Library Journal, Starred Review Copyright situations in libraries can get complicated. How do librarians know how much they can copy? Is everything in libraries fair use? Can librarians let people show movies in the library? Do new services like 3D printing involve copyright? Should librarians always say ‘no’ when patrons want to copy something? Finding the answers can be time-consuming, but with copyright policies and workflows in place, those answers are at the fingertips of librarians. Knowing how to create and implement copyright policies will make it much easier to address the copyright situations that come up in your library. Librarians and those who work in libraries can use this book to get good information and practical advice on both copyright basics and policies. The book is different from other books about copyright in libraries because it focuses on more than the rules of copyright. It goes further by guiding librarians and information professionals on how to incorporate the rules into policies, procedures, and workflows. With this book, librarians and information professionals will be able to craft a copyright policy that will enable them to answer complicated copyright questions quickly and easily. The book includes sample policies from all types of libraries: academic, public, government, and private. The book covers how to implement a policy and ways to assess its effectiveness. Book excerpt: The recent lawsuit against Kinko's Copies for copyright infringement has exposed the confusion and heightened the fear of liability surrounding copyright issues in colleges and universities. This volume offers an enlightening explanation of copyright and the ambiguous concept of fair use as they affect and are affected by higher education. In the first large-scale study of its kind, Kenneth D. Crews surveys the copyright policies of ninety-eight American research universities. His analysis reveals a variety of ways in which universities have responded to—and how they could better manage—the conflicting goals of copyright policies: avoiding infringements while promoting lawful uses that serve teaching and research. He explains in detail the background of copyright law and congressional guidelines affecting familiar uses of photocopies, videotapes, software, and reserve rooms. Crews concludes that most universities are overly conservative in their interpretation of copyright and often neglect their own interests, adding unnecessary costs and obstacles to the lawful dissemination of information. Copyright, Fair Use, and the Challenge for Universities provides administrators, instructors, lawyers, librarians, and educational leaders a much-needed exegesis of copyright and how it can better serve higher education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information is a critical resource for personal, economic and social development. Libraries and archives are the primary access point to information for individuals and communities with much of the information protected by copyright or licence terms. In this complex legal environment, librarians and information professionals operate at the fulcrum of copyright’s balance, ensuring understanding of and compliance with copyright legislation and enabling access to knowledge in the pursuit of research, education and innovation. This book, produced on behalf of the IFLA Copyright and other Legal Matters (CLM) Advisory Committee, provides basic and advanced information about copyright, outlines limitations and exceptions, discusses communicating with users and highlights emerging copyright issues. The chapters note the significance of the topic; describe salient points of the law and legal concepts; present selected comparisons of approaches around the world; highlight opportunities for reform and advocacy; and help libraries and librarians find their way through the copyright maze.

Book excerpt: As more and more colleges and universities establish copyright offices and/or assign the responsibilities of copyright education and advisory services to specific individuals within the institution, many times librarians, there is a paucity of resources available on how to manage that responsibility. Most works on copyright discuss the law and court cases interpreting the law but few address the situational application of it and the management and coordination of copyright efforts on a campus. Here is a complete, one-stop, guide to managing copyright at all levels—community college, college, and university. Complete chapters are devoted to: The university culture The role of a copyright office How to establish a copyright office Copyright services for librarians Copyright services for faculty Copyright services for administrators and staff Copyright services for students Written by the director of the University Copyright Office at Purdue University who holds both law and library science degrees, this is complete, authoritative guide is a must-purchase for every institution of higher education seeking to comply with the copyright law and thus avoid potential liability exposure.
