Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lived experience of murder - those who kill, those whose loved ones are killed, and those who investigate and who participate in the legal disposition of homicide - is the subject of this work. As part of a continuing series with the Foundation of Thanatology, this volume comprises twenty-eight essays which address such topics as the military, euthanasia, terrorism, gun control, and capital punishment. The Human Side of Homicide incorporates legal and public health perspectives on homicide and presents work drawn from a wide range of related professions. Material is organized in three sections. "The Human Side of Homicide" profiles those who kill; "The Killers and the Victims" discusses specific types of homicide; and "Law and Justice" examines germane legal issues. Few texts have encompassed analyses of such range and insight. This new volume will be of special interest to those already followin the research of the Foundation of Thanatology. However, The Human Side of Homicide will also prove to be an inexhaustible resource for doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and sociologist, as well as students and teachers of criminal law, and the police administration. -- from dust jacket.

Book excerpt: To derive statistics about crime â€" to estimate its levels and trends, assess its costs to and impacts on society, and inform law enforcement approaches to prevent it - a conceptual framework for defining and thinking about crime is virtually a prerequisite. Developing and maintaining such a framework is no easy task, because the mechanics of crime are ever evolving and shifting: tied to shifts and development in technology, society, and legislation. Interest in understanding crime surged in the 1920s, which proved to be a pivotal decade for the collection of nationwide crime statistics. Now established as a permanent agency, the Census Bureau commissioned the drafting of a manual for preparing crime statisticsâ€"intended for use by the police, corrections departments, and courts alike. The new manual sought to solve a perennial problem by suggesting a standard taxonomy of crime. Shortly after the Census Bureau issued its manual, the International Association of Chiefs of Police in convention adopted a resolution to create a Committee on Uniform Crime Records â€"to begin the process of describing what a national system of data on crimes known to the police might look like. Report 1 performed a comprehensive reassessment of what is meant by crime in U.S. crime statistics and recommends a new classification of crime to organize measurement efforts. This second report examines methodological and implementation issues and presents a conceptual blueprint for modernizing crime statistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the spring of 1943 more than a half million blacks were in the U.S. Army, but only 79,000 of them were overseas. Most were repeating the experience of their fathers in World War I—serving chiefly in labor battalions. Wherever black troops were trained or stationed, Brandt explains, "rage surfaced frequently, was suppressed, but not extinguished." Using eyewitness accounts, he describes the rage Harlem residents felt, the discrimination and humiliation they shared with blacks across the country. The collective anger erupted one day in Harlem when a young black soldier was shot by a white police officer. The riot, in which six blacks were killed, seven hundred injured, and six hundred arrested, became a turning point in America's race relations and a precursor to the civil rights struggle of the 1960s.
