulated heat transfer and pressure results agreed favorably with experiment. The time-averaged heat transfer predicted by the unsteady simulation is higher than the heat transfer predicted by the steady simulation everywhere except at the leading edge. The shock structure formed due to stator-rotor interaction was analyzed. Heat transfer and pressure at the hub and casing were also studied. Thermal segregation was observed that leads to the heat transfer patterns predicted by steady and unsteady simulations to be different.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of a shock wave passing through a blade passage on surface heat transfer to turbine blades were measured experimentally. The experiments were performed in a transonic linear cascade which matched engine Reynolds number, Mach number, and shock strength. Unsteady heat flux measurements were made with Heat Flux Microsensors on both the pressure and suction surfaces of a single blade passage. Unsteady static pressure measurements were made using Kulite pressure transducers on the blade surface and end wails of the cascade. The experiments were conducted in a stationary linear cascade of blades with heated transonic air flow using a shock tube to introduce shock waves into the cascade. A time-resolved model based on conduction in the gas was found to accurately predict heat transfer due to shock heating measured during experimental tests without flow. The model under-predicted the experimental results with flow, however, by a factor of three. The heat transfer increase resulting from shock passing in heated flow averaged over 200 us (typical blade passing period) was found to be a maximum of 60% on the pressure surface near the leading edge. Based on experimental results at different flow temperatures, it was determined that shock heating has the primary effect on heat transfer, while heat transfer increase due to boundary layer disturbance is small.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental program was performed to study the effects of high strength shocks on the film cooling heat transfer in a transonic turbine blade. Shocks stronger than seen in actual engines were generated by a shock tube and directed to pass into the cascade upstream of a linear set of blades. The results indicate that the increased strength of the shocks do not disrupt the boundary layer on the blade. Therefore, the heat transfer is still predictable by the methods determined for lower strength shocks, as reported in the attached two papers (presented in Munich during this research program). As a transition to work on high free-stream turbulence effects, initial results for a blown grid were obtained in low speed flow. The corresponding report is attached, but has not yet been published.

Book excerpt: The unsteady interaction of shock waves emerging from the trailing edge of modern turbine nozzle guide vanes and impinging on downstream rotor blades is modeled in a linear cascade. The Reynolds number based on blade chord and exit conditions (5 x 10(exp 6) and the exit Mach number (1.2) are representative of modern engine operating conditions. The relative motion of shocks and blades is simulated by sending a shock wave along of stationary shock waves. The blade geometry is a generic version of modern high turning rotor blade with transonic exit conditions. The blade is equipped with a showerhead film cooling scheme.

Book excerpt: This book is a monograph on aerodynamics of aero-engine gas turbines focusing on the new progresses on flow mechanism and design methods in the recent 20 years. Starting with basic principles in aerodynamics and thermodynamics, this book systematically expounds the recent research on mechanisms of flows in axial gas turbines, including high pressure and low pressure turbines, inter-turbine ducts and turbine rear frame ducts, and introduces the classical and innovative numerical evaluation methods in different dimensions. This book also summarizes the latest research achievements in the field of gas turbine aerodynamic design and flow control, and the multidisciplinary conjugate problems involved with gas turbines. This book should be helpful for scientific and technical staffs, college teachers, graduate students, and senior college students, who are involved in research and design of gas turbines.

Book excerpt: Wide bandwidth (100 kHz) heat transfer instrumentation was used to make detailed time resolved measurements on a two dimensional gas turbine rotor cascade blade surface under the influence of simulated unsteady wake and shock passing events. The instrumentation was capable of detecting and tracking naturally occurring transitional turbulent spots confirming the classical model of boundary layer transition. In addition instantaneous large excursions in the surface heat transfer were observed as the simulated wake shock structure from a transonic nozzle guide wave passed over the rotor cascade. The transitional behavior of the blade boundary layer was seen to depend primarily on free stream turbulence and Reynolds number and, away from the direct interaction region, to be relatively unaffected by the wake/shock induced disturbances. Keywords: Gas Turbine Heat Transfer; Unsteady Wake Interactions; Boundary Layer Transition.

Data were obtained for Reynolds numbers based on inlet conditions of 0.5 and 1.0 x 10(exp 6), for isentropic exit Mach numbers of 1.0 and 1.3, and for freestream turbulence intensities of 0.25% and 7.0%. Tests were conducted in a linear cascade at the NASA Lewis Transonic Turbine Blade Cascade Facility. The test article was a turbine rotor with 136 deg of turning and an axial chord of 12.7 cm. The large scale allowed for very detailed measurements of both flow field and surface phenomena. The intent of the work is to provide benchmark quality data for CFD code and model verification. The flow field in the cascade is highly three-dimensional as a result of thick boundary layers at the test section inlet. Endwall heat transfer data were obtained using a steady-state liquid crystal technique.
