Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of Toronto Studies, Vol. 1: Psychological Series The field of optical contrast is of great extent and includes a considerable variety of distinguishable influences. It will be neces sary to discriminate between them both for the purpose of investi gating the bearing of contrast upon the problem in hand, and in order to define the particular kind of contrast with which we are concerned. Optical contrast has been divided into successive and simultaneous contrast. The former, successive contrast, is identical with the phenomenon of after-images. If one turns away after look ing at a dark surface on a bright ground, one will have a series of alternating positive and negative after-images, in the latter of which the ground will appear dark and the dark surface bright. This inver sion of the relationship between surface and ground in the negative after-image is a case of so-called successive contrast. That part of the object of consciousness which at one moment was bright appears at a subsequent moment dark, and the dark portion appears bright, a fact which seems to indicate that the relationship between the parts of the after-images in respect to brightness is inversely dependent' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book repositions thinking about rhythm, meter and versification during the “Mechanical Age.” Cutting across disciplinary boundaries, the book examines the rhythmical workings of poems alongside not only Victorian theories of prosody and poetics but also contemporary thinking about labor practices, pedagogical procedures, scientific experiments, and technological innovations. By offering an exploded definition of meter—one that extends beyond conventional foot-based scansion—this book explicates the conceptual and, at times, material exchanges between poetic meter and machine culture. The machines of meter include mid-century theories of abstraction and technologies of smoothness and even spacing; a deeply influential, though rarely credited, system of metrical manufacture; verse produced by a Victorian automaton; the mechanics of the human body and mind and the meters that issued from them; and the promise of scientific machines to resolve metrical dilemmas once and for all.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Syllabus of Elementary Lectures in Psychology, Delivered in the University of Toronto 1. All possible objects of human contemplation may be grouped as follows: (a) Material things; (b) Minds; (c) The Divine or Absolute Being. 2. The first group includes all the elements and forces of nature; those things which fall under the cognizance of the senses : and whose investigation is the special business of the physical sciences. These sciences may therefore be called objective or cosmological. 3. The second group includes all intelligence, wherever we find it. By intelligence is meant, that which feels and knows, as distinguished from that which is felt and known. The investigation of intelligence cannot be done directly by the senses, but is the work of consciousness itself. These studies arc therefore subjective or psychological. 4. The third heading stands for that existence upon which all other existence depends. This absolute existence cannot lie known by the senses, nor even by the ordinary intellectual powers, but must be apprehended in a high moral or spiritual intuition. Its study, therefore, is transcendent or ontological. 5. In accordance with this classification, human studies may be grouped, as regards their subject matter, into physical, mental, and theological sciences. 6. Psychology finds its place in this classification as mental science, or the investigation of intelligence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the reader will excuse a brief anecdote from my own intellectual history, I would like to use it as an introduction to this book. In 1957, I was a sophomore at an undergraduate liberal arts college major ing in medieval history. This was the year that we were receiving our first introduction to courses in philosophy, and I took to this study with a passion. In pursuing philosophy, I discovered the area called "philosophical psychology," which was a Thomistic category of inquiry. For me, "philosophical psychology" meant a more intimate study of the soul (psyche), and I immediately concluded that psychology as a discipline must be about this pursuit. This philosophical interest led me to enroll in my first introductory psychology course. Our text for this course was the first edition of Ernest Hilgaard's Introduction to Psychology. My reasons for entering this course were anticipated in the introductory chapter of Hilgaard's book, where the discipline and its boundaries were discussed, and this introduction was to disabuse me of my original intention for enrolling in the course. I was to learn that, in the 20th century, people who called themselves psychologists were no longer interested in perennial philosophical questions about the human psyche or person. In fact, these philosophical questions were considered to be obscurantist and passe. Psychology was now the "scientific" study of human behavior. This definition of psychology by Hilgaard was by no means idiosyncratic to this introductory textbook.
