Book excerpt: This collection of sermons and theological essays by the beloved Victorian author explore the nature of God’s truth and how it is revealed to us. The Victorian author, poet, and theologian George MacDonald inspired some of the greatest writers of the early 20th century, including C.S. Lewis, who said MacDonald’s books were pivotal in leading him toward Christianity. But while MacDonald’s fiction remains popular—with such notable classics as Robert Falconer and At the Back of the North Wind—his theological nonfiction is often challenging for modern readers. Now MacDonald scholar and biographer Michael Phillips addresses this difficulty with this expertly edited edition of MacDonald’s sermons and essays about God’s truth. Each selection is accompanied by Phillips’s illuminating commentary, providing readers with an essential road map into the expansive world of George MacDonald’s theological writings.

It is not enough for the Christ-follower to hold a set of beliefs about Jesus, to cling tightly to doctrine, or interpretation, or knowledge. The transformative power of the Gospel is accessed through faith in Jesus, through union with God, and through a real experience of His love and nearness. George MacDonald's Unspoken Sermons are a series of written (but never publicly preached) sermons that guide the reader into a deeper relationship with God through profound encounters with Jesus Christ. George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a 19th century Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister, most famous for his published allegorical fairy tales and novels. MacDonald was read and admired by many well-known theologians, including G.K. Chesterton, Oswald Chambers, and C.S. Lewis, who pointed to MacDonald as an inspirer and guide for their own faith and writings. Lewis said of MacDonald, "I know hardly any other writer who seems to be closer, or more continually close, to the Spirit of Christ Himself." Through this collection of remarkable sermons, the reader will discover: A magnificent perspective on Christianity A sincere hunger for spiritual truth A deeper understanding of the Christian faith A clearer sense of God's will The very presence of the Living God The insights available in these pages speak directly to the heart, as a guide towards a deep, intimate, life-changing encounter with the indwelling presence of the living God.

Book excerpt: This book aims to uncover and explore the ideas of notable people in the story of Christian universalism from the time of the Reformation until the end of the nineteenth century. It is a story that is largely unknown in both the church and the academy, and the characters that populate it have for the most part passed into obscurity. With carefully located bore holes drilled to release the long-hidden theologies of key people and texts, the volume seeks to display and historically situate the roots, shapes, and diversity of Christian universalism. Here we discover a diverse and motley crew of mystics and scholars, social prophets and end-time sectarians, evangelicals and liberals, orthodox and heretics, Calvinists and Arminians, Puritans, Pietists, and a host of others. The story crisscrosses Continental Europe, Britain, and America, and its reverberations remain with us to this day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George MacDonald (10 December 1824 - 18 September 1905) was a Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister. He was a pioneering figure in the field of fantasy literature and the mentor of fellow writer Lewis Carroll. His writings have been cited as a major literary influence by many notable authors including W. H. Auden, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Walter de la Mare, E. Nesbit and Madeleine L'Engle. C. S. Lewis wrote that he regarded MacDonald as his "master" "Picking up a copy of Phantastes one day at a train-station bookstall, I began to read. A few hours later," said Lewis, "I knew that I had crossed a great frontier." G. K. Chesterton cited The Princess and the Goblin as a book that had "made a difference to my whole existence." Elizabeth Yates wrote of Sir Gibbie, "It moved me the way books did when, as a child, the great gates of literature began to open and first encounters with noble thoughts and utterances were unspeakably thrilling." Even Mark Twain, who initially disliked MacDonald, became friends with him, and there is some evidence that Twain was influenced by MacDonald. Christian author Oswald Chambers (1874-1917) wrote in Christian Disciplines, vol. 1, (pub. 1934) that "it is a striking indication of the trend and shallowness of the modern reading public that George MacDonald's books have been so neglected." In addition to his fairy tales, MacDonald wrote several works on Christian apologetics including several that defended his view of Christian Universalism. George MacDonald's best-known works are Phantastes, The Princess and the Goblin, At the Back of the North Wind, and Lilith, all fantasy novels, and fairy tales such as "The Light Princess," "The Golden Key," and "The Wise Woman." "I write, not for children," he wrote, "but for the child-like, whether they be of five, or fifty, or seventy-five." MacDonald also published some volumes of sermons, the pulpit not having proved an unreservedly successful venue. MacDonald also served as a mentor to Lewis Carroll (the pen-name of Rev. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson); it was MacDonald's advice, and the enthusiastic reception of Alice by MacDonald's many sons and daughters, that convinced Carroll to submit Alice for publication. Carroll, one of the finest Victorian photographers, also created photographic portraits of several of the MacDonald children. MacDonald was also friends with John Ruskin and served as a go-between in Ruskin's long courtship with Rose La Touche. MacDonald was acquainted with most of the literary luminaries of the day; a surviving group photograph shows him with Tennyson, Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Trollope, Ruskin, Lewes, and Thackeray. While in America he was a friend of Longfellow and Walt Whitman.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George MacDonald (1824–1905) was writing at a time of Evangelical unease. In a society ravaged by Asiatic cholera, numbed by levels of infant mortality, and fearful of revolution and the toxicity of industry (to name but a few of the many challenges), the ‘gospel’ proclaiming eternal damnation for unbelievers was hardly good news; rather, Christianity was increasingly viewed as the source of bad news and a tool of state oppression. MacDonald agreed: in his view, the church had become a vampire, sucking the blood of her children instead of offering them Eucharistic life. In contrast, like Christ, MacDonald offers us a child. Although at first sight a familiar Romantic incarnation, in MacDonald’s theology ‘the child’ becomes an unlikely icon challenging the vampire’s kingdom and confronting the foundations of much of Western theology. John R. de Jong’s meticulously researched study of MacDonald’s work – especially his ‘realist’ and fantasy novels – in its Victorian context is of more than historical interest. In light of the growth of fundamentalist expressions of Christianity, we are encouraged to consider embracing MacDonald’s radical solution to religious vampirism: becoming children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leading George MacDonald scholar presents a fascinating introduction to the 19th century Scottish author’s views on Christianity, faith, and God. The Victorian author, poet, and theologian George MacDonald inspired some of the greatest writers of the early 20th century, including C.S. Lewis, who said MacDonald’s books were pivotal in leading him toward Christianity. While MacDonald’s beloved fiction—including classics like Robert Falconer and At the Back of the North Wind—remain popular, his sermons and nonfiction writings on faith are less well-known. Now MacDonald scholar and biographer Michael Phillips presents a comprehensive introduction to George MacDonald’s theological ideas. In George MacDonald’s Spiritual Vision, Phillips provides extensive, thematically arranged quotes from the author’s writings. This brief volume covers topics from the nature and character of God to salvation, justice and atonement.
