This book was released on 2005 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to Dennis Sullivan on the occasion of his 60th birthday. The framework of affine and hyperbolic laminations provides a unifying foundation for many aspects of conformal dynamics and hyperbolic geometry. The central objects of this approach are an affine Riemann surface lamination $\mathcal A$ and the associated hyperbolic 3-lamination $\mathcal H$ endowed with an action of a discrete group of isomorphisms. This action is properly discontinuous on $\mathcal H$, which allows one to pass to the quotient hyperbolic lamination $\mathcal M$. Our work explores natural ``geometric'' measures on these laminations. We begin with a brief self-contained introduction to the measure theory on laminations by discussing the relationship between leafwise, transverse and global measures. The central themes of our study are: leafwise and transverse ``conformal streams'' on an affine lamination $\mathcal A$ (analogues of the Patterson-Sullivan conformal measures for Kleinian groups), harmonic and invariant measures on the corresponding hyperbolic lamination $\mathcal H$, the ``Anosov--Sinai cocycle'', the corresponding ``basic cohomology class'' on $\mathcal A$ (which provides an obstruction to flatness), and the Busemann cocycle on $\mathcal H$. A number of related geometric objects on laminations -- in particular, the backward and forward Poincare series and the associated critical exponents, the curvature forms and the Euler class, currents and transverse invariant measures, $\lambda$-harmonic functions and the leafwise Brownian motion -- are discussed along the lines. The main examples are provided by the laminations arising from the Kleinian and the rational dynamics. In the former case, $\mathcal M$ is a sublamination of the unit tangent bundle of a hyperbolic 3-manifold, its transversals can be identified with the limit set of the Kleinian group, and we show how the classical theory of Patterson-Sullivan measures can be recast in terms of our general approach. In the latter case, the laminations were recently constructed by Lyubich and Minsky in [LM97]. Assuming that they are locally compact, we construct a transverse $\delta$-conformal stream on $\mathcal A$ and the corresponding $\lambda$-harmonic measure on $\mathcal M$, where $\lambda=\delta(\delta-2)$. We prove that the exponent $\delta$ of the stream does not exceed 2 and that the affine laminations are never flat except for several explicit special cases (rational functions with parabolic Thurston orbifold).

Book excerpt: This volume collects a set of contributions by participants of the Workshop Partially hyperbolic dynamics, laminations, and Teichmuller flow held at the Fields Institute in Toronto in January 2006. The Workshop brought together several leading experts in two very active fields of contemporary dynamical systems theory: partially hyperbolic dynamics and Teichmuller dynamics. They are unified by ideas coming from the theory of laminations and foliations, dynamical hyperbolicity, and ergodic theory. These are the main themes of the current volume. The volume contains both surveys and research papers on non-uniform and partial hyperbolicity, on dominated splitting and beyond (in Part I), Teichmuller dynamics with applications to interval exchange transformations and on the topology of moduli spaces of quadratic differentials (in Part II), foliations and laminations and other miscellaneous papers (in Part III). Taken together these papers provide a snapshot of the state of the art in some of the most active topics at the crossroads between dynamical systems, smooth ergodic theory, geometry and topology, suitable for advanced graduate students and researchers.Non-specialists will find the extensive, in-depth surveys especially useful.

The main aspects concern the topology of foliations of low-dimensional manifolds, the geometry of foliated Riemannian manifolds and the dynamical properties of foliations. Among the surveys are lecture notes devoted to the analysis of some operator algebras on foliated manifolds and the theory of confoliations (objects defined recently by W Thurston and Y Eliashberg, situated between foliations and contact structures). Among the research articles one can find a detailed proof of an unpublished theorem (due to Duminy) concerning ends of leaves in exceptional minimal sets. Book excerpt: The object of the present study is to characterize the traces of the Sobolev functions in a sub-Riemannian, or Carnot-Caratheodory space. Such traces are defined in terms of suitable Besov spaces with respect to a measure which is concentrated on a lower dimensional manifold, and which satisfies an Ahlfors type condition with respect to the standard Lebesgue measure. We also study the extension problem for the relevant Besov spaces. Various concrete applications to the setting of Carnot groups are analyzed in detail and an application to the solvability of the subelliptic Neumann problem is presented.

Book excerpt: We characterize Carleson measures for the analytic Besov spaces $B_{p}$ on the unit ball $\mathbb{B}_{n}$ in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ in terms of a discrete tree condition on the associated Bergman tree $\mathcal{T}_{n}$. We also characterize the pointwise multipliers on $B_{p}$ in terms of Carleson measures. We then apply these results to characterize the interpolating sequences in $\mathbb{B}_{n}$ for $B_{p}$ and their multiplier spaces $M_{B_{p}}$, generalizing a theorem of Boe in one dimension. The interpolating sequences for $B_{p}$ and for $M_{B_{p}}$ are precisely those sequences satisfying a separation condition and a Carleson embedding condition. These results hold for $1\less p \less \infty$ with the exceptions that for $2+\frac{1}{n-1}\leq p

Book excerpt: Given a compact metric space $(\Omega,d)$ equipped with a non-atomic, probability measure $m$ and a positive decreasing function $\psi$, we consider a natural class of lim sup subsets $\Lambda(\psi)$ of $\Omega$. The classical lim sup set $W(\psi)$ of `$\psi$-approximable' numbers in the theory of metric Diophantine approximation fall within this class. We establish sufficient conditions (which are also necessary under some natural assumptions) for the $m$-measure of $\Lambda(\psi)$ to be either positive or full in $\Omega$ and for the Hausdorff $f$-measure to be infinite. The classical theorems of Khintchine-Groshev and Jarnik concerning $W(\psi)$ fall into our general framework. The main results provide a unifying treatment of numerous problems in metric Diophantine approximation including those for real, complex and $p$-adic fields associated with both independent and dependent quantities. Applications also include those to Kleinian groups and rational maps. Compared to previous works our framework allows us to successfully remove many unnecessary conditions and strengthen fundamental results such as Jarnik's theorem and the Baker-Schmidt theorem. In particular, the strengthening of Jarnik's theorem opens up the Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture for Hausdorff measures.

By applying the notion of a twisted tensor product in the senses of Brown as well as of Hess, we construct an economical injective resolution to compute, as an algebra, the cotorsion product which is the $E_2$-term of the cobar type Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence converging to the cohomology of classifying space of the loop group $LG$. As an application, the cohomology $H^*(BLSpin(10); \mathbb{Z}/2)$ is explicitly determined as an $H^*(BSpin(10); \mathbb{Z}/2)$-module by using effectively the cobar type spectral sequence and the Hochschild spectral sequence, and further, by analyzing the TV-model for $BSpin(10)$.

Book excerpt: The maps from loop suspensions to loop spaces are investigated using group representations in this article. The shuffle relations on the Cohen groups are given. By using these relations, a universal ring for functorial self maps of double loop spaces of double suspensions is given. Moreover the obstructions to the classical exponent problem in homotopy theory are displayed in the extension groups of the dual of the important symmetric group modules Lie$(n)$, as well as in the top cohomology of the Artin braid groups with coefficients in the top homology of the Artin pure braid groups.

First he proves a local freeness of the prolongment of deformed holomorphic bundle by an increasing order. Then he obtains the polarized mixed twistor structure from the data on the divisors. As one of the applications, he obtains the norm estimate of holomorphic or flat sections by weight filtrations of the monodromies. As another application, the author establishes the correspondence of semisimple regularholonomic $D$-modules and polarizable pure imaginary pure twistor $D$-modules through tame pure imaginary harmonic bundles, which is a conjecture of C. Sabbah. Then the regular holonomic version of M. Kashiwara's conjecture follows from the results of Sabbah and the author.

Book excerpt: These proceedings represent the current state of research on the topics 'boundary theory' and 'spectral and probability theory' of random walks on infinite graphs. They are the result of the two workshops held in Styria (Graz and St. Kathrein am Offenegg, Austria) between June 29th and July 5th, 2009. Many of the participants joined both meetings. Even though the perspectives range from very different fields of mathematics, they all contribute with important results to the same wonderful topic from structure theory, which, by extending a quotation of Laurent Saloff-Coste, could be described by 'exploration of groups by random processes'.

Book excerpt: The aim of this paper is to introduce the reader to various forms of the maximum principle, starting from its classical formulation up to generalizations of the Omori-Yau maximum principle at infinity recently obtained by the authors. Applications are given to a number of geometrical problems in the setting of complete Riemannian manifolds, under assumptions either on the curvature or on the volume growth of geodesic balls.
