Book excerpt: From beloved indie musician Andrew McMahon comes a searingly honest and beautifully written memoir about the challenges and triumphs of his life and career, as seen through the lens of his personal connection to three pianos. Andrew McMahon grew up in sunny Southern California as a child prodigy, learning to play piano and write songs at a very early age, stunning schoolmates and teachers alike with his gift for performing and his unique ability to emotionally connect with audiences. McMahon would go on to become the lead singer and songwriter for Something Corporate and Jack's Mannequin, and to release his debut solo album, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, in 2014. But behind this seemingly optimistic and quintessentially American story of big dreams come true lies a backdrop of overwhelming challenges that McMahon has faced—from a childhood defined by his father's struggle with addiction to his very public battle with leukemia in 2005 at the age of twenty-three, as chronicled in the intensely personal documentary Dear Jack. Overcoming those odds, McMahon has found solace and hope in the things that matter most, including family, the healing power of music and the one instrument he's always turned to: his piano. Three Pianos takes readers on a beautifully rendered and bitter-sweet American journey, one filled with inspiration, heartbreak, and an unwavering commitment to shedding our past in order to create a better future.

Book excerpt: Union Township has changed dramatically since the 1950s. The town was still very rural in those days. O'Mara's Farm sold fresh fruit to local kids on their daily trek home from school; Headley's Cider Mill sold homemade cider that tasted like real apples and sausages that tasted like nothing that has ever been tasted before or since. Neighbors knew each other's name and waved hello from seats on their front steps. But O'Mara's and Headley's are gone today, as are Woolworths, Whitney's, and Nawrocki's Pharmacy. New neighbors have replaced the old. Even Union High School, once a local landmark on Caldwell Avenue, has a new home on North Third Street. Union Revisited illustrates these changes and shares Union's past, and while one can never live there again, it might be a really nice place to visit.

Book excerpt: Not many towns can boast all that Union has to offer. The birthplace of the computer, the home of philanthropists and entrepreneurs with great foresight, and even a golf classic named for a well-loved cartoon character are just a few of the features that make Union special. In Union, their stories and countless other tales from Union and the villages of Endicott and Johnson City are retold by an exceptional collection of photographs and glass negatives. The story of Union began with the Boston Purchase, the sale of 2,300,000 acres to General Oringle Stoddard. Soon the Town of Union was incorporated, settlers and businesses began to take root, and by 1900, the population had grown and industry was on the rise. George F. Johnson headed Union's Endicott-Johnson Shoe Company. "EJ" was so innovative and generous in the treatment of its 20,000 employees that Johnson became the most beloved man in the town. It was also in Union that Thomas J. Watson Sr. built IBM into the largest corporation in the world. It was here that IBM designed and built the first computers and employed the first technicians to service them. This illustrated volume explores the lives of the wealthy and powerful as well as the daily lives of local townspeople.

Book excerpt: Since the development of photography in the mid-nineteenth century, the camera has been used as a tool of both discovery and preservation. Photographs bring alive our image of the past and can open a floodgate of memories and nostalgia or inspire curiosity and a sense of history. Union began in the early 1700s as a small farming community called Connecticut Farms. After is was burned to the ground by British and Hessian troops during the Revolutionary War, residents rebuilt their homes and renamed their town Union. Life remained essentially unchanged in the small rural town into the 1930s when main roads were still unpaved and cows disrupted traffic on Morris Avenue. Following World War II, however, Union began to expand and grow into the thriving community that it is today. The selection of photographs in this delightful visual history chronicles the many changes that Union has undergone from the 1870s to the 1980s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of EU enlargement has raised many thorny issues unanticipated by the framers of the EC Treaty. A significant upshot of these issues is that the concept of European identity - defined in terms of such factors as culture, history and economics - has supplanted the long-dominant theme of 'widening and deepening, ' particularly since the Union's expansion has become primarily eastward. The major contribution of this important book lies in its analysis of the conceptualization and perception of enlargement from various points of view, focusing on the concerns of stakeholders and the 'identity' conflicts and uncertainties incurred by enlargement initiatives. In the course of its presentation, it details the actual pre-accession Europeanization process and its complex history. Among the key elements discussed are the following: the conflict between 'widening' and 'deepening' and the effect on EU institutional reform; institutional requirements on candidate countries; pre-accession criteria and negotiations; administrative capacity, judicial capacity, and legal approximation in accession states; capacity of the EU to absorb new Member States; and EC law as part of European identity. Also covered are specific historical details of particular pre-accession negotiations (e.g., Greece, Spain, Portugal, Malta, and Cyprus), the still inconclusive negotiations with Turkey and the Western Balkan states, and political factors involved in the non-accession of Norway, Iceland and Switzerland. Assembling powerful evidence and applying incisive analysis, the author's conclusion shows that, absent further (and major) EU institutional reform, it will be difficult for an enlarging Union to continue to 'deliver the goods.' A watershed in the continuing great debate on the fulfilment of the EC Treaty's determination to foster and promote 'an ever closer union of the peoples of Europe, ' this book will prove invaluable to anybody interested in the European integration project, particularly lawyers, academics, officials and policymakers in the EU Member States.
