Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the seven billion people who live on the earth look to either science or religion as the ultimate source of authority in their lives. But why must there be a conflict between the two? Why can’t science and religion support each other? The Unity of Truth shows why and how it makes perfect sense for science and religion to be mutually supportive. Beginning with the accepted truths of modern science and the beliefs of traditional Christianity, authors Allen A. Sweet, C. Frances Sweet, and Fritz Jaensch use their diverse expertise to deliver a deeper level of understanding of the ways in which science and religion can coexist. Relying on a thorough knowledge of physics, theology, and mathematics, this study addresses the paradox of how God communicates with our material world without violating any of the laws of science. Individual chapters discuss some of the most popular quandaries associated with combining science and religion. In addition, it considers the beginning and end of our universe, the evolution of life, and the meaning of human emotions from the scientific and theological perspectives, thus pushing understanding to a higher plateau of wisdom. Rational and devoid of rhetoric, The Unity of Truth seeks to help resolve the ongoing battle between religion and science, delivering a thoughtful narrative designed to open minds and hearts.

Book excerpt: Edited by Hywel Rees Jones It was just a handful of people; but because of the life that was in it, and the power of the Spirit upon it, the early church was mighty. It shook the world. Today the picture is one of chaos and confusion, within the church as well as outside it. The church has become uncertain of her own message. The Christian faith is being queried, denied and ridiculed almost as never before. The Lord Jesus Christ is reduced to Jesus - a mere man. He has been robbed of his eternal sonship, his unique deity and all his miracles, his atoning work and his literal physical resurrection. Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones calls on evangelicals to unite in a clear and uncompromising stand for the truth once delivered to the saints, in a fearless proclamation of the biblical gospel, which is the only answer to man's desperate need, and in prayer for a fresh outpouring of the power of the Holy Spirit in revival. Dr D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899-1981), one of the most remarkable preachers of this century, exercised a wide and influential ministry, which began in his native Wales and continues today through the many books that have been published. He is especially known as the minister of Westminster Chapel in London, a position he occupied for nearly thirty years. These addresses, originally given under the auspices of the British Evangelical Council (BEC), are still as relevant today as when they were first preached.

Adler explores where the truth lies in religion and the effects of diversity among religions. Truth in Religion is the product of Dr. Mortimer J. Adler’s search for a resolution to the age-old conflict between logic and faith. Aiming to discover where the truth lies among the plurality of the world’s organized religion, Dr. Adler explores the philosophy of religion and its true meanings among civilization as dictated by the principle of the unity of truth.

Book excerpt: The first volume in a series entitled "The Collected Works of Jack Cottrell" - this book is a collection of essays derived from his 48+ years of teaching. As Dr. Cottrell explains: "I am calling this first volume The Unity of Truth. A main theme of my whole career has been TRUTH; thus it seems appropriate to begin with this subject. The lead essay has the same title as the book, namely, "The Unity of Truth." This is a brand new study, never before published. In length, it is sort of in between an essay and a book, so I will call it a "theologella" for three reasons. First, it is about theology. Second, short novels are called novellas; the length of this piece fits that pattern. Third, I like to make up new words. The next three studies herein are of different lengths. Two have been published before, both in The Restoration Herald. One is called "In Matters of Faith, Unity; in Matters of Opinion, Liberty." This goes back to the February/March 2009 issues of the Herald. The other is a slightly longer version of a piece called "Christian Truth for a World in Decay," which appeared twice in the Herald: in the December 2016 issue, and in the June/July 2017 issues. The next piece here is entitled "'Hold On!' The Tyranny of Change." This is a sermon first preached at the Greendale (IN) First Church of Christ (where I worship and work), then for a chapel service at the (then) Florida Christian College. This is its first time in print. The next item is "The Peter Pan Syndrome: Churches and Christians That Won't Grow Up." This is one of my favorite compositions. I have presented it numerous times, beginning at a meeting in Louisville, KY, in 2014. It is based solely on Paul's teaching in Ephesians 4:11-16. Next is my most recent composition (as of May 14, 2018). I was asked to speak on this subject for the April 2018 meeting of the Fi-County Ministerial Association in Mowrystown, OH, namely, "Is the Restoration Movement Still Relevant?" My answer is yes, but only if we decide to put faithfulness to God's truth ahead of our quest for the unity of Christendom. This applies especially to the truth about baptism. The final entry here is a paper I presented in Indianapolis, IN, in the fall of 1989, at a conference on the nature of Biblical authority sponsored by the Christian Theological Seminary (Disciples of Christ). Three main speakers were invited to present papers on the conservative, moderate, and liberal perspectives on this subject. I was asked to present a paper from the conservative viewpoint. I am in the process of planning the next volume, which will probably be called God's Word Is Truth. It will be a selection of pieces on Biblical themes. Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy this one." (Adapted from the Preface)

Book excerpt: This book, first published more than 70 years ago, is the key to the metaphysical teachings of Charles Fillmore, the co-founder of Unity. In it you will find fascinating quotations and comments on metaphysical subjects including the reality of God, the nature of humankind, and the purpose of Mind. You will find that Mind does two crucial things: it creates and emits Divine Ideas. You will see that true, perfect nature is what metaphysical thinkers know as an idea. The Divine Idea for human beings is given a special term, the Christ. Divine Ideas form the "pattern" from which things in the material world are expressed. These are fascinating metaphysical ideas from the heart and pen of America's preeminent metaphysician-Ideas from God-Mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Churches all over the world work to spread the gospel of Christ, but this work is done in many different ways by many different denominations. Jesus and Paul were quite clear that the church of God was to be in total unityespecially with regard to the teachings of the gospel. So how do we bring the many denominations into a unity that will enhance a genuine team effort to present the true gospel to the world? In Unity in the Faith, author Bradford Mark Rosenquist shows why church unity across all denominations is an absolutely necessary work that must be accomplished for gospel success. First outlining what church unity is and what has been a historical obstacle to this unity, Rosenquist goes on to show how integral unity is to the gospel message of Christ. In the end, Unity in the Faith provides both an analysis of unity as well as a roadmap that Christians and church leaders can use to promote true unity in their congregations. It takes a cooperative effort to reach the world with the truth about Jesus and the kingdom of God. The universal body of Christ must therefore overcome the current disunity so that as one we can live up to Christs admonition to go into all the world and preach the gospel.

Book excerpt: What beliefs are core to the Christian faith? This book is here to help you understand the reason for your hope as a Christian so that you can see it with fresh sight and invite others into the conversation. A lot of Christians take their story—the narratives that give rise to their beliefs—for granted. They pray, go to church, perhaps even read their Bible. But they might be stuck if a stranger asked them to explain what they believe and why they believe it. Author, pastor, and theologian Mike Horton unpacks the essential and basic beliefs that all Christians share in a way that is easy to understand and applicable to our lives today. And in a way that will make you excited to be a Christian! Core Christianity covers topics like: Jesus as both fully God and fully man. The doctrine of the Trinity. The goodness of God despite a broken world. The ways God speaks. The meaning of salvation. What is the Christian calling? Includes discussion questions for individual or group use. This introduction to the basic doctrines of Christianity is perfect for those who are new to the faith, as well as those who have an interest in deepening their understanding of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ.

Book excerpt: John Stott’s masterly distillation of sixty years’ reflection on Christian discipleship ranges over the history of the church and its formative teachings, as well as the world-wide church today. He expounds the trinitarian character of the evangelical faith: the gracious initiative of God the Father in revealing himself to us, of Jesus Christ in redeeming us through the cross, and of the indwelling Holy Spirit in transforming us. This is why the three-fold emphasis of evangelical faith is upon the Word of God, the once-for-all nature of the work of Christ and the active, continuing work of the Spirit. This edition of Evangelical Truth contains The Cape Town Commitment, a document produced by The Lausanne Movement faithfully reflecting the proceedings of The Third Lausanne Congress on World Evangelization.

To quote Stephen Read: A paradox arises when an unacceptable conclusion is supported by a plausible argument from apparently acceptable premises. [...] So three di?erent reactions to the paradoxes are possible: to show that the r- soning is fallacious; or that the premises are not true after all; or that 2 the conclusion can in fact be accepted. There are sometimes elaborate ways to endorse a paradoxical conc- sion. One might be prepared to concede that indeed there are a number of grains that make a heap, but no possibility to know this number. However, some paradoxes are more threatening than others; showing the conclusiontobeacceptableisnotaseriousoption, iftheacceptanceleads to triviality. Among semantic paradoxes, the Liar (in any of its versions) 3 o?ers as its conclusion a bullet no one would be willing to bite. One of the most famous versions of the Liar Paradox was proposed by Epimenides, though its attribution to the Cretan poet and philosopher has only a relatively recent history. It seems indeed that Epimenides was mentioned neither in ancient nor in medieval treatments of the Liar 1 Jewish Publication Society translation. 2 Read [1].

It is, of course, not the whole story of my youth, for didn't my grandmother Mma-Tseitsi, mother of my father, tell me many times, A tongue can talk until numb with fatigue, but it can never tell the whole story'? And didn't she gently admonish me saying, Child of my child, a good story teller knows when to stop, just as a dreamer knows when to wake up.' In any event, a look at self can never be a full stare; it has to be a series of glimpses."
