Christians are engaged in a cosmic war between good and evil, a war waged on many fronts -- in our hearts and minds, in our churches, and in our world. How can we be equipped for the fight? Is God still in control? How did Jesus engage in spiritual warfare? How powerful is Satan, and how can we resist him? With clarity and depth, Scott Moreau answers these questions and more as he maps out a biblical overview of spiritual warfare. He encourages us to put truth into action and to stand firm in our personal battles and against evil in the world.

Book excerpt: A look through a Latinx lens at how the Episcopal/Anglican church can minister to and with the Latinx community Unmasking Latinx Ministry is a unique look at the history of the Episcopal Church in the last fifty years, including a bold and insightful analysis of the institutionalization of Latinx ministries. This history is contextualized within the struggles of the Episcopal Church in terms of race, gender, and sexuality. Through a Latinx lens, the author brings fresh eyes to the challenges faced by the Episcopal Church’s ministry with and among Latinx persons and communities. Along with the historical analysis and insight, the author brings a background and formation in Episcopal churches in Puerto Rico, Texas, California and Central New York, as well as more than fifteen years of experience in a multicultural and multiracial, monolingual and bilingual congregations in New York City. Combining this history and ministry experience, the author explores specific areas where Episcopal/Anglican traditions speak to Latinx ministries and what Latinx persons and communities offer the Episcopal Church today.

Book excerpt: In this introduction to the Zondervan Guide to Cults and Religious Movements, Dr. Gomes defines the characteristics of a "cult of Christianity" and why such a group subverts the search for spiritual truth. He explains the emotional and spiritual appeal of cults, who is susceptible, and the techniques cult leaders use to attract members. This book, in dealing with a wide range of issues relating to cults and religious movements in general, complements the other books in the series, all of which focus on specific religious groups. -- Why this series? This is an age when countless groups and movements, old and new, mark the religious landscape in our culture, leaving many people confused or uncertain in their search for spiritual truth and meaning. Because few people have the time or opportunity to research these movements fully, these books provide essential information and insights for their spiritual journeys. Except for this book, each book in the series has five sections: - A concise introduction to the group - An overview of the group's theology -- in its own words - Tips for witnessing effectively to members of the group - A bibliography with sources for further study - A comparison chart that shows the essential differences between biblical Christianity and the group -- The writers of these volumes are well qualified to present clear and reliable information and help us discern religious truth from falsehood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each chapter in this collection of twenty meditations considers a specific phrase or object related to Jesus' ministry in his final days or in his resurrection appearances. In several cases, this is something intangible yet very distinct, such as Jesus' prayer for his disciples, Pilate's wife's dream, or the astounding news of the resurrection that seemed like an "idle tale." Other messages address objects that could have been seen and touched: the torn curtain in the temple, ropes, scars, or the burial spices the women brought to the empty tomb. But whether tangible or intangible, each symbol reflects a significant event in the biblical narrative, which Sheets explores to see what lessons can be drawn for today's Christian living. This volume is excellent for adult Sunday school classes or other study groups, devotional reading during Lent and Easter, and as background for sermon preparation. A companion book of children's sermons based on the same texts (Alleluia! by Elaine M. Ward) is also available from CSS Publishing Company. Herchel Sheets is a proven quantity. Here he focuses fifty years of disciplined biblical and theological study in a series of skillfully crafted seminal sermons on the passion and resurrection of Christ. His hermeneutic hinges on themes that are definite and precise, such as a jar of ointment, a drug refused. In every instance, he ties the truth to the contemporary with illustrations from literature and life that constitute a cornucopia for teachers and preachers. This volume is a keeper! L. Bevel Jones III, Bishop in Residence Candler School of Theology, Emory University In this volume, Herchel Sheets takes us on a journey as Jesus makes his way to Jerusalem -- from Lent to Resurrection and Eastertide. With his great biblical understanding, fine theological mind, and broad literary knowledge, he brings us rich vignettes of the life and ministry of Jesus. A splendid preacher, teacher, and writer has produced a homiletical gem! James Lloyd Knox United Methodist Bishop (retired) Herchel H. Sheets has been a United Methodist minister for more than a half century. His most recent appointment was as the Assistant to the Bishop and Director of Ministerial Services for the North Georgia Annual Conference. In addition, he has pastored several congregations, and has served as a college and seminary teacher, annual conference program director, and district superintendent. The author of eight previous books and numerous articles in various publications, Dr. Sheets is now an adjunct professor at Emory University's Candler School of Theology, and is in frequent demand as a preacher, teacher, and workshop leader for local churches, conferences, retreats, and training schools.

Book excerpt: "In this original and insightful book, Dorothy Jonaitis offers a refreshing alternative to the popular view of biblical apocalyptic writing as gloom-and-doom, fire-and-brimstone literature. Rather, she presents it as literature of hope and its authors as people who knew how to use their creative imaginations to communicate their hope-filled messages. The reader will come to see the apocalyptic authors of both the Old and the New Testaments as dramatists and will learn to preach, teach, and imagine their writings as dramatic messages to be applied in contemporary times of crisis."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Proposes creative implications of the 500-year Reformation tradition for today As the global church assesses the legacy of the Lutheran Reformation, Alberto García and John Nunes in this book reimagine central Reformational themes from black, Hispanic, and other perspectives traditionally at the margins of catholic-evangelical communities. Focusing on the central theme of justification, García and Nunes delve into three interlinked aspects of the church's life in the world—martyria (witness), diakonia (service), and koinōnia (fellowship). They argue that it is critically important and vitally enriching for the whole church, especially Eurocentric Protestant churches, to learn from the grassroots theological emphases of Christian communities in the emerging world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity and politics cannot and should not be divided. But in times of deep social division, how do Christians make political choices that aim to build a society of justice and peace, where wholeness and unity reign? With special reference to two apparently very different contexts, Brazil and the Czech Republic, this book delves into this question, suggesting that behind a clash of political populisms, there is a deeper theological conflict. Grace, the action of God in the world, is understood by some as material reward for their giving, and thus as an entitlement to goods, financial rewards, or narrow national interests. For others, grace is a gift of God that always goes beyond any attempt to possess it and enables attention to the other, especially the other who is poor, excluded, and oppressed. What this means concretely is discussed through a close reading of Pope Francis’s Fratelli Tutti. Another world is possible, and this book sets out a vision of what it will look like.

Book excerpt: This commentary adopts a literary-rhetorical approach, viewing the letter as an instrument of persuasion designed to transform readers through a celebratory presentation of the Gospel. Reflecting upon the fate of Jews and Gentiles, Paul wins his audience to a vision of a God who always acts inclusively. The God who, in the person of Israel's Messiah (Jesus), has acted faithfully to include the Gentile peoples within the community of salvation, will not fail to see to the eventual inclusion of Israel as well. In the victory of grace displayed already in the risen humanity of Jesus, the original design of the Creator for human communities and for the world begins to come true. The interpretation of Paul's letter to Rome has accompanied and stimulated the path of Christian theology down to today. Romans touches upon virtually all main issues of Christian theology, as well as presenting a rewarding introduction to Paul. Byrne facilitates full access to Paul and his Gospel through the letter, allowing Christians today to hear his voice as intelligibly and powerfully as it has spoken to past generations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steven J. Cole refers to the Apostle Paul's spiritual experience as described in Romans 7:14-20 (KJV) as the merry-go-round of sin. It is an experience that I believe every child of God is subject to as a result of the evil in our world. The crust of it is this: "For the good that I would do I do not: but the evil I would not do, that I do" (Romans 7:19). Without question, we want to get off this merry-go-round of sin, but that is not an easy task, for we are held there by an unseen master-a masked evil whose presence has gripped the whole of our society and the world and placed in it a mind-set that is deprived of understanding, judgment, and perception. Paul, through spiritual discernment, exposed this evil in Ephesians 6:12. He said, "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness in this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." He unmasked the evil in our world, revealing that we are all affected by its presence. Christ has called each of us to recognize this masked evil and expose it to the world that we have been charged to impact positively for him.
