Book Synopsis The World's 20 Greatest Unsolved Problems by : John R. Vacca
Download or read book The World's 20 Greatest Unsolved Problems written by John R. Vacca and published by Prentice-Hall PTR. This book was released on 2005 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Phebe Hedges, a woman in East Hampton, New York, walked into the sea in 1806, she made visible the historical experience of a family affected by the dreaded disorder of movement, mind, and mood her neighbors called St.Vitus's dance. Doctors later spoke of Huntington’s chorea, and today it is known as Huntington's disease. This book is the first history of Huntington’s in America. Starting with the life of Phebe Hedges, Alice Wexler uses Huntington’s as a lens to explore the changing meanings of heredity, disability, stigma, and medical knowledge among ordinary people as well as scientists and physicians. She addresses these themes through three overlapping stories: the lives of a nineteenth-century family once said to “belong to the disease”; the emergence of Huntington’s chorea as a clinical entity; and the early-twentieth-century transformation of this disorder into a cautionary eugenics tale. In our own era of expanding genetic technologies, this history offers insights into the social contexts of medical and scientific knowledge, as well as the legacy of eugenics in shaping both the knowledge and the lived experience of this disease.

Download or read book Unresolved problems in Haemophilia written by C.D. Forbes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings are of a symposium held jointly by the UK Haemophilia Centre Directors and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. The purpose of the meeting was to highlight the growing areas of haemophilia care and research as they serve as a model for the study of other disorders. In particular a major section of these proceedings is devoted to the investigation of liver disease in haemophili- an area which offers unique opportunities for both basic, applied and clinical research. The second section considers modern treatment of bleeding disorders and the potential cost to society. With the advent of better standards of care, the requirements of plasma products have risen to such an extent that future predictions suggest a worldwide shortage may occur. The third section of the book discusses the detailed structure of the Factor VIII molecule and its sub-compon(!nts and also its functional and immunological characteristics. The availability of amniocentesis and its accuracy in predicting which factor is affected has produced new problems for genetic counselling. The fourth section is clinical and describes the experience of procedures in the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Oxford. For all of us looking after such patients this remains the most important unsolved cI inical problem. C. D. Forbes G. D. O. Special emphasis is paid to the role of international courts and tribunals in the progressive development of the law of the sea as well as the ability of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea to accommodate new uses and challenges, such as new concerns, new technological possibilities, in particular, new contexts and functions of established rules. Book excerpt: When the body of a beautiful young woman is found in the back seat of a new Mercedes on the outskirts of the small central California town of San Timoteo in 1991, Police Chief Paul Thibideaux heads the investigation. Called out of retirement to lead this five-officer police department, Thibideaux is at first stymied by the case. Not only does it take eighteen months to identify the victim, but much of the evidence just doesn’t make sense. The case takes an unusual turn when the dead woman is discovered to be Jennifer Fenland, daughter of Senator H. William Fenland. Jennifer was kidnapped in 1972 and hasn’t been seen since—until her body was left in the Mercedes. Now, Thibideaux must locate evidence from more than twenty years ago. This investigation takes Thibideaux from the world of outlaw bikers to one of the most powerful men in the United States. The police chief relentlessly pursues his quarry while dealing with reluctant prosecutors and interference from the FBI, the Los Angeles Police Department, and a beautiful woman who forces her way into the case. Thibideaux will stop at nothing until he has solved the murder or exhausted every lead.
Book Synopsis In Dialogue with the Mahābhārata by : Brian Black
Download or read book In Dialogue with the Mahābhārata written by Brian Black and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mahābhārata has been explored extensively as a work of mythology, epic poetry, and religious literature, but the text’s philosophical dimensions have largely been under-appreciated by Western scholars. This book explores the philosophical implications of the Mahābhārata by paying attention to the centrality of dialogue, both as the text’s prevailing literary expression and its organising structure. Focusing on five sets of dialogues about controversial moral problems in the central story, this book shows that philosophical deliberation is an integral part of the narrative. Black argues that by paying attention to how characters make arguments and how dialogues unfold, we can better appreciate the Mahābhārata’s philosophical significance and its potential contribution to debates in comparative philosophy today. This is a fresh perspective on the Mahābhārata that will be of great interest to any scholar working in religious studies, Indian/South Asian religions, comparative philosophy, and world literature.
Book Synopsis Driver Behaviour and Accident Research Methodology by : Dr Anders af Wåhlberg
Download or read book Driver Behaviour and Accident Research Methodology written by Dr Anders af Wåhlberg and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses several methodological problems in traffic psychology which are not currently recognized as such. Summarizing and analyzing the available research, it is found that there are a number of commonly made assumptions about the validity of methods that have little backing, and that many basic problems have not been researched at all. Suggestions are made as to further studies that should be made to address some of these problems. The book is primarily intended for traffic/transport researchers, but should also be useful for specialized education at a higher level (doctoral students and transportation specialists) as well as officials who require a good grasp of methodology to be able to evaluate research.
