Book excerpt: Chaotic behavior of (even the simplest) iterations of polynomial maps of the complex plane was known for almost one hundred years due to the pioneering work of Farou, Julia, and their contemporaries. However, it was only twenty-five years ago that the first computer generated images illustrating properties of iterations of quadratic maps appeared. These images of the so-called Mandelbrot and Julia sets immediately resulted in a strong resurgence of interest in complex dynamics. The present volume, based on the talks at the conference commemorating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the appearance of Mandelbrot sets, provides a panorama of current research in this truly fascinating area of mathematics.

This term was coined by the great French mathematician Alexandre Grothendieck in order to denominate a method of pictorial representation of some highly interesting classes of polynomials and rational functions. The polynomials studied in this book take their origin in number theory. The authors show how, by drawing simple pictures, one can prove some long-standing conjectures and formulate new ones. The theory presented here touches upon many different fields of mathematics. The major part of the book is quite elementary and is easily accessible to an undergraduate student. The less elementary parts, such as Galois theory or group representations and their characters, would need a more profound knowledge of mathematics. The reader may either take the basic facts of these theories for granted or use our book as a motivation and a first approach to these subjects.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to Dennis Sullivan on the occasion of his 60th birthday. The framework of affine and hyperbolic laminations provides a unifying foundation for many aspects of conformal dynamics and hyperbolic geometry. The central objects of this approach are an affine Riemann surface lamination $\mathcal A$ and the associated hyperbolic 3-lamination $\mathcal H$ endowed with an action of a discrete group of isomorphisms. This action is properly discontinuous on $\mathcal H$, which allows one to pass to the quotient hyperbolic lamination $\mathcal M$. Our work explores natural ``geometric'' measures on these laminations. We begin with a brief self-contained introduction to the measure theory on laminations by discussing the relationship between leafwise, transverse and global measures. The central themes of our study are: leafwise and transverse ``conformal streams'' on an affine lamination $\mathcal A$ (analogues of the Patterson-Sullivan conformal measures for Kleinian groups), harmonic and invariant measures on the corresponding hyperbolic lamination $\mathcal H$, the ``Anosov--Sinai cocycle'', the corresponding ``basic cohomology class'' on $\mathcal A$ (which provides an obstruction to flatness), and the Busemann cocycle on $\mathcal H$. A number of related geometric objects on laminations -- in particular, the backward and forward Poincare series and the associated critical exponents, the curvature forms and the Euler class, currents and transverse invariant measures, $\lambda$-harmonic functions and the leafwise Brownian motion -- are discussed along the lines. The main examples are provided by the laminations arising from the Kleinian and the rational dynamics. In the former case, $\mathcal M$ is a sublamination of the unit tangent bundle of a hyperbolic 3-manifold, its transversals can be identified with the limit set of the Kleinian group, and we show how the classical theory of Patterson-Sullivan measures can be recast in terms of our general approach. In the latter case, the laminations were recently constructed by Lyubich and Minsky in [LM97]. Assuming that they are locally compact, we construct a transverse $\delta$-conformal stream on $\mathcal A$ and the corresponding $\lambda$-harmonic measure on $\mathcal M$, where $\lambda=\delta(\delta-2)$. We prove that the exponent $\delta$ of the stream does not exceed 2 and that the affine laminations are never flat except for several explicit special cases (rational functions with parabolic Thurston orbifold).

Book excerpt: The maps from loop suspensions to loop spaces are investigated using group representations in this article. The shuffle relations on the Cohen groups are given. By using these relations, a universal ring for functorial self maps of double loop spaces of double suspensions is given. Moreover the obstructions to the classical exponent problem in homotopy theory are displayed in the extension groups of the dual of the important symmetric group modules Lie$(n)$, as well as in the top cohomology of the Artin braid groups with coefficients in the top homology of the Artin pure braid groups.

Book excerpt: We prove here the Martino-Priddy conjecture at the prime $2$: the $2$-completions of the classifying spaces of two finite groups $G$ and $G'$ are homotopy equivalent if and only if there is an isomorphism between their Sylow $2$-subgroups which preserves fusion. This is a consequence of a technical algebraic result, which says that for a finite group $G$, the second higher derived functor of the inverse limit vanishes for a certain functor $\mathcal{Z}_G$ on the $2$-subgroup orbit category of $G$. The proof of this result uses the classification theorem for finite simple groups.

Book excerpt: In order to inject dissipation as to force local exponential stabilization of the steady-state solutions, an Optimal Control Problem (OCP) with a quadratic cost functional over an infinite time-horizon is introduced for the linearized N-S equations. As a result, the same Riccati-based, optimal boundary feedback controller which is obtained in the linearized OCP is then selected and implemented also on the full N-S system. For $d=3$, the OCP falls definitely outside the boundaries of established optimal control theory for parabolic systems with boundary controls, in that the combined index of unboundedness--between the unboundedness of the boundary control operator and the unboundedness of the penalization or observation operator--is strictly larger than $\tfrac{3}{2}$, as expressed in terms of fractional powers of the free-dynamics operator. In contrast, established (and rich) optimal control theory [L-T.2] of boundary control parabolic problems and corresponding algebraic Riccati theory requires a combined index of unboundedness strictly less than 1. An additional preliminary serious difficulty to overcome lies at the outset of the program, in establishing that the present highly non-standard OCP--with the aforementioned high level of unboundedness in control and observation operators and subject, moreover, to the additional constraint that the controllers be pointwise tangential--be non-empty; that is, it satisfies the so-called Finite Cost Condition [L-T.2].

Book excerpt: This paper studies two types of integral transformation associated with fractional Brownian motion. They are applied to construct approximation schemes for fractional Brownian motion by polygonal approximation of standard Brownian motion. This approximation is the best in the sense that it minimizes the mean square error. The rate of convergence for this approximation is obtained. The integral transformations are combined with the idea of probability structure preserving mapping introduced in [48] and are applied to develop a stochastic calculus for fractional Brownian motions of all Hurst parameter $H\in (0, 1)$. In particular we obtain Radon-Nikodym derivative of nonlinear (random) translation of fractional Brownian motion over finite interval, extending the results of [48] to general case. We obtain an integration by parts formula for general stochastic integral and an Ito type formula for some stochastic integral. The conditioning, Clark derivative, continuity of stochastic integral are also studied. As an application we study a linear quadratic control problem, where the system is driven by fractional Brownian motion.

In the characteristic $p$ theory we describe the kernel and image of the $q$-expansion map and prove the existence of filtration for Hilbert modular forms; we define operators $U$, $V$ and $\Theta_\chi$ and study the variation of the filtration under these operators. Our methods are geometric - comparing holomorphic Hilbert modular forms with rational functions on a moduli scheme with level-$p$ structure, whose poles are supported on the non-ordinary locus. In the $p$-adic theory we study congruences between Hilbert modular forms. This applies to the study of congruences between special values of zeta functions of totally real fields. It also allows us to define $p$-adic Hilbert modular forms 'a la Serre' as $p$-adic uniform limit of classical modular forms, and compare them with $p$-adic modular forms 'a la Katz' that are regular functions on a certain formal moduli scheme. We show that the two notions agree for cusp forms and for a suitable class of weights containing all the classical ones. We extend the operators $V$ and $\Theta_\chi$ to the $p$-adic setting.

Book excerpt: The G-spectrum or generative complexity of a class $\mathcal{C}$ of algebraic structures is the function $\mathrm{G}_\mathcal{C}(k)$ that counts the number of non-isomorphic models in $\mathcal{C}$ that are generated by at most $k$ elements. We consider the behavior of $\mathrm{G}_\mathcal{C}(k)$ when $\mathcal{C}$ is a locally finite equational class (variety) of algebras and $k$ is finite. We are interested in ways that algebraic properties of $\mathcal{C}$ lead to upper or lower bounds on generative complexity. Some of our results give sharp upper and lower bounds so as to place a particular variety or class of varieties at a precise level in an exponential hierarchy. We say $\mathcal{C}$ has many models if there exists $c>0$ such that $\mathrm{G}_\mathcal{C}(k) \ge 2^{2^{ck}}$ for all but finitely many $k$, $\mathcal{C}$ has few models if there is a polynomial $p(k)$ with $\mathrm{G}_\mathcal{C}(k) \le 2^{p(k)}$, and $\mathcal{C}$ has very few models if $\mathrm{G}_\mathcal{C}(k)$ is bounded above by a polynomial in $k$.Much of our work is motivated by a desire to know which locally finite varieties have few or very few models, and to discover conditions that force a variety to have many models. We present characterization theorems for a very broad class of varieties including most known and well-studied types of algebras, such as groups, rings, modules, lattices. Two main results of our work are: a full characterization of locally finite varieties omitting the tame congruence theory type 1 with very few models as the affine varieties over a ring of finite representation type, and a full characterization of finitely generated varieties omitting type 1 with few models. In particular, we show that a finitely generated variety of groups has few models if and only if it is nilpotent and has very few models if and only if it is Abelian.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very recently, the classification of Moufang polygons has been completed by Tits and Weiss. Moufang $n$-gons exist for $n \in \{3, 4, 6, 8 \}$ only. For $n \in \{3, 6, 8 \}$, the proof is nicely divided into two parts: first, it is shown that a Moufang $n$-gon can be parametrized by a certain interesting algebraic structure, and secondly, these algebraic structures are classified. The classification of Moufang quadrangles $(n=4)$ is not organized in this way due to the absence of a suitable algebraic structure. The goal of this article is to present such a uniform algebraic structure for Moufang quadrangles, and to classify these structures without referring back to the original Moufang quadrangles from which they arise, thereby also providing a new proof for the classification of Moufang quadrangles, which does consist of the division into these two parts. We hope that these algebraic structures will prove to be interesting in their own right.
