Book Synopsis Dictionary of Criminal Justice Data Terminology by : Search Group
Download or read book Dictionary of Criminal Justice Data Terminology written by Search Group and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This technical reference work contains a large selection of proposed standard terms and definitions and model data structures, continuing the effort to develop a uniform national terminology for collecting and exchanging justice information and statistics. It incorporates material from and supersedes the first edition. It is primarily intended for the use of justice data collectors, processors, analysts, and interpreters, particularly those who are concerned with the communication of justice information between the States and at the national level. The recommended terminology is intended to promote the unambiguous description and communication of basic facts concerning criminal and juvenile justice processes, agencies, alleged and adjudicated offenders, and offenses. Model data structures describe standardizable units and events in selected subject areas and explicate category and term relationships. Each entry in the dictionary provides either recommended data system usages, or a description of actual usages in the justice community, or both. A discussion of the role of terminology in data system development and statistics and of problems in the development and adoption of an unambiguous and consistent technical vocabulary is included.

Book Synopsis American Crime Fiction by : Peter Swirski
Download or read book American Crime Fiction written by Peter Swirski and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Swirski looks at American crime fiction as an artform that expresses and reflects the social and aesthetic values of its authors and readers. As such he documents the manifold ways in which such authorship and readership are a matter of informed literary choice and not of cultural brainwashing or declining literary standards. Asking, in effect, a series of questions about the nature of genre fiction as art, successive chapters look at American crime writers whose careers throw light on the hazards and rewards of nobrow traffic between popular forms and highbrow aesthetics: Dashiell Hammett, John Grisham, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Raymond Chandler, Ed McBain, Nelson DeMille, and F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Download or read book Challenging Confinement written by Bonnie L. Ernst and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2023-10-31 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines how the feminist movements in the late twentieth century ignited prison protests, activism, and reform in women’s prisons While the late twentieth century brought about greater rights for women, it also saw a rapid increase in the number of female prisoners. Before their confinement, many incarcerated women had gained access to work and higher education. But once behind bars, they found the only programs available for them perpetuated misogynistic norms. Challenging Confinement is about how incarcerated women incorporated strategies from feminist movements into their activism behind bars. Facing long sentences, overcrowded prisons, and a lack of rehabilitation programs, incarcerated women protested, organized, and filed lawsuits to advocate for gender and racial equality in prison. Drawing on prison grievance reports, oral histories, state archives, and private collections, Bonnie L. Ernst tells the story of how women's movements, beginning in the 1920s and ending in the era of mass incarceration, infused prison activism in Michigan with new energy. Female prisoners and attorneys successfully persuaded the federal court to force state prisons to offer more programming and access to legal services. Mass incarceration swallowed up many of those efforts, but this history demonstrates how core principles of women’s movements encouraged incarcerated women to form coalitions and challenge their jailers. By bringing together histories of race, gender, and punishment, Challenging Confinement reveals how incarcerated women worked together to resist, in an era of mass imprisonment.
