Book excerpt: Excerpt from Universalism, the Prevailing Doctrine of the Christian Church During Its First Five Hundred Years: With Authorities and Extracts The purpose of this book is to present some of the evi dence of the prevalence in the early centuries of the Chris tian church, of the doctrine of the final holiness of all man kind. The author has endeavored to give the language of the early Christians, rather than to paraphrase their words, or state their sentiments in his own language. He has also somewhat copiously quoted the statements of modern schol ars, historians and critics, of all shades of Opinion, instead of condensing them with his own pen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern History of Universalism: From the Era of the Reformation to the Present Time The event of the Reformation is connected with the History of Universalism, inasmuch as it was the means of setting the human mind at liberty, of en couraging the love of truth and free inquiry, and thereby of bringing many to believe in the eventual salvation of the whole world. It taught men that they possessed the right of private judgment, and exhorted them most earnestly to exercise it. It pointed out the fallibility of the Pope and the Cath olic Church, exposed their errors and contradictions, and thereby destroyed, in many minds, the rever ence which had been long entertained for their de cisions. It gave to the people the Bible, which, by authority, they had been forbidden to use and having translated it into the vernacular tongues of many nations, it urged them to study it in consid eration of their duty, their happiness, and their sal vation. These advantages and this advice, sec onded by the desires and the rising zeal of the peo ple, gave a new face to religion in Europe. With the authority of the Catholic Church the Reform ers renounced many of her doctrinal errors. New communities of Christians arose, distinct from her in their doctrine and discipline. Book excerpt: An updated edition of the classic introduction to the history and beliefs of Unitarian Universalism—from a senior minister of the Unitarian Church For those contemplating religious choices, Unitarian Universalism offers an appealing alternative to religious denominations that stress theological creeds over individual conviction and belief. Featuring two new chapters, a revealing and entertaining foreword by best-selling author Robert Fulghum, and a new preface by UU moderator Denise Davidoff, this updated edition of the classic introductory text on Unitarian Universalism explores the many sources of the living tradition of this ‘chosen faith’.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Universalism of the Lord's Prayer: Words to All Christian Churches, and to All Mankind The title of this book is new; the Prayer of which it speaks is not. It comes to us from the great Teacher of the ages and of the race. The Christian churches of the past have accepted it, and the churches of the present of all sects claim it as the Model Prayer. Like other utterances of Christ, it cannot be too care fully considered or too profoundly studied. In the present instance, the call is made on all readers inter ested in Christianity to consider this great subject, that of run: universalism or the prayer. The reader is asked to regard not so much the fact that the title of the book is new, as that other question of vastly more importance, Is the statement of the title. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketch of the First Universalist Church and Society in New Haven, Conn Universalism in New Haven, has been a plant of slow growth. Its advocates have been counted among the off-scouring of the earth, because they believed in the impartial love of God. They were of the sect every where spoken against, and amid scorn and reproach, social ostracism and almost martyrdom of soul, they clung to the truth as it is in Jesus, and boldly defend ed the faith once delivered to the saints. Their word was not accepted in a court of justice, and such was the unwarrantable prejudice of those who called themselves Orthodox, less than half a century ago, that a man would be chided by his fellow church-members, if he presumed to trade with a Universalist, and was liable to censure if he dared to hire the room beneath the Univer salist Church, owned by Universalists, for business pur poses. To be a Universalist, was to be counted an infidel. The name was synonymous with atheist. Few dared to attend a religious gathering of this people, and among that few, women were afraid and ashamed to be seen. She who dared brave public opinion so far as to attend, was counted strong-minded, and her religion, if not her morals, questioned. Great has been the change. As in all other churches, women now form the larger portion of every congrega tion. Men are no longer despised, and their places of business shunned, because they profess Universalism. Their word is as good as any man's bond we believe, and whereas, at one time in the goodly city of New Haven, no hall could be obtained in which to hold pub lic services, and the meeting was held on the Green.
