A war made it necessary for him to return to Basel not by the direct route, but to take the roundabout way through Geneva. The adjuration held him fast, and determined his subsequent history. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Union Theological Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 1: Three Addresses in Commemoration of the Four Hundredth Anniversary of the Reformation Four hundred years ago today Martin Luther began public agitation for the reform Of the Latin Church. On the eve of All Saints' Day, 1517, he tacked up on a church door in Witten berg a long set Of propositions on which he challenged all comers to debate. N 0 one took up the challenge, so the debate never cam. It might have remained one of those fizzles of which academic history is full, had not pirating publishers seized On Luther's utterances and scattered them broadcast in different parts of Germany to the dismay Of the prudent. They provoked a tich attracted great attention. Men usually like to watch a fight and many Of Luther's fellow countrymen were particularly pleased to see the thick-set little professor of Witten berg start single-handed to attack the Italian exploiters of the German Church; for most Germans, and particularly the leading merchants and bankers, had beheld with disapproval many a mule team heavily laden with silver going across the Alps to fill the bottomless coffers Of the Pope. The constant export Of coin to Italy was a handicap to trade which the'new Saxon silver mines, productive as they were, could not wholly counterbalance. This export was connected with transactions of a peculiar nature, suspected by keen-witted con temporaries, but fully exposed only in recent years.1 The proceeds Of the sale Of the indulgences which called forth Luther's criticism were supposed2 to go entirely for the construction of what is still the largest and the most expensive church in the world, St. Peter's in Rome; but actually, by a secret agreement,3 half of the net proceeds were to be paid to a Hohenzollern prince, Albrecht, Archbishop Of brandenburg-mainz. Prior to this deduction, the South German banking house whose agents marketed the issue Charged great sums for expenses. Here in America we have just triumphantly completed the Second Liberty Loan, handsomely oversubscribed. Last Satur day night Our banks and trust companies, working overtime. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Agreement Between Union Seminary and the General Assembly: A Chapter Supplementary to Fifty Years of the Union, Theological Seminary in the City of New York The temper of mind, as also the way, in which the Joint Committee and the friends of reunion generally had come to regard the question of the theological seminaries, may be seen most distinctly, perhaps, in the speech of Rev. George W. Musgrave, D.D., LL.D., made on the occasion of the pres entation of the report of the J oint Committee of Confer ence to the Old School General Assembly sitting in the Brick Church in the city of New York, May 27, 1869. No one who heard it is likely ever to forget that speech or the remarkable old man who made it. A few extracts will in dicate its Spirit and its bearing on the question now under discussion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Constitution and Laws of the Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York, Founded on the 18th of January, 1836: As Revised and Amended, A. D. 1875 That the design of the Founders of this Seminary may be publicly known, and be sacredly regarded by the Directors, Professors and Students, it is judged proper to make the following preliminary statement: A number of Christians, both clergymen and laymen in the cities of New York and Brooklyn, deeply impressed with the claims of the world upon the Church of Christ to furnish a competent supply of well-educated and pious ministers of the Gospel; impressed also with the inadequacy of all existing means for this purpose; and believing that large cities furnish many peculiar facilities and advantages for conducting theological education; having, after several meetings for consultation and prayer, again convened on the 18th of January, A.D.1836, unanimously adopted the following resolution and declarations: 1. Resolved, in humble dependence on the grace of God, to attempt the establishment of a Theological Seminary in the City of New York. 2. In this Institution it is the design of the Founders to furnish the means of a full and thorough education, in a the subjects taught in the best Theological Seminaries in this or other countries. 3. Being fully persuaded that vital godliness, a thorough education, and practical training in the works of benevolence and pastoral labor, are all essential to meet the wants and promote the best interests of the kingdom of Christ, the Founders of this Seminary design that its students, remaining under pastoral influence, and performing the duties of church members in the several churches to which they belong, or with which they worship, in prayer-meetings, in the instruction of Sabbath-schools and Bible-classes, and being conversant with all the benevolent efforts of the present day in this great community, shall have the opportunity of adding to solid learning and true piety the teachings of experience. 4. By the foregoing advantages, the Founders hope and expect, with the blessing of God, to call forth and enlist, in the service of Christ and in the work of the ministry, genius, talent, enlightened piety and missionary zeal; and to qualify many for the labors and management of the various religious institutions, seminaries of learning, and enterprises of benevolence, which characterize the present times. 5. In short, it is the design of the Founders to provide a Theological Seminary in the midst of the greatest and most growing community in the United States, which may commend itself to all men of moderate views and feelings, who desire to live free from party strife, and to stand aloof from all extremes of doctrine or of practice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Considerations on the Choice of a Field for Ministerial Labor: Annual Address Before the Society of Alumni of Union Theological Seminary, Virginia, May, 1855 These views, it must he confessed, are drawn rather from the great fountain of Gospel truth, than from the prevalent practice and the temper of the times. Somehow, it has come to be regarded as more honora ble to boast in another man's line of things made ready to our hand, than it once was. SO that even a young man will often feel slighted, if compelled to go where some one has not already done the hardest of the work, and prepared a place for him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Union Seminary Magazine, Vol. 16: 1904-1905 This revision material, from a purely formal point of view, parts into three classes: some of it makes alterations in the text of the Confession; some of it makes additions to the text of the Confession; some of it makes explanations of the text of the Confession. This purely formal division of it, naturally, carries us but a very little way into our problem, which is to determine the material cfiect of its insertion into the Confession. It will supply, nevertheless, a clear and useful order of treat ment for the several portions of the material. Accordingly we shall take up these three portions in the order of their formal importance - first the material which merely explains the text; next that which adds to the text; and finally that which alters the text, substituting itself for greater or lesser portions of it. To the first of these classes belongs the Declaratory State ment; to the second, the two new chapters, entitled Of the Holy Spirit and Of the Love of God, and Missions, together with which we may class, perhaps (materially if not formally), the final clause of the Declaratory Statement; to the last. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Annals of Union Theological Seminary in the City of New-York "These forty years the Lord thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing." To recall the past, and mark the hand of God in our varied experience, is both pleasant and profitable. The gracious dealings of the Father Almighty with us and ours, as seen in the review of life, should stimulate us to renewed zeal and effort, in our endeavors to promote and extend the kingdom of the Divine Redeemer. He, who, through all their weary pilgrimage of forty years in the Arabian desert, had fed and clothed, guarded and guided his people Israel, would surely be their shield and buckler in the dreaded conflict with the Amorite, and, in due season, put them in secure possession of Canaan, the land of promise. So reasoned Moses, on the borders of Edom. We celebrate to-day the Fortieth Anniversary of Union Theological Seminary in the city of New-York. Forty years of instruction in the science of God and the Gospel of Christ are now brought to a close. It is a fitting occasion for at least a brief review of the history of this favored institution. As in the case of Israel on their way to the promised land, that history has been marked by signal and repeated interpositions of Divine Providence, and is singularly illustrative of the special guardianship of the great Head of the Church. Having, by the good hand of God upon us, attained to a position of influence among the agencies for raising up and sending forth a godly and able ministry, second to none in the land, it will be both entertaining and instructive, to recall the way in which the Lord has led us hitherto, that so we may thank God as we ought, and take courage in the continued prosecution of the work that is given us to do.
