Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of Kansas Publications, Museum of Natural History, 1946-1950, Vol. 1: 1946-1950 The history of pocket gophers of Utah begins with J. A. Allen's mention in 1874 of mounds of these animals. For them he employed the name "Thomomys rufescens?" (1874:65). Actual specimens were reported upon a year later by Elliot Coues (1875:251, 256), who used the name Thomomys talpoides for specimens from "Utah" but later in the same paper listed specimens from Provo as Thomomys talpoides bulbivorus. Even as the great variation in Utah pocket gophers has been perplexing to modern workers, so it was also to Coues seventy years ago who left the problem with the statement that animals from Provo "exhibit among themselves such variations that their labelling becomes a matter of indifference"! In the same year in another report, Coues and Yarrow (1875:112) used the name Thomomys talpoides umbrinus for animals from Provo. In 1877, Coues again referred these same animals to Thomomys talpoides bidbivorus, using the name umbrinus for the animals of only southern Utah (Coues, 1877:627, 628). The two names Thomomys bottae and Thomomys talpoides, now applicable to gophers in Utah, were synonomized under the name Thomomys talpoides bidbivorus by Coues (1875:256; 1877:627). After this beginning only three other papers, all by J. A. Allen, appeared in the next twenty years. They were reports on collections of mammals made by Walter W. Granger and Charles P. Rowley. One of these contained the description of Thomomys aureus. Likewise, in the ensuing twenty years there were only three papers, one in 1901 by C. Hart Merriam in which he described Thomomys uinta, one by Allen(1905:119), and Vernon Bailey's (1915) "Revision of the pocket gophers of the genus Thomomys" in which he summarized the information then available on these animals within the state. Barnes(1922 and 1927) reprinted the information summarized by Bailey. Since 1927 approximately twenty-five papers, mostly taxonomic, have been published in which reference is made to Utah gophers, and especially since 1930 much information has been accumulated about the distribution and speciation of this genus within the state. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of Kansas Publications, Museum of Natural History, Vol. 10: 1956-1960 Considerable interest has been occasioned in recent years in the eastern United States by large-scale accidents to night-migrating birds. Most accidents have occurred in the autumn. The wide spread adoption by airports of an instrument called the ceilometer, which measures the height of cloud ceilings by reflecting from them a high-powered beam of light, has proved under certain conditions to be catastrophic to night-flying birds. Among the recent reports of such accidents are those of Spofford (1949) and Laskey (1951) for Nashville, Tennessee, Howell and Tanner 1951) for Knoxville, Tennessee, and Lovell (1952) for Louisville, Kentucky. Recently Howell, Laskey, and Tanner (1954) reviewed ceilometer tragedies without being able to determine the exact reason for their lethal effectiveness. Less publicized so far have been mass collisions of birds with another class of Obstacles, tall radio and television towers. These slender towers, usually 500 to 1000 feet tall, are increasing rapidly in numbers and there is reason to suppose that they will take a correspondingly larger toll of bird life. Notice has long been given by ornithologists to mass destruction of birds by more conventional solid Obstructions to passage, and newspapers occasionally mention birds killed at such well-known points as the Washington Monument and the Empire State Build Ing. Seventy-five years ago, J. A. Allen (1880) published the results of questionnaires circulated by William Brewster to lighthouse keepers. Brewster himself (1886) described destruction of birds at a lighthouse in the Bay of Fundy, paying keen attention to be havior of the birds and the exact conditions under which nocturnal flight and accidents occurred. The subject also received attention in several countries across the Atlantic. Destruction of birds at Irish lighthouses was carefully noted over a period of years and the results were published periodically, culminating in R. M. In many cases I used museum specimens that had not been collected expressly for studies in geographic variation. It was therefore necessary to lump various localities together in order to obtain reasonable sample sizes. In many cases sample sizes are still relatively small, but I con sidered it to be of greater value to include information based on a few speci mens than to have no information at all for certain sites. A total of 54 samples, or localities, is used for most characters in males. And, since in Red-winged Blackbirds there have been fewer females collected than males, only 48 local ities could be used for most characters in females. A total of male and 679 female specimens have been used in the final analysis. In much of the discussion that follows, and in various illustrations, localities are referred to by number. The locality numbers, geographic details of each sample, and number of specimens per locality are given in Table 1 (see also Fig. About 600 specimens were collected by Mr. W. M. Good between 1949 and 1951 for the purpose of a study of geographic variation. About 320 speci mens were collected by me during the summer of 1966. These specimens, among others used, are housed at the University of Kansas. The remaining specimens were taken in various years by many different collectors and are now housed in several museums in the U. S. And Canada (see Acknowledgments section). Many were SO high that they were difficult to see in the poor light; others foraged lower, less than 50 feet above the ground, and individuals occasionally swooped within 10 feet of us. The ight was erratic and fairly swift. In order to see the bats better, we adjusted two of the ood lights that illuminated the working areas at the rig so that the beams were cast almost directly upward. As if to avoid these lights, some bats left the immediate area and those that remained ew even higher than before; few came within range of our specially loaded shells. Thereupon, Richard Raines, one of the workers at the rig, climbed to a 98-foot-high platform on the derrick from where he shot five bats in about half an hour. According to Raines, some bats were ying at about the level of the platform but others ew as high as, or higher than, the 142 foot tower of the rig.
