Book excerpt: This statistical report provides data tables on the University of South Florida System's (USF's) financial resources, personnel, enrollment, undergraduate education, graduate education, and research & economic development. Highlights of USF's achievements in the 2013-2014 academic year include: (1) In Tampa, USF celebrated its strongest freshman class ever, the Class of 2017, with an average GPA of 4.0 and SAT score of 1200; (2) During the 2013-14 academic year, USF in Tampa again broke institutional records with a 63 percent graduation rate; (3) In 2013-14, 51 percent of the USF System's undergraduate degrees were awarded in areas of strategic emphasis, including 21 percent in STEM; In graduate degrees, 69 percent of our degrees were in areas of strategic emphasis, including 27 percent in STEM; (4) One of 40 public research universities nationwide designated as both "very high research activity" and "community engaged" by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, USF is classified in the top tier of research universities, a distinction attained by only 2.3 percent of all universities. USF moved up this year to 43rd in the nation for total research expenditures among all U.S. universities, public or private (#27 among all public universities), and 2nd in Florida, and was awarded a record $467M in research contracts and grants, an increase of nearly $15M; (5) As federal funding has waned, USF has proactively worked to increase funding through private partnerships (3.9 percent increase from last year) and state and local government (13.1 percent increase) and to increase both grant proposals submitted by USF researchers (8 percent increase from last year) and dollars requested (14.3 percent increase)--a strategy that led to record-breaking award dollars in 2013-14; (6) Of USF's total $428M in external research funding in 2014, nearly half came from community partnerships, mostly from private or foundation partners; (7) Service-learning opportunities are now available to students starting with their first year courses and continuing through upper-level and graduate seminars; in 2013-14, 188 service learning course sections were offered at USF, serving 4,013 students; (8) During 2013-14, USF in Tampa completely revamped its Career Services operation--recognizing the important value of increased engagement on both student success and the institution's reputation; and (9) Through a partnership among the USF Tampa College of Business, the USF Sarasota-Manatee College of Business, and the Small Business Development Network, a regional Small Business Development Center (SBDC) opened at the teaching site at USF Sarasota-Manatee at North Port.

This is an increase of 1% over last year's 2009 cohort rate and is a return to 2008's 67% rate; (3) Comparing total strategic emphasis degrees using the new categories, UF shows an increase of 8% in undergraduate programs and 6% in graduate programs over 2012-13 data; (4) To facilitate research computing, including its thrust into Big Data, UF created the HiPerGator supercomputer. The results have exceeded expectations, with well over $300M in research being performed on it; (5) UF received a record $702 million in external grants and contracts in the 2013-14 fiscal year. Book excerpt: This statistical report provides data tables on Florida Gulf Coast University's (FGCU's) financial resources, personnel, enrollment, undergraduate education, graduate education, and research & economic development. Highlighted data include: (1) Recent results (fall 2013) of FGCU's participation in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) showed that 75% of graduating seniors had experienced at least two of the following high-impact educational experiences (those deemed to result in long-term student success) while pursuing their degrees: participating in a learning community, service-learning, research with faculty, an internship or field experience, study abroad, or a culminating senior experience. This rate of FGCU student participation is statistically significantly higher than FGCU's national peers (i.e., comprehensive universities); (2) Despite a drop in graduate enrollment being experienced nationally and affecting graduate enrollment at FGCU, total degree production during 2013-2014 FGCU was essentially unchanged from the prior year. However, there was a dramatic increase in the undergraduate six-year graduation rate of 6 percentage points from 43% for the 2007 entering student cohort to 49% for the cohort entering in 2008; (3) During 2013-14, degrees awarded in STEM fields or other programs of strategic emphasis (as defined by the Board of Governors) constituted 45% of all degrees awarded. Over the last five years FGCU has exhibited among the highest rates of growth in degree production among the major institutions in the system; (4) Recent National Survey of Student Engagement results (2013-14) indicate that FGCU students have experienced research with a faculty member at statistically significantly higher rates than their peers nationally; (5) According to the Florida Education Training and Placement Information Program, FGCU consistently places among the top institutions in the state university system (SUS) for post-graduation employment and/or continuing education in Florida; and (6) 2013-14 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) results showed FGCU students in their senior year reported having had an internship experience while completing their degrees at rates statistically significantly higher than their peers nationally.

Book excerpt: Miami-Dade County voters sent a strong message on November 4, 2014, in a rare (as per public university practices) referendum on their public university's role in their community. The voters made it clear that they want Florida International University (FIU) to expand--to provide more and better educational opportunities for their community, by a near landslide vote of 65 percent in favor. The 2013-14 year marked a significant milestone for this work--as all of the university's efforts culminated and coalesced in working with their community partners and the Miami-Dade Commission. This positive vote caps a five-year strategic plan that pivoted around inserting FIU into the greater Miami community through an expansion of access to eligible qualified students; new win-win partnerships with high profile community institutions; and a solutions-center approach to significant problems in the community associated with K-12 student achievement, health, transportation, environment, and global affairs. This statistical report provides data tables on FIU's financial resources, personnel, enrollment, undergraduate education, graduate education, and research & economic development.

Book excerpt: The State University System (SUS) of Florida is committed to excellence in teaching, research and public service--the traditional mission of universities. This is achieved through a coordinated system of institutions, each having a distinct mission and each dedicated to meeting the needs of a diverse state and nation. This past year, the System has experienced myriad accomplishments and has identified a number of opportunities for improvement: (1) At the System level, five of the eight Performance-Based Funding (PBF) metrics, that are common to all universities, show improvement over last year's data; (2) The State University System of Florida six-year graduation rate is ranked 1st compared to the ten largest states (for public four-year universities); (3) The State University System of Florida produces more degrees in Business and Health Professions at both the bachelor's and graduate levels than any other discipline; (4) STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) degree production increased more than non-STEM degree production during the past four years for both baccalaureate degrees and graduate degrees; (5) The State University System of Florida is one of the most active public university engines for R&D in the country, expending $1.88 Billion dollars in FY2013-14; (6) The State University System of Florida ranked 2nd in the Nation in the total number of students who took at least one Distance Learning course; (7) Universities terminated 16 degree programs during the 2014-15 academic year. In addition, some other new programs that were identified on the University Work Plans as being considered for implementation in AY2014-15 have not been implemented as a result of a robust and ongoing review process by the Council of Academic Vice Presidents. Following the System Dashboard, and a Section on Performance Based Funding Metrics, the table of contents presents detailed statistical information provided in a tabular format on the following subjects: (1) Enrollment; (2) Degree Productivity and Program Efficiency; (3) Scholarship, Research and Innovation; (4) Community and Business Engagement; and (5) Fiscal Summary. The five year data tables are listed in the appendix of this report, however they are provided in a separate document. [To access the five year data tables in ERIC see ED572259.
